Let me start by saying I'm strictly a melee barbarian using a life-steal/rend brawler build which immediately makes me unusual. I actually take my time going back and forth between waypoints in ACT3/MP7 depending on my mood with a complete disregard for efficiency. Some days I feel lazy and do battlements and some days, I'm feisty and do Arreat. I actually stand around and fight until the mobs are dead because I still pick up all magic and rare items. I have 15 keys of terror ... I actually had more of them and a few of the other keys and did the uber bosses ... but the idea of endless farming for the offchance of making a ring (particularly with my luck with drops and loot) has no appeal. Here's the really strange part: I watch these speed runs of WW barbarians and am left cold. What is the allure of racing through ACT3, barely caring if anything is dying in your wake, completely ignoring 99% of all drops? I guess I eventually want to be PL100 and do ACT3/MP10, but then what? I'm only PL36, so I've got weeks ahead of me ... at the rate I farm, maybe months --- and that, strangely enough, appeals to me.
I don't see the need to rush through the act so quickly. I take it as slow as I can, it annoys my friends because they just want to blast through the act. I explore every dungeon, pick up every magic and rare, and I love it!

I know what you mean.
Playing a Wizard myself, with a Meteor / Archon / Arcane Dynamo Build in higher MPs because i hate the 0815 CMWW build.
Friends keep telling me "how are we supposed to manage MP10, if you dont play it?", but we are managing MP8 just fine.
On the end you own Game Experience and your own fun counts, dont listen to all the Morons out there.
What is the allure of racing through ACT3, barely caring if anything is dying in your wake, completely ignoring 99% of all drops?
Yepp, been doing that for 75 Paragon levels...now i am also slowing down a bit, picking up everything.
Mainly because i want to give crafting another shot and i dont want to buy everything on the AH (even though i could).
Like i said, dont listen to the Clone Army... play your own game.

I'm exactly the same. I play to have fun and not rush through acts and/or being efficient. Watching some of these WW-barbs go through entire acts in just minutes doesn't really seem fun to me either tbh. I think most barbs that run through acts as quickly as they can only do it to level up as quickly as possible. What?! Only playing to level up? Isn't that what most people do in D3?
The build I use is probably only used by 0.01% of barbs. And I don't care, it's more fun to play with my barb build personally. The barb is the archetype of brawn and power, and that's what I want to experience playing with a barb (If you wanna know how I play with my build, just ask ) and that's exactly how he feels when I play.
You have to realize that picking up trash like Blues and ilvl 58 rares is slowing you down a ton. Plus they are worth like 1k gold to the vendor which is garbage. There's a reason good players get good stuff on a regular basis while you go for weeks not finding anything worth selling. Efficency. You get 100 items from which 99 of them are probably garbage while a WW barb that picks only the good stuff gets 10 items, 5 of them being sellable on the AH. Think of that.
Don't get me wrong, I used to be like that too. Picking up everything that droped but after watching some streams and doing some research I bailed the idea of picking every shitty item up. It's much more faster to pick only lvl60+ rare items and legendaries (ofc).
All the things you said I agree with, but that's the thing, the OP doesn't care for efficiency. Diablo is a loot game and he is simply playing the loot game, regardless of how inefficient it may be.
The reason I play D3 is because I like the hunt for gear, I like the rush when you see something nice drop. I play D3 solo most of the times but I don't rush it and farm my brains out, I play it in my own pace. Playing the game with very high efficiency isn't my style, it's not relaxing. This doesn't mean I pick up blues I can enjoy the game even if I'm slacking a bit, running back 30 yards to pick up that 2k gold pile ^^
I don't see the need to rush through the act so quickly. I take it as slow as I can, it annoys my friends because they just want to blast through the act. I explore every dungeon, pick up every magic and rare, and I love it!
No need to feel weird because you play your class in the way common sense tells you (in the way that barbs go face to face with stuff and not run away from it). I play as Seismic Slam one with Vigilance (legendary polearm) and whenever some other barb sees it they go "what the ... ". But its ok. I actually stopped pickin up blues as they dont really are worth the effort. The inventory looks alot better in all-yellow. Those speedy ones either are so by nature or just jumped on the roller-coaster and when they get to the end they dont know what to do anymore, wheres you will have enjoyment for a loooong time. About drops - keep at it, sooner or later better ones come to all of us.
Exactly (to all 3 of you ), as I mentioned above, Diablo is a loot game. The hunt for loot is what keeps me coming back wanting more. I also only pick up yellows/legendaries. Since i have all 5 classes above level 60, picking up yellow/legendary items with one character, carefully inspecting each one wondering if it will be an upgrade for any of my other chars, is what makes the game fun.
I honestly haven't even sold 5 items on the gold AH for more than 800k each; so gold are scarce and getting better items on the AH isn't really an option. I can also add that I have only bought 3 pieces of gear [my monk's 2 weapons (AH) and my barb's weapon (in a pub game)]; the rest I found all by myself. This makes the hunt for loot even better, more fun and definitely more rewarding.
I guess im the opposit. I want efficiency, the more the better. The way i see it is, this game is about farming gear and gold. This game is about having fun. I personally dont find it fun to be bad, at what the game is about. Why play a 20m xp/hour build when you can play a 80m xp/hour build.
The more xp you gain per hour
The more mobs you slay
The more loot you get
The more good loot you get
The more legendaries you get
I personally cannot see the fun in playing slow, getting little reward for the hours you play.. Thats like playing etc Need for Speed, but refusing to switch above 2nd gear.
To me fun comes from efficiency. The more efficient i am, the more im rewarded. The more i gain for my limmited playtime. I find it "fun" to achieve more gold, more good rares and more legendaries spending 10% of the time, a slowpoke spends. Guess thats just a personal prefference.
Being bad at whats the game is about, is no fun for me. (Its a farm/grind game, its a game where you farm to develope your character, making it as badass as posible. Being inefficient is counter productive.
Counter Productive = Not fun, but a waste of time (My oppinion)
And where goes your efficiency when you reach 100 Huminator?^^
Most people quit once they reach 100.
You make it sounds like getting to para 100 is easy. Faster paragon levels is just a bonus to being efficient. The MF from each para level comes faster. Being efficient is not an XP thing only. Being efficient is also rewarded in gold and shinies(loot) and we all love them shinies.
Some people quit when they reach para 100, but alot more quit before.. I dont catch your point.

