With the new season having started, and it honestly being rather disappointing as far as build diversity from previous seasons goes, I thought I'd finally post this thin. This here is my analysis and ideas on how to change under-utilised sets and skills for different classes to bring about some freshness to the game. This won't discuss sets that can be made viable with just a simple number tune-up, but rather sets that are downright outclassed by others in every way. I'll be starting with the Crusader.
Of the four available sets the Crusader has, Invoker has been dominant for three seasons now. Therefore, understandably, it will not be covered here. Nor will Roland's and Of the Light. Although both sets are rarely used currently, I feel that giving them just a few numbers buffs can once again make them viable. That leaves us with Akkhan's.
Oh, Akkhan, how I miss your glory days. Right around Season 2 was when you were last viable. You were versatile and strong, and now you're fully overshadowed by Legacy of Nightmares for that same reason.
That's right. The current Akkhan's is essentially an inferior LoN. Although this could be fixed by a numbers buff, that would make LoN an inferior Akkhan's. The problem stems from the fact that Akkhan offers no real playstyle of its own and is entirely dependent on off-set pieces to create the playstyle. This lack of playstyle is in term caused by placing so much emphasis on Akarat's Champion in the set bonuses, nevermind the fact that Akarat's Champion is not that good to begin with, especially when compared to similar skills of the other classes. It's only saving grace is the free second life provided by the Prophet rune.
i would like to keep the versatility of the set, but restrict it in some way. To fully bring the set up to date I propose the following fixes. Do note that each fix is independent of the others, but can be combined into an overall fix:
Fixes: Remove the four set bonus and add a new off-set item that provides the bonus. This is essentialy the Vengeance treatment. The new item will in turn be usable by the other builds as well, and should not be too OP since Akarat's Champion is still not that great of a boost.
Change the fire starter rune of Akarat's Champion to: Dealing holy damage while AC is active causes the target to burn for additional 20% Weapon damage per second for 3 seconds. This effect stacks.
Change the Akkhan's 4-set bonus to: Akarat's Champion gain the effect of every rune. This leaves Akkhan's Addendum worthless for Akkhan's set, but still useful for the other sets and gives the Akkhan set the whole better Akarat's Champion feel.
And finally the kicker: Change the six-set bonus to: While Akarat's Champion is active, all damage taken is reduced by 30% and all HOLY damage dealt is increased by 900%(this number is subject to change, though it should be balanced currently). Why just holy damage? So as to not screw with LoN, and to make use of that nifty new rune. The versatility of the set is still intact, and can be used with many skills, as most Crusader skills have at least one holy rune.
With the Sets done, off we go to fix the unused skills!
Blizz have done a great job of making previosly unused skills usable again. However, the Crusader has one skill that has escaped this. And that is Phalanx. Instead of awkwardly adding it to the other sets' playstyle, I've thought up a completely new set based around the Phalanx skill for the Crusader. Lo and behold, the Lord Commander Set:
2-piece bonus: Gain permanent Phalanx Bowmen and Phalanx Bodyguards that follow and protect you.
4-piece bonus: Your Phalanx avatars remain for 1.5 seconds after reaching their destination. This affects the no-rune version, the Stampede rune, and the Shield Carge rune.
6-piece bonus: Increases the damage of your Phalanx by 1200% and their attack speed by 30%
This set focuses on you amassing a lare army of phalanx avatars, gaining more and more when you cast the skill. The avatars from the 4-piece bonus gain the increase in duration from Eternal Union.
The effect of the Warhelm of Kassar gets changed to: Increase the damage and reduce the resource cost of Phalanx by 30-45%
In addition to the set, a few new items get added:
Kassar's Cuffs: Legendary Bracers: Your damage taken is reduced by 4-6% for each Phalanx Avatar you have, up to 60%.
Kassar's Riding Girdle: Legendary Belt: Steed Charge gains the effect of the Draw and Quarter rune and each Phalanx Avatar increases the number of enemies bound by it by 1.
Tactical Charge: Legendary Two-handed Mace: Justice deals 30-40% increased damage and generates 1 additional wrath for every Phalanx Avatar you ahve active.
Hope you enjoyed my ideas and can't wait to hear some feedback.
