That is the build i've been playing with mostly through the harder stuff. what's really nice about it is the ability to absorb damage for a long time by chaining smoke screen and using prep when low on discipline.
You have the aoe slow on there to kite adds and twin chakrams for the extra aoe dmg.
(I personally prefer twin chakrams over multishot simply because it costs less hatred)
This is the build I will be trying out once I reach the required lvl. I started out as a Monk but instead loving gameplay style of Demon Hunter. I enjoy vaulting in, putting down a trap, and vaulting out of mobs and lay waste to them. So far just soloing (although I am caught up with friends so will group up from here on out) but overall really enjoying my build and looking forward to Nightmare and beyond once I wrap up Normal this weekend.
Multishot for AOE, Impale for single target. Smoke screen for survival. Prep for more Smoke Screen. Bat companion for more hatred regen for faster multishot/impales.
Depending on the boss, there is a little variation, but I'll usually replace multishot with rapid fire (web shot rune), vengeance with thrill of the hunt, and caltrops with shadow power (blood moon rune).
As a side note, my favorite fights are planned miniboss fights where you get to plan when the fight starts, for example, when you take the crown of the skeleton king. I'll replace a couple skills with Caltrops (Torturous Ground) and Spike Traps (Bandolier), spam the maximum of each right where the enemy will spawn, and then usually they just keel over or have very little health. I definitely do not recommended for longer boss fights, due to the inefficiency of changing skills on the fly.
At 60 for hell - http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/demon-hunter#SWlYXV!eXf!cYcaZb
Bola Shot - is more disc = more smoke screens.
Spike Trap - Scatter - Kite enemies through choke points for 825% weapon dmg in a small aoe for 30 hatred = best burst a demon hunter has.
Rain of vengeance - Stampede or Flying Strike give you a bit of burst dmg + CC on a modest CD.
Smoke Screen = Essential on hell
preparation = more smoke screen AND it a chunk of health.. very potent.since self healing is probably a DHs weakest aspect.
Caltrops - hooked spines is the best rune for it imo since the other ones barely slow champs at all.
Archery/Steady aim should be obvious enough and help with spike trap damage. Numbing traps keeps you from getting 1 shot when stuff charges through your caltrops or w/e.
The builds not perfect, and not group friendly either ( I'd probably drop RoV for Marked for Death + 1% heal in a group), but it does very good damage and is about as survivable as anything else available and easy to use.
This is the build I'm using as I solo inferno. I'm using a 2h xbow and I'm stacking increased crit chance/damage wherever possible. Along with Sharpshooter, this is an EXTREMELY powerful build. I'm one shotting things and doing crazy amounts of damage.
I usually just plant 1-2 caltrops (depending on how many minions) and some spike traps (inside the caltrops area), and all minions are gone (the Cull the weak passive is genius for this) and maybe finish of some runners with some hungering arrows (can't get enough of the piercing rune, got 16 kills with one arrow one time.. just awesome).
Rapid Fire I actually just use if i want to smash allot of "objects", or i want to have some fun (can be good vs rares and champs).
If I get in a bad spot, just vault or shadow power if the situation is relay bad (btw haven't used one health pot yet, so it works quite well).
Vengeance just so i can get of four spike traps without having to generate more hatred.
Cull the weak is awesome with Caltrops (Hooked spines) and Rapid Fire (Web shot) combined with spike trap's awesome dam.
The boss build is just more single target dam, might change out Rapid Fire with Preparation if needed.
Going one hand crossbow and a shield, with 220 dext and 140 Vit just to keep me from dying
http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/demon-hunter#WRgdkl!ade!ZaYbaa is my general build - it lacks singletarget damage, but that is generally not an issue, as the Bola Shot stuns everything except for things like Belial's second form (stuns anything that can move basicly) - just started on hell, and it's invalueable to me on the "new" 3-affix packs, as it usually piles the mobs up together due to the stun (I kite them into narrow hallways or on bridges etc whenever possible to group them up), and the shots explode to dmg them all. When there's a single mob left, I can go fullout nuke with Rain of Vengeance, Shadowpower + Gloom (vampiric + 65% dmg reduc), and the stun will usually make sure that the mob barely attacks me. My escape mechanic is well-placed vaults, along with stun on impact, meaning I can literally dash through 70 mobs at once as they get knocked away from me + stunned.
When I face "trash", I just unleash a volley of elemental arrow - ball lightning's - it is an extremely potent aoe as the ball travels through packs and electrocutes the shit out of *everything* it meets. 10 of those in rapid succession after each other will obliterate any pack (like the aforementioned 70 mobs :P).
Seems like this is the only forums around that post some good builds. Like I saw some people posting earlier, I went the non ranged weapon route as well. Reason I choose this is due to a habit from some good ole d2 mods. More dex = more dodge and more block rate. I literally stood in front of the final boss and blocked/dodged all his attacks. Top it off long as you can keep smoke screen up, the monsters/boss just stands there picking their nose lol.
I'm holding out till I can get shiruken cloud, but current my twin chakrams are my main attack. I was using impale with impact on bosses, but now they seem to have a crap load more life (meaning fight drags out longer), and there minions have alot more hp. If they do perhaps reach me, and smoke screen isn't up, or I want to finish off a mob I toss up fan of knives with retaliate.
What I'd like to know from some of the higher lvl demon hunters out there, is what is your dps? Right now I'm about lvl 35 ish, and doing bout 705 dps. I pretty much have all my gear dex with vit when I can afford it. I achieve the dps with a mostly dex, +damage rings/ammy, and a weapon socketed with a ruby (currently p-ruby) .
Recently due to nightmare I had to keep my eye out for gear that had dex/vit/int for resistances. I'm guessing though if I dual wielded crossbows with rubies socked, I could probably do even more damage. Though that comes at a price. Just like sacrificing dex for vit, or int. That's how I see it at least.
Honestly this build sucks prior to getting chakram, because Impale costs to much hate to spam. And really shines with smoke screen (since you can keep dps going while having it up). Now my main thoughts on why I wanted to be in the "fray" and not back far off with a bow, is due to the similar idea that "hammerdins" (yes we all hated them) in d2 used. Not sure if any noticed, but if you use the twin chakram, and stand right in front of a creature, BOTH hit them (then continue onwards lol). Since even with fast attack speed, being far away still takes a second or so before it reaches the target or when you get the aim right. So hitting with two at a time, is very nasty.
We'll see how I survive in hell mode, and through any other challenges this game throws at me. I just like to play unique builds, and had tons of fun with a melee sorc in d2. The melee wiz in d3 just isn't the same as d2 melee sorc lol.
I wouldn't recommend any die hard gamer, who wants to take this class to its max potential by using this build. I simply am doing it for fun. Though it may be more useful in pvp.
One last note, anyone else feel like there playing castlevania with a demon hunter? Lol, I swear using skills like vault, throwing knives, and chakrams all over the place makes me feel like a vampire hunter @_@.
Edit:
Nearly forgot to ask, does anyone know if the beta info from the legendary items or set items is anything near accurate? I'd be awesome if natalya's set was in the game....just curious ;p

