Previously- Holy Retribution-Fires of Heaven
Hey fellow Crusaders!
I'm seeing a lack of new builds on these forums so I figured write out a guide to my build and my opinions on the crusader class. This build works as either a Holy or Lightning build andDOES NOT USE HAMMERS. I have nothing against the hammer builds, I simply find them dull and boring. This build is much more active and most importantly you get to hit things with your actual weapon. None of this throw a magic hammer and sheath my weapon bull.
Here is my profile link:Vycaus
I'm not claiming I'm 100% right about all of this, or that this build is great for everyone. I know this build works and that I can do t3-4 with no issues.
Introduction So the primary focus of this build is Holy Damage and Fist of the Heavens>Divine Well. With the recent buffs, This move has become amazing. This build is about spamming this move and destroying what ever torment you see fit to crush. This build is also very interchangeable with lightning, FotH>Fissue, and I'll be sure to add in the moves section what are appropriate changes.
Gear
No specific legendaries are required. A holy damage weapon is needed to get the most out of this build. Look for one. Plenty of other stats are helpful, but you can change your skills and immediately succeed with this build. Primary stats to look for are %holy damage and %Fists of the Heavens Damage. Even as holy, %lightning damage still has benefit.
Blade of Prophecy and Thundergod's Vigor are two items that play well with this build, there are several more but its not worth listing every legendary that compliments these abilities.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________ Stats Things to aim for, not required.
40%+ Crit Chance
300%+ Crit Damage
20%+ Cool Down Reduction (My fav stat, I'll go over why at the end).
X% Holy damage (any and as much as possible)
500+ All Resist (torment 1, 700 for t2, 900 for t3, just ball park figures)
30+ Maximum Wrath (A great stat, you get this with one passive, will go over later)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________ The Build --- Overview
This build is similar to the lightning hammer build in that we will be using provoke>charged up, and Akarat's Champion>Rally. I'll go into why it doesn't matter that Provoke is lightning in a holy build and the strength of individual moves later. The mission is to get a lot of damage over time/multi hitting abilities to cycle our cool downs while AC is up. With this build, I can hit condemn about 7+ times in a champ pack. Record is 17 on a 3 champ pull in a t4 rift.
Slash>Zeal / (Electrify)- Holy damage and AS. It hits in a small cleave, so you get a bit of AoE around it and you actually hit with your weapon. Seriously of all the generators this is the only one that does that. Punish hits with your shield, smite is a wrist flick, and justice is magic hammer throw. 190% weapon damage is still pretty good for a generator. I love this move. It has the added benefit of having all the magic properties in runes as well. So fire/lightning builds can get % Slash damage and still use the gear. Electrify has a great aoe stun chance for lightning saders. You can stun lock tons of mobs with this.
Fist of the Heavens> Divine Well / (Fissue) -This move is simply awesome now. The sparks that come out of it hit for full damage. so you can hit that archer on the oustide of combat for 6 million with this move now. Also each spark strikes near by enemies for damage also. The shear amount of damage you get from this spell is amazing now. Spam it on single target, on aoe, doesn't matter. Go kill things.Fissure-This is a great alternative for lightning Crusaders. Just make sure you put the impact locations so that the lightning is going threw the packs you want. Each impact chains to every other one. Make cool patterns, put up traps of electic "fences" for champions. Doesn't matter, this move hits like a truck to go have fun with it.
Provoke>ChargedUp- The meat of this build and many other builds. This move has so much utility its hard to describe just how good it is. I simply hope they don't nerf it because it is an absolutely fun button to hit. First up, its a wrath generator. 30 Wrath and 5 per target hit. With Enough CDR this has such a short CD that you'll never claim we have wrath problems again. Second, Taunt. Not super important but in a multiplayer game you can keep things off your teammates a bit and for things to hit us. We are meaty, we should abuse that. Lastly, and most important, all your moves hit for additional 50% lightning damage. The damage itself isn't important. It certainly helps and is nice, but the benefit here is that for 4 seconds all of your moves hit twice. So during AC>Rally your moves basicallly cycle immediately because everything is getting hit so frequently. It's a ton of fun. This isn't new to you Lightning Hammer guys.
Heaven's Fury>BlessedGround- Another frequently used move, doesn't mean its not amazing. This move does a ton of damage on single target and AOE. The ground effect ticks like crazy, as does the beam from the sky, with Provoke up Stuff just melts. Hit this on cool down, enjoy the numbers.
Condemn>Unleash- The best part about this build. In the patch on Tuesday that made this ability work with AC>Rally. Before that this move wasn't cycled, and it sucked. Now, this move can be used several times during AC. It crits for about 15-25 million and you can use it 4-17 times, basically as fast as you can push the button. We use Unleash because we want to be able to use it again frequently, not have to wait 3s for the explosion. Stuff just dies, enjoy it, go kill things.
For Lighting Builds-You can change this skill to something more your liking. A law would work here or any move you like to hit. Even as Lightning spamming this move is going to do a ton of damage.
