Hello, what would you guys say be the required abilities (highest damage, survival, etc.) going into hell as a Demon Hunter? Thanks.
Going into hell the only ability I would really push on you to use is Smokescreen, as others have said. You could probably make it through hell without it, but you're going to need it for Inferno, and you're gimping yourself in hell without it...so you might as well learn to use it well right away.
Apart from that, there's a TON of viable options. I've seen people successfully use just about any generator, although my preference would be Hungering Arrow (I find Entangling Shot, once you get to hell, simply doesn't provide enough of a slow to be worth it, but that's just my preference, your results may vary). There's many different spenders you can successfully use, both single target and AoE: Impale, Multishot, Elemental Arrow, Cluster Arrow...all very effective when used correctly.
I would actually also recommend using Preparation as well; it's not necessary, but I think it's important to learn how to use it well, because you're probably going to be making use of it in Inferno.
To the OP: As everyone else has said, Smoke Screen (Lingering Fog) will make Hell a lot easier. Personally, I find Vault more fun, but objectively, I don't think it's even close in terms of usefulness. Another suggestion I might add is using Vengeance as a passive. The extra hatred can be really useful, but the bonus hatred/discipline from health orbs is outstanding.
Right, so the sad thing right now is that even when smokescreen has been nerfed to oblivion making it borderline to bad and nearly FORCING Demon Hunters to play in groups it's still better than the rest of the shitty skill set we have. Kind of says something about how "well made" our skills are, doesn't it?
How did they change Smoke Screen? I've been playing for a couple hours today, and I haven't noticed much difference?

From 2 sec no CD borderline to 1 sec, 3 sec CD.
There was our only viable defensive mechanic in inferno, HF :-)
Yea, I didn't realize it with some of the packs I was fighting early on today. It's absurd how that skill functions now. If a mob has "fast", we're pretty much toast. The worst is that they still track you for a few seconds even after you use the ability. Hopefully, they will fix it so that the cool down coincides with the end of the Smoke Screen, at least when using the Lingering Fog rune. I still love the DH, so I'll have to find a work around for it.
I'm doing fine in act 1 inferno with shadow power gloom but it does require that you have some vitality and resistance too.
My biggest vulnerability is getting caught in frozen or arcane enchanted aoe due to lack of mobility, so I'll probably try vault. Smoke screen would work for these cases but is more expensive considering what I would use it for.
It's a little funny when you have these 2 sides of the DH class. AKA, people who haven't passed Act 1 Inferno and are stuck on the butcher, and then there's the rest that is either act 2 / 3. Considering "viable skills" they completely change once you find out mobs are a lot faster than you no matter what, aka, caltrops and any other slowing effect are moot, damage is ridiculous, and by ridiculous I mean getting hit for 70k by a NORMAL tongue lasher ranged attack (which is instant by the way).
In reference to night stalker, honestly, I don't find the use in it unless you have a 1 hand crossbow with decen't amount of crit and even then, it's a CHANCE on crit. I'd rather just take the straight damage from sharpshooter considering it's always going to be roughly a +9% crit chance increase which is huge. The issue is, I can DPS mobs down wayyyy faster, any regular mob is not a problem for me in act 3 (other than multiple tongue lashers), even most champions I can burn down within 20-50 seconds. The problem is actually having the survivability tools to do it which just don't really exist anymore for the demon hunter other than smokescreen. The duration nerf was just ridiculous and should have been handled better in some other way, now it's on the verge of not even being useless in single player. So I am forced to group with my friends which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but they can't quite do Act 2 yet because of the ridiculous "gear requirement" needed so that you can actually pass act 2.