I was at about the same place when I was your level, maybe around 850. I was dual weilding 1 handed xbows, each with some form of ruby. At level 44 in NM now, and I'm at 1.5k, which I feel is low. I haven't found many exceptional bows or quivers along the way, and I sacrifice a lot of dps for vitality. I think I have about 15k health or so. Once you get used to having lots of + vit gear on, it's hard to sacrifice the health. I've found that socketed helms with amethyst is a good way to compensate for such dropoffs, howeve.
I have a question for those of you using elemental nether and hungering arrow, do you ever use hungering arrow for single dps? I find myself still spamming nether and wondering if I should change hungering to entangle chain gang.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/demon-hunter#aRjXVT!Yce!ZZbZcZ is my current build in act 2 inferno. @ Espy, not using nether, but i find myself spamming my frost ele arrow even in single target, hungering mainly when im lacking hatred. SS/prep as a lot said befoire, is a must in inferno. Vault left my build around early hell. The immunity is just too good to pass. As for the passives, hardly any other are somewhat good, there are a maximum of about 6 viable passives total depending on the build.

I'll switch out for my bat often depending on the fights.
Basically, elemental arrow with Marked for Death for AoE and Impale for single target or lines of mobs.

Going hardcore on my first play-through, without reading up on any bosses or something like that (that's why it's so defensive).
