Imho "demon hunter" is rather bland and boring for this class.
Granted I don't have a better idea for a name at the current moment but I really think this class should be renamed to something more fitting to its play style. I mean, "demon hunter"... Aren't all the classes effectively demon hunters as well, lol? I mean... They all hunt demons anyway... It just seems rather unfitting and boring.
I think it's more: demon, hunter. Not a hunter who hunts demons, though he does that as well.
Some other name ideas; stalker, scoundrel, sharpshooter, sniper, nomad (if the DH is from a desert region). Stalker is way better than derp I hunt demons.

I definitely disagree. Warhammer Online kind of does that and it ends up with names like Squig Herder. Like it works since there are so many classes but when theres only 5 you can use names that define the class.
But ALL the classes hunt demons lol. They ALL kill demons, they are ALL powerful and in the end they will all be killing the same boss. "Demon hunter" just doesn't fit because... they ALL hunt demons. You could rename this class to something else and keep its lore and sub-story intact. I mean how exactly does changing this classes name effect that in any way whatsoever? It doesn't. Unless you can explain to me how it does?
"demon hunter" meh it just doesn't work for diablo in my opinion because all the classes will be killing demons equally.
Imho... expansion will have a "undead hunter", you saw it here first. If the team for diablo isn't going to get any more creative or original with naming this class than "demon hunter" then "undead hunter" wouldn't surprise me at all at this point.
It's sort of situational, all the classes happen to fight (not hunt) demons.
Think about it.
Besides, undead aren't invading Sanctuary, so story wise it makes little sense. I see where you are going with what you are saying, but all classes are part of their own cultures.
Barbarians don't hunt demons, they stayed in Harrogath and lived their lives peacefully. They act as spiritual protective warriors, trained to protect the Worldstone.
Wizards/Sorcerers practice magic, not always to hunt demons or for any destructive reason for that matter. They study the arcane to further themselves.
Witch Doctors are tribals who commune with spirits and practice the dark arts. Most probably to help their tribe and protect their people.
Monks live in solitude to study the gods and their knowledge of them. They revere creativity and will stand up to anything that threatens the sanctity they wish to uphold.
Demon Hunters removed themselves from society with one purpose in mind, finding ways to combat hell's legions. It's all they do. They have no special cultures nor
There are two things you are overlooking here:
1. The Demon hunters are killing machines. They are weapon and trap specialists and damn good at that. Saying they can't kill undead, because they focus on demons are like saying an archer can't kill a man cause he has been shooting targets his entire life. Or a soldier that specializes in antitank warfare can't kill foot soldiers cause he's only good at shooting tanks. Which brings me to my second point...
2.They specialize in killing hell's legions, and hell usually comes along with undead and corrupted beasts. So, a demon hunter will be able to kill undead minions as they are fighting to get to the undead's demonic masters. They are demon hunters, because they kill the masters (demons), and not merely their minions (undead and beasts).
Just to add, I don't feel completely repulsed by the name. When I saw it first unveiled at BlizzCon, I sort of liked the look and feel of the Demon Hunter. I'm not exactly attached to the name either, I mean, it's just what you call the class, it won't really negate any of the extreme pleasure that I will experience once I play the game.
Honestly, they can change it, or not, and this goes for any of the classes in the game. As long as it's fun, I wouldn't care less about Blizzard's name plans.
Shaman and Rogue would have fitted so much better, while still inspiring the same thing.
Also these two names would not have changed anything regarding lore and semantics about the class.
Nothing is stopping a rogue from using shadow magic while being trained in the deadlands and nothing stops shaman from using zombie summons and weird spells.
Rouge is from Diablo I, which I presume you kid never even played at all.
Go to school, graduate from college with a computer programmer skill & make your own game. Then name your characters whatever the heck you like to. If you've nothing to do than fag yourself in these threads, help out in the house, wash the dishes, do the laundry, heck even vacuum the floors to pass up the time being useful.
For Diablo, leave it to the professionals. We avid Diablo users who had played since Diablo I came out like the name Demon Hunter just as it is.
Wait for the game to come out, if you're gay & you really don't like the name, then don't use it.
Think this is good reason enough to disable guest posting. All you're gonna get is this.
Yet Demon Stalker was already used in WoW as Hunter Tier 4! Seriously, if a word used to define something could only be used once damn near everything we play would have to be different.
Demon Hunter is a perfectly simple and straightforward name, just like all the other classes. It's a general name meant to invoke thoughts to what it pertains, after that you the player makes the rest of the story for that character. If someone dislikes it then don't play it or complain to Blizzard, I'm sure their customer support would be delighted to take your complaints.
Stalker, not Demon Stalker. Demon Hunter isn't simple because it has two words. WoW has nothing to do with anything in this topic and we know they're probably not going to change the name at this late stage but it doesn't mean we can't discuss better alternatives.
I mean it's a mouthful to say. Barbarian, Wizard and Monk roll off the tongue nicely. Even Witch Doctor is easier to say. It's pretty obvious that all the classes hunt demons so IMO it would have been better if they just called the class Hunter or Stalker. It still matches perfectly with all the lore.
I see what you mean, yet it has the same amount of syllables as Barbarian does. As for all the classes hunting demons there's no contention there, yet for the Demon Hunter it is what drives them, it's the only thing they exist for. As she said in the video "I stand alone, and if they keep coming, I will never stop killing."

