Im Sure opinions vary alot on what is the best setup for your follower and which to use. So i decided to start this thread about it to ask for others thoughts on what i did with mine and how i geared it.
Follower: Templar for the lps, heals and the knockback with heal when at low HP.
Relic: Cant die one
Neck: random with str, crit chance, dmg range and socket
Ring 1: Unity with str, chc, chd and elite dmg
Ring 2: Justice Lantern with str, chd, socket and block chance
Weapon: azurewrath with 9% dmg, str and socket added with gift (24.2% chance to freeze on hit)
shield: freeze of deflection with str, crit chance, 11% block (26% total) and socket (blocking has chance to freeze attacker for 1.2 sec)
total dmg is about 524k, it use to be over 700k. use to have an ancient thunderfurry on him before switching to azurewrath for the chance at freeze.
My questions for you people is, think this is a pretty good setup or should i go back to the thunderfurry for more dmg? My templar has 58% block with shield and ring. Also has 24.5 crit chance and 150% crit damage. Seeing as crit damage dont seem to show in templar damage would it be better to roll the chd on the unity to a socket for more strength?
What is your ideal follower and gear for them? Please post your thoughts and ideals on what you think is the best setup.
I like to use the Ess of Johan necklace for the crowd control proc.
I do have 2 of them in the bank i been meaning to reroll for some dps stats or a socket for use on the templar, forgot about that.
Usually play 2 player with my brother so i dont use my templar much. He is still mad at me since this season he gave me the templar cant die relic since he had one for his enchantress already and we have yet to see another between the 2 of us and we are both paragon 530s.
Bul-Kathos wedding band? I use that. I THINK I've seen it tick for 100+ MIL before and I read that a lot of people use that. Helps when trying to burn down the RG and I also use a Sunkeeper with a Diamond. Ess of Jordan for the neck. Unity for second ring and deathless relic, of course.
I feel like no matter what I equip him with, I never see a HUGE difference (except for the Unity setup).
Do not shoot for any Crit Damage above 150% as that's where your follower caps out. Generally, you can reroll your 'Follower can not die' relic to nearly 100% Crit damage and then finish it off on your neck. I go for Crit Hit Chance, + damage, primary stat, Socket (for more of the primary stat), Attack Speed for the other stats left. Basically, just remember to always go with offensive stats with the 'cannot die' relics, because, well, defensive stats seem a bit pointless, don't they?
Also, I don't believe that +elemental damage helps much, but could be wrong. The reasoning behind sockets in your gear is this: Followers receive 2.5 times more Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence and Vitality per stat point
I would say that it depends on your need. If you play better with the increased CC, then stay with that build. If you need a little more dps, then go back to thunderfury.
Meatheadmikail (sp?) has a follower guide on DFans that's pretty decent. Just replace his gear with ancient versions and you'll be up to date.

arent we on Dfans site now? tried searching follower(s) and meathead and didnt come across anything, any chance you can provide a link to their post?
Another nice amulet might be overwhelming desire, act3 bounties. Gives a small damage boost from time to time, and a bit of crowd control. Else ess of johan.
For the rest pretty much what joebakb says:
-50%passive crit damage
-100% crit damage on token (and block chance if you go with freeze shield)

Basically he states that the Bul-Kathos wedding band proc scales with physical damage, and benefits from elite damage on the RG for example. So he says to use a Sunkeeper (+elite dmg) and Lidlesswall (+physical dmg), as well as the wedding band ring and an SOJ (+physical dmg). Red gems everywhere possible including the weapon. Not sure if this is only PTR/patch 2.2 or if it applies to live servers.
I don't have these items myself so I still use the Azurewrath and Freeze of Deflection combo, with Bul-Kathos wedding band. Sometimes Thunderfury instead, for the CC proc.
Follower DPS will always be shite so I see little point in focusing on anything but crowd control, CDR and IAS stats on its gear.
I've seen some followers tick for 100M with good gear and a bul-kathos equipped. 100M ticks are still pretty substantial.
Well I'd wager if your templars Bul-Kathos tick for 100M (which I'd lke to see before I entirely believe it) on a RG then 100M is probably not all that much compared to the damage you must be doing yourself to successfully do GR's at that level.
It wasn't my follower, but it was on the video that I referenced earlier in the thread.

-50%passive crit damage

-amu: min-max damage, cc, str, socket (str)
-unity: str, cc, elite%, socket
-2nd ring: justice lantern: cc, str, socket, block% (freeze shield) or bul kathos wedding band: cc, str, socket, min-max damage
-weapon: any. Thunderfury or azurewrath for crowd control, sunkeeper highest potential damage. Socket (red gem), str, min-max damage, 10% damage, probably attackspeed or damage against elites.
- shield: freeze of deflection (for freeze) or lidless wall (for damage): cc, str, socket (str), block% for freeze, physical damage % for lidless.
If you want full dps and no unity (perma serenity monk for example), physical SOJ with cc and str for second ring.
