Talking about differences, will the skills have weapon requirements? Like I cant really imagine a rapid shot with x-bow, or a bola shoot with a twin-x-bow, though I dont think they want to restrict us.
The only restriction that I can think that they will impose is that the Demon Hunter must use a bow or xbow weapon.
I know that Blizzard was thinking about making some of the Monk's skills weapon dependent, but they changed their minds. So I really doubt they will make the Demon Hunter have these restrictions while the Monk does not.
Another thing I want to point out is it is likely that Hatred costs and chance-on-hit effects do not scale with weapon speed. What I mean to say is, unless things have changed, skills will require a set amount of Hatred to use (modified by passives). Spamming Multi-shot with a slow weapon is going to be cheaper because you deal more damage with fewer uses. Since it uses a % of weapon damage to dictate output, you will not really be gaining more damage with a slower weapon in the long term, but it is kind of like comparing a shotgun to a garden hose. Burst damage is more beneficial the shorter the lifespan is of the subject.
Double crossbows, relatively speaking from what we have seen thus far, are not necessarily all that fast. Shortbows are still likely to have a higher attack speed... but both crossbows are used to calculate skill damage. Double crossbows can have good Hatred-to-damage output in addition to being a proficient weapon for just basic attacks and procs.
As with a lot of things I think this will eventually boil down into two camps:
Camp one: Min/Max people who will go for the absolute most DPS, no matter how boring it is, or what kinds of utility they give up to achieve it.
Camp two: Those who want to look awesome. They will dual wield pistol crossbows while wearing an outfit dyed all black and kill monsters with style, even if they give up a small amount of total DPS to do it.
Personally, games are about fun for me. If I can look awesome and do awesome things, that's what I'm going to do, even if it's not the 100% most efficient way to play. That was how I played in D2, that's how I intend to play D3.
From the leaked screens below, there are 2 hander crossbows, plus it looks like you could even add a quiver to the slot on the right. I'm not sure if a quiver is considered a weapon slot or will every DH be able to equip one. Although in the item tooltip for quivers, it does say off-hand and there doesn't seem to be slots for 2 crossbows plus the quiver.
