So last night I was looking through my numbers and noticed I had 17k armor and like 800 resist. I took out all my emerald gems to see the difference and it took my armor to around 14k and my resist to 1200. But I lost 400k damage.
Now for GR purposes is it better to have my resists higher and have less damage or should I balance and up the resist and run with 1.4mil damage?
700-800 all res is usually good enough for anything in the 30-45 G rifts. Id go for the dmg as you will be better off killing mobs faster as Gorok said. Although if you are having trouble staying alive id mix it around go 2 Diamonds in the pants and the rest Emeralds or vice versa.
Edit: Also remember to get your secondary's right. You can get a lot more all res if you can get the right res on each set of gear. Like the helm/gloves/amulet/rings. Since you wont be getting all res on those pieces(at least you shouldnt) try and match your secondary resist up.
Thanks for the input. I was torn it was nice seeing the big sheet number lol. I usually mix some in but I just recently started playing the DH again so I never really maximized my approach till now. I am the least knowledgeable about this particular class
You need a baseline amount of toughness (as other said 700-800 ar, and i add around 400k hp) to be able to survive the unavoidable damage from certain affixes and/or certain mob types.
For the rest, damage scales up very quickly to the point that you cannot stack enough toughness to survive; plus in a GR point of view, you need mostly damage to be able to finish it in time. "Cheat death" passives are useful because they give you an effective second life for a little damage tradeoff, but in the end less dying means faster clearing.
Going really high GR levels means gear optimization for the build, fast reflexes to avoid stuff that would instakill you and some degree of luck to find the best density/easy mobs combo (way less needed after the patch).

Right now with the straight damage approach I can get to 35 didnt try the 37 I got from it yet. I didnt have time to test the resist approach.
I dont really have an aim I just like to go as high as the character is willing.
