I wanted to post this build by our member Contra2828, because it can probably be useful to a lot of people, but I didn't want to post all this text on the front page, so I'll quote what the author of the build has told me and of course, you can all share your thoughts, suggestions and questions here
Hi there, just wanted to write a little text guide on the build i have made for leveling crusader in hardcore, this build is incredibly safe and also does insane burst damage.
Pros - Instakill burst if your DPS is moderate - Good sustained and AOE damage - Fairly safe and tanky - Focuses on debuffs, and burst combos that are fairly easy to execute.
Cons - As with crusaders in general movement speed is moderate - Upfront burst may not instakill if you are not geared enough for difficulty you are playing in - Somewhat formulaic and non dynamic game play
Gear Focus With that being said, this build will work with just about any gear, but you will want to focus on these stats in priority for HC: Strength, Vitality, Resistances, Life% Critical Hit Damage, CDR, The rest is up to personal preference.
Passives - Blunt: This ability increases your damage from both your Justice and Blessed hammer which are both used in this build. Solid skill choice. - Lord Commander: This command is essential for this build, it allows you with a small amount of CDR to have boulder up for every pack you fight. - (Optional) Heavenly Strength: I use this because my current best weapon is a 2 hander, this one is optional and can be swapped for tankier options or better offensive passives - Holy Cause - This skill is essential and is scaling health return, no matter how good your toughness gets this life restore never falls off, making it essential for survivability.
Actives - Justice - Crack or Holy Bolt: This comes down to personal preference, I prefer Crack as it seems to build wrath better. - Blessed Hammer - Limitless or Thunder Struck: This hammer is based on preference and gear. If you have more + lit damage thunder struck wins out. Keep in mind if you choose to run thunder struck you lose out on the sustain provided by limitless / holy cause. - Bombardment - Impactful Bombardment: This is your bread and butter for elite packs, you want to use this skill after activating your law buff and judgment on the target. - Judgment Resolved - This increases your chance to crit by 80% and roots enemies in its area of effect, this skill is essential to the build - Heavens Fury / Condemn - Any: This is really personal preference and adds supplemental DPS - Laws of Valor / Critical or Shield Glare Divine Verdict: Both of these skills are great debuffs, you can choose the one your build benefits more from (20% if you are well geared, Critical if you need more CHD)
Dealing with enemies
- White Packs / Judgment : Throw hammers and use judgment to clear packs quickly - easy enough
- Elite packs / Bosses : Activate your buffs (shield glade or LoV) , Judge the target(s) then let it ROCK! get it? Okay drop bombardment and heavens fury / condemn if the monster is not dead by this time you will continue to kite using hammers and justice until the skills are back from cooldown (this is where CDR hurts the most is the sustainability of delivering this damage consistently.)
This is very similar to the Lightning Hammerdin build that is indeed good in terms of farming speed (and an amazing build for SOFTCORE) but I have my doubts about how good this build is for hardcore.
I mean, I've played diablo on hardcore for a REALLY long time and the biggest danger that will most likely kill you is the following: getting a really nasty elite pack . As an example, if you get an elite pack with frozen, arcane, waller and fire chains you are basically dead if you are running this build (and fast by default, for example soul rippers/angel/ghost packs are extremely fast without the actual fast affix). The reason for that is simple: lack of utility/survival abilities that will help you deal will with such a pack, the assumption is that you are able to burst down the said pack with your laws of valor/bombardment/heaven's fury/judgment combo. So if your gear is not that great and you are playing on higher difficulties I don't think this is a good build. To make this build viable for hardcore you really need to pick up something for better utility/survival or you will just die.
You should actually try higher torment difficulties before making a build.
I have to agree with Devizz... This is basically a worse version of the Lightning Hammerdin with less damage, less survivability (no Akarat's Champion in a HC build, what the actual fuck?), and the Lightning Hammerdin is NOT the way to go on HC by default.
For HC I would advise everyone to use Devizz's build instead of this, unless you want to intentionally lose your character. Crank up that Torment, Bob, five will most likely kill you within a couple elite packs, six will guarantee an insta-death the moment an elite pack looks at you!
I know this isn't too related, but I wonder since when was it okay for the staff/mods to advertise their own posts on the front page?
Its my build and i had no problems running it in higher torments.
This really was just a skeleton demonstrating the use of judgement and laws of valor , you can swap in surviability skills for less burst damage but this is the way i enjoyed playing even in hardcore. It is open to interpretation but you could easily drop LOV/shield glare for akarat or steed depending on your prefrence. I just like to live dangerously, i never claimed this was the SAFEST available build for HC it is just an option and is fully customizable.
PS. Devizz i did run this build successfully all the way up to torment three, it may however not be viable for torment 6 but since there hasn't been adequate time to experiment this guide was just a quick and dirty to get people started exploring different skills on the crusader.. I apperciate your feedback however
What is with everyone hypingDevizz's build in every thread? His build is hardly going to work at higher torment for AOE and is very gear dependent, kill speed with such a build is very lacking compared to many other builds that can be executed with much less item dependency.
Comments about builds without akarat's champ is rather funny, it is not needed in every HC build. Can always tell the people who do hardly any research and jump on bandwagons following other people.
To be fair guys, Crusader is the newest class, so cut him some slack for not picking all of the perceived best talents.
Don't rage at this guy, rage at the idiots who can't understand basic class fundamentals after they've been out for 2 years instead, those are the true tards. At least this spec isn't completely awful.
Well even though i do not play HC i have used Devizz HC build for a while and it is really great for survivability.
Because i got used to the Skills and Passives from Devizz HC, i was quit hesitant to try Contra's build with my SC Crusader. But i am glad i still did, because it is a lot of fun to play. All the skills and passives work really well together, and i kill mobs faster then i could with Devizz build. ( With the same gear. ) Also due to the fact that my Crusader has almost 604.000 health in game, the health return from Holy cause is really nice when doing Holy damage. Combined with Health regen...life per hit and Health globe healing bonus, my Crusader has a nice survivability at the moment. ( In my opinion that is. )
But i make no illusions...even though i play on SC i know my Crusader is not without faults, and is most definitely far from being Great. For instance i need to raise her Resistances, because those are not where i would like to see them. But that will come in time through Paragon points and items. Both Devizz HC build and Contra's build are great in their own ways.
