DH is the squishiest of all classes just because they have the least armor and resistances. All other classes have loads of modifiers to boost those up. However, the demon hunter has a lot of potential healing! Some suggestions take em or leave em would be taking Smoke Screen and Preparation. At level 35, you can rune Preparation for a 60% heal on a 45 sec cooldown. Then, even later on you can get healing or 15% damage reduction on Sentry if you like. The Aid Station combined with Brooding passive not only puts Wizard's Galvanizing Ward to shame but scales with you further to boot.
I just ended today's gameplay at the start of Act 3 and only died once on normal due to just being carless and standing still like a noob. I am enjoying the gameplay style of the DH as you have to be on the move and put distant in front of your target to be effective. You have to use your traps and slows so that your if your using extra dmg passives they will be effective. Nothing like vaulting in to lay a trap and vaulting out that allows for my distant and slow passives to put a lot of damage on when I use my offensive skills.
You're a hunter, don't get cornered. Try to plan up ahead before entering the room/corridor. I always put few traps in front of me (spike ones) before entering the room. Fire a few chakrams inside, some arrows to check if there is anyone inside then go in.

I'd say yes. As someone said, our defensive abilities are mostly reactive. We do however.blow some motherfuckers up.
On say mortar/frozen packs I die a lot. I cant stand to shoot, and the free when smoke screen is down will drop fools!
just food for thought, when you hit nightmare mode as a DH, most standard mobs hit for 1-2k melee and ranged. If you're stacking dex and have less than 4k hp you'll not enjoy the odd times you take a hit in act 1. In act 2 you'll die. A lot. Act 3 is not a viable option with less than 4k hp. Even in a group they will get tired of res you.
A lot of the time you can kite. I made it to act 2 last boss NM with 1.8k HP and over 2k dps. Belial would sneeze and I would die. I joined a group and then due to him focusing someone else I was able to burn him. Act 3 was impossible.
I then started hunting vitality gear. I went up to 6k HP and down to 1100dps and had a MUCH better time through act 3 and into 4 where I started having trouble again with 2nd boss since you can't kite him without lucky stuns. This was 7k hp and 1700dps.
Then I went up to 12k hp and down again to 1200dps and it was a good time. Eventually I just joined a group and blew through act 4.
Hell mode...... 12k hp or 16k with vitality set and 2600-2000dps was not enough. Now I am close to 8k dps and 10k hp. MUCH BETTER.
So I guess the short version, play with a group. Even public groups are better. Every second enemies are not looking at you is huge damage potential for your team. It's also damn nice to breath once in a while. A Wizard as comparison has crystal armor which allows them to build more squishy and survive the accidental hit.
DH is VERY squishy. We honestly are the true glass cannon as I don't these issues with Wizards. I'm soloing Inferno and I'm up to act 2 right now and the key to surviving so much is to just straight up use Smoke Screen as much as possible with the Lingering Fog rune. Along with preparation, you can tank mobs for a long time by immuning and you can skip stuff/get away very easily.
Exactly this....Smoke Screen + Prep is simply amazing