Yeah, I don't think some people around here get that.
Like I said in my post earlier, other classes have their own cultures and things they strive and live for. And they don't hunt demons, they just fight them, there is a difference. The other classes are good at fighting, and so its logical that they will be able to stand against the demons.
On the other end of the spectrum, Demon Hunters do that and only that. They trained themselves to fight hell's legions and go out of their way to do only that.
I know it has the same amount of syllables as the Barbarian, but it has a space in there. The space tips it over the edge making it too much to say every time you want to talk about the character (which will be a lot). It will probably get unofficially shortened to Hunter in game.
To be honest the entire backstory they've released is a bit weak. I mean it's so cliché - her family gets killed by demons so she becomes obsessed with revenge and spends every waking moment training and hunting evil. Boring. The name does reflect this so I think we all get that she hunts demons. I'm kind of banking that there's a lot more to it than this. But what Blizzard has released is a bad first impression compared to the other characters which feel more thought out.
This name fits the character far more than any other name would.
And fyi 'rogue' to most long-time gamers says a stealthy melee class using daggers and specializing in backstabs and subterfuge.
The first use of the term I can think of was in DnD second edition, which is nearly 20 years old - far older than diablo 1. To me the Diablo 1/2 rogue always felt really off. It doesn't suit any aspect of 'rogue' I'm used to. Using 'rogue' for Diablo 3's ranged class would again be far off. Same with 'stalker' - stalker feels like a melee archetype again. Same with Assassin.
And to the people that feel 2 word names are silly... that's an opinion you're welcome to but you certainly must by now acknowledge that at least half of the people out here disagree with you - probably not much more than half, but at least half. I'd be inclined to say that anyone who ever played dnd 3rd edition would disagree, since so many of the specialty classes and even some of the regular ones used 2 word names. Also anyone who played any of the heroes of might and magic games, even fans of games like wc3 would disagree since so many used 2 word names.
I personally find that the length of a name isn't what matters, nor whether the name is 'plain' or not - it's how well it describes the character in it's entirety. And a character in it's entirety is more than just a playstyle. It's a history, an origin, a motivation, and so much more. And knowing what we do about the Demon Hunter in Diablo 3, it really is the best name for it.
Not to mention that I wholeheartedly agree with the person who says that the Demon Hunters probably didn't name themselves. They probably were given the name by townspeople who didn't know what else to call someone who devoted their life to making demons know what it's like to be hunted, to know what it's like to live in fear of someone.

I agreed, Stalker would have been a good name.

Guest posting is just an horrible thing all around.

I also know WoW has nothing to do with it yet others have brought it up, I was being a sarcastic ass with that remark.