Akarat'sChampion>Rally- Our big CD. 100% Wrath gen, 25% AS, and a revive. Some don't like this move. I love it. It's the whole reason this build works and exists. Try to not trigger the revive as you lose the benefits of the ability at that point.Use this on champ packs and bosses.
I use Thundergods Vigor even though this is a holy build. Its one the only belts in the game that has a %ele modifier on it so its not as if you are sacking %holy for it and it procs lightning to things that attack you. With provoke up, you force things to attack you, thus procing the lightning damage and causes more hits per second and more CD reduction from AC>Rally.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________ Passives and/or Heavenly Strength –Duh
Righteousness - This is way overlooked and underused. Its not just about generating more wrath, its about maximum wrath. It allows you to get more wrath from provoke, should you land a well placed one, it allows you to start a fight with a higher pool, giving you more damage up front, and most importantlyit scales with Reaper Wraps! The Wraps give you back a % of your resources. A higher maximum means more Wrath per health globe. Stop complaining about wrath gen and use the tools Blizzard gave you.
Holy Cause - You need a holy damage based weapon for this to be 100% useful. But the build is holy damage based and you'll see a ton of healing from this ability alone. If you don't like this passive you can pick a defensive here.
Wrathful - This is prob our best healing passive. 825 base healing per wrath is huge. Little math, 825*30 = 24750. Each cast of FotH will heal you for 25k. This is amplified by your health globe bonus. You may look at the 1% and scoff, here's more math. .01*20000 (rough amount of health globe stat on gear)= 200. I have about 60000 Health globe bonus on my gear, this means I heal for an additional 600~ life per wrath. 1425*30=42750. I have about 490k life, so this is roughly a 10% healPER CASTand that's not factoring in Holy Cause healing.
So I'm sure you've noticed there are no defensive passives here. Blizzard gave us 15% damage reduction on Tuesday. They essentially gave us that defensive passive literally. If you feel you need more survivability I would look to optimize it on gear. Armor is basically covered by having STR primary and a shield, so socket AR and get AR on pieces you can if you feel you are dying to quickly.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________ ParagonPoints Core- Movement Speed > 10%, Then Maximum Wrath. The strength you can get here is simply gravy, you don't need it. More wrath means move moves means more damage.
Offensive- CDR>CC(if under 40%)>CD>AS This is subjective. I simply feel CDR is one of our most important stats and look for it where I can get it. If you feel 50% CD has more worth you can swap CDR and That.
Defensive- AR>Life%>Armor%>Regen - AR is basically always the best here. I like life% next because it helps with Holy Cause healing and to generally help with life pool.
Utility- Area Damage>LoH>resource Reduction. We heal plenty from our two passives, and Area Damage is really undervalued by the community I believe. If you want even more healing take the LoH first. Subjective choices here.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________ Stats and HowToPlay
The basics is to put Heavens Fury up for a second or two, then hit provoke/condemn/FotH. Just go hit things and use your abilities. On champ packs pop AC> and hit the buttons as fast as they come up. Its ok to recast provoke before the effect is over as long as you are spamming FotH and have wrath to refill. This build was made to blow up elites, but works great on single target and white mobs too. Not a lot of weaknesses here other than the lack of bringing things to the team. No Laws, no judgment>resolve. This is about you wrecking face.
CDR- Why it’s important As a damage dealing class, we are spiky and CD based. Its just how it is. All this comparison to wizards and sheet dps is meaningless. A wizard doesn high sustained dps with basically no burst. They are gonna throw the same hard hitting spell 10+ times. Crusaders have super high peaks of damage and then a lower sustained damage till CDs come back up. CDR shortens the time between these peaks. So if a fight takes 10-15 seconds, the amount of moves you can get off in that time is crucial. CDR is flat reduction. Every % you get directly lowers the spells CD by that amount, so if you can get to 50%, your moves are effectively halved. A key consideration is that most crusader moves have a duration or effect. Heaven's fury is a good example. 20s CD and a 6s duration. As the CD gets lower, the effective uptime of the move goes up. 6/20 = 30% up time. But with 40% CDR, the CD is now 12s. 6/12 is 50% up time. That is how CDR impacts your damage. Forget complaining about long CDs and valleys of nothing to do. Gear against it and into a strength of our class, buttons to mash.
Don't rely on sheet dps- This is a big fallacy. Sheet dps is fine for a guide, but it ignores so many factors that it is largely irrelevant. It doesn't take into account %elem or %skill, or CDR. The three things we want to stack as much as CC or CD. Let the wizards get to 1.5m sheet dps with 3 damage passives and 3 passive moves on their bar and then spam one button. Sounds boring. If I kill an elite pack of 5 mobs each with 50 million life in t3 in 5 seconds, math says I do 50 million DPS. profile says I do 700k. Sheet dps is meaningless. Its good for comparing certain stat upgrades and has its uses. Don't swear by it.
This is a really well thought out spec and guide. I look forward to being able to try it out! My gear is much lower than yours, if you'd like I can make a video and showcase how it would work for a lower geared player as well, then maybe you can make one for a more geared player. Might enhance the credibility and let people see it's versatility.
