First off I am still vigorously trying to get a beta account. My question for those that have beta is how functional is the strafe ability? In videos I've seen its a far cry from the strafe in d2. Does the ability always make you a random shower if shots or is it based on enemy location?
Let me clarify...when I say far cry I mean its hard to compare the abilities when, in my mind as far as u can tell, they are extremely different in functionality.
It's based off enemy location, but it will target environment and destructibles as well if they're around which can hamper your overall dps with it. Fun skill though, one of my most favorite.
It's my favorite DH beta skill =) By far the fastest skill to destroy the environment when no enemies are around.
Don't be confused though, it's not an aoe. It has a steady attack speed, so if you're in a big group you're more likely than not to run out of hatred and not have killed a single mob (since it's a random target, you can't burn one down), BUT, it's usefull if you've already softened them up, or their numbers are lower, like a pack of 4-5.
I'm not sure I like the base version of Strafe. I played around with it a bit and do have footage of it, but it felt abit too random on what direction it was going to fire even with only 1 or 2 mobs nearby. It could have been because of all the destructible items around me, but it didn't often hit targets I wanted it to as I was using it to get some distance. I will say it's very nice for fast moving enemies that like to swarm because you can try to get away and the damage is just enough to kill a few as they chase. It's not bad for attacking on the go, but I think the runes for this ability are going to be what makes it shine.
Fair enough, apologies, I am not in the beta. Back when I played Diablo II I tried using Strafe to deal with crowds, much preferred Multi-shot w/ the old Buriza-do-kyanon or whatever it was for multi target damage and slowing.
Personally I found it a horrible skill. But we can only do it as it's base move so it might get better with Skill Runes. However, being good at destroying the environment is not a good reason to use a skill, and it's really only that great if your surrounded, which you shouldn't be.

great info so far. From what i've seen it looks like a quasi random multi mob hitter but not quite aoe. I'd like to see it against just one mob and nothing else to see the hits and firing patter. Anyone have the ability to post a video?
I love Strafe. It's like the Demon Hunter's version of Whirlwind. Think of it like an AOE version of Rapid Shot. Like Rapid Shot, you fire really really quickly, except instead of a line, it's all around you. You'll move toward you cursor, but you'll hit enemies in any direction.
It's really great for enemise like Imps because they scatter and run quickly, making them difficult to target with other skills.