Sounds like, to you, the game is fundamentally indistinguishable from a job
So because my personal prefference is the get most out of my playing time. It must mean i play the game as a 2nd job?. If you ever cared to read what i wrote above. You could see what i found FUN. And you could see that i do NOT consider playing counter productive as fun.
If I copy the build and gear from other players, the char wont feel its mine. Even the AH might feel distant because of this. Learning what works and what not and enjoying the game and the numerous dungeons at nice pace is where the satisfaction comes. I beat this game with my own brains not with someone´s else.
That's how I feel about the cookie-cutter WW-barb build. If you get the correct gear (can even be mediocre gear) for this build you can blast through a whole act in minutes. Some people find this fun, but I'm just not one of them :Thumbs Up:
I've replied in another thread about the WW-barb build (1, 2)
Basically what it says is that on diabloprogress, out of all the paragon 100 chars, 44% are barbs and out of the top 50 paragon 100 barbs, only 6 didn't have WW. Yes I know most people play the barb but a percentage of 44% or even 40% of the people that has the barb as their main, are really high.
From an old reddit survey (12 000 participants): Basically evenly spread at 20% each class as main. Also more than 50% said the DH is the most powerful yet only 14.4% of the total para 100 are DH. (I don't play the DH, so I don't know how they were buffed/nerfed, but they are still probably the strongest.) As far as I know are barbs' survivability far greater than DH and why most para 100 are barbs.
PS The numbers might have changed by now and the survey I gave in that thread are very much outdated (June), so it might have also changed.
But still, a month after release, many people have already hit level 60 and was busy playing in Inferno with the surveyed participants' about 20% of each class as their main. Then why such a big increase in barb players when the paragon system was introduced? Barbs just are faster farmers.
I play to have fun and not rush through acts and/or being efficient. Watching some of these WW-barbs go through entire acts in just minutes doesn't really seem fun to me either tbh. I play to have fun too! However, rushing through an act or finding an efficient farming route and blasting through that as fast as possible, slaying monsters left and right (and very efficiently) is what I happen to find to be fun. Just because something is hella effective doesn't mean it's not fun.
Add me onto the slow moving kill everything pick everything break everything explore everything barbarian as well
I am just at Lvl10 and with 2sets of each key and having way too much fun. Legendary items till date? The grand total of 1 grand vizier! Do i care? not really, just tuned off that antenna and just having fun with the game.
Used to be a dual wielding frenzy/rend barbarian till yesterday and now got a skorn so switched to cleave/rend. The sheer damage of Skorn is amazing. With only time to play for an hour or so every day, fun becomes essential especially after a hard day's work at office.
As mentioned many times before, it all comes down to "why do you play this game?"
The answer varies player to player. Some like to enjoy the scenery/graphics while slowly making their way through. Some people just want to spill blood, as much as possible. Some people like to try new builds, crunch numbers, and experiment. Some people want loot. Some people want to make a statement somehow. Etc.
After all, this is a game, and you're meant to have fun however you want in the game.
For me, I speed through 90% of the time. The other times I intentionally go for the item hunt (this is usually when I'm in dire need for gold) and pick up as many potentially sellable items as possible. My goal is to hit 100 and then start farming at my own pace without worrying about EXP efficiency or MF. Or better yet, get my alts to 100.

Playing your char at its full potential. AkaThe best and fastests way ye?
Or when you play car games, do you also stick to 1st and 2nd gear only to "enjoy" things? xD