I can see it working very well even without holy dmg. Throw in holy dmg and it will scale incredibly well. I also love that you pointed out some obvious things about CDR and wrath gen that many people seem to miss. Another tip is to try to get wrath gen on weapon or shield as that can help hugely (though it can be hard to find the right weapon / shield to forge into that).
I have actually never done a video... ever. I should look into how to do that and post one. I'm sure its not that hard. If you'd like to show a lower geared vid I'll post a link in the guide. Thanks for taking the time to read it. Every time I sit down to write a guide or something like this it is always so long. However I feel if I cut things out I don't cover all I want.
Sounds good, the best programs you have to buy. I'm a teacher so I don't make much money and have a pregnant wife at the moment. Trying to earn a few extra dollars getting into streaming this summer when I have some spare time. I figured I'd find some awesome guides people made and offer to make videos for them :). I already purchased software to do it years ago so that helps. There are some free programs available but if you want a really good one you usually have to pay for it. Fraps is good for just recording. Cam studio (which was more expensive) has editing options as well and is good. I'll make a video for the build tonight and post if when I get done with post editing for it :).
I do some live streaming and videos. I'm going to test out your build completely tonight and will post back with a link to the video and stream. Looks like a fun build. I may try swapping some items around but in general I think it looks fun.
It is a ton of fun! I've got about 105 hours on my sader since release and this is by far the most fun. I'd love to put your videos in my guide though! Let me know your thoughts and if there are things you like/don't like.
I'll do my best to keep this updated and perhaps make it look nicer. I think that requires HTML coding skills though, which I lack.
This is sorta the same build I was using on my HC Crusader. Wasn't fully geared for it but i was aiming for a perma spam FotH-Divine Well build. Instead of Slash-Zeal i was using Justice-crack. This idea is heavily based on attack speed and resources. Obviously wanting to use a 2handed flail and crusader shield with each having as much wrath regen as possible. The only item missing from my build was the reapers wraps which i believe would have completed the build.
Besides Justice-Crack and FotH-Divine Well, I mostly used abilities with no resource cost and a cool down. So the other stat i was aiming for was CDR. I had Heavens Fury-Ascendancy, Condemn-Unleashed, Phalanx-Bowmen, and Steed Charge-Endurance. All of those except phalanx are Holy damage and all benefit from CDR affixes and %holy dmg.
Passives were basically the same: Holy Cause, Righteousness, Wrathful, and Heavenly Strength.

Making a video in a few minutes for it. If you'd like help on formatting and spiffing it up I can help you with that as well since you're willing to feature my video and help out me and my wife :).
Omg it is so much fun I can't even describe! I'm so glad I found this build because wow! Making the video was pretty exciting too as I got some pretty nice loot :), you'll have to watch and see....though I did start rambling a little I think in the middle (long day at work with 3 hours sleep). But I'd love some constructive feedback as well about videos. I made a few minor suggestions about alternative passives to Holy Might, though I do think it's powerful too. Just wish I had a holy weapon to take full advantage of it.
Uploaded and working, see the video, like, comment and click ads if you'd like to show support <3
Not sure why youtube downgraded the video quality so much. I might try to make another video for it later this week and re upload it. Will have more gear at that point too and will show a good comparison between completely undergeared and slightly more geared. EDIT: I have a second video much shorter below, and am reuploading a Hi-Def version of this first one which I will post tonight once it's processed with youtube. Sorry for the annoyance and thanks to those who tried to view the lower resolution one, my apologies. The build is AMAZING and the first run I recorded is actually quite good at spotlighting it (second wasn't quite as good). Hopefully I'll have a higher quality vid for you to put in the title post tonight if you want Vycaus.
Figured out what went wrong will create a higher rez video.
Different video but much higher resolution for video viewing. First video was better so I'm going to try to salvage that and make it look better and reupload it as well later. For now here's a second better quality video:
I just want to say thanks for making this post. Very informative and useful. I played with this setup all last night and enjoyed myself immensely. Thanks again!
Hmm, I hadn't considered that. Prob to late to change the name now.
I can change it in the video guides and reupload later if you'd like me to alter it :). That 22 min guide I have a better quality version coming online in the next hour or so.
When it goes live it's url will be:http://youtu.be/Zf9d7wFmJ_8
you'll want to replace the one in your main post with this one :).
Changed the name a bit. And URL changed for vids
You don't need to change it in your vids though, That'd require a reupload for like a 1-2s difference right? Not a big deal.
Could probably stick an annotation on the video which would fix it easily enough I suppose too instead of re uploading :). Anyway, thanks for the amazing build, I love it, and thanks for featuring my video :).
If you ever want to add me and play feel free Zanthyst#1267
Glad I could help. If you have any comments or questions don't be afraid to ask. I'll try to check back here to keep the build updated and answer any questions people may have.

Different video but much higher resolution for video viewing. First video was better so I'm going to try to salvage that and make it look better and reupload it as well later. For now here's a second better quality video:

When it goes live it's url will be:http://youtu.be/Zf9d7wFmJ_8
you'll want to replace the one in your main post with this one :).
Edit: Uploaded and good to go
You don't need to change it in your vids though, That'd require a reupload for like a 1-2s difference right? Not a big deal.
