I'm curious if subsequent Rends stack. I'd assume they don't, but I've heard people talk about "spamming Rend". Which would be pointless if it didn't stack...
what he think "stacked rend" is not a stacked rend - it is a critical rend. i've been using rend since patch day and i've done some testing.
rend's tick can not be critical, but the inital application of rend can crit, and all next ticks will do increased damage
different damage ticks come from the displaying system:
it displayes an average damage for last X time interval, and if you apply a rend in the middle of that interval - firts tick will be shown as half of the tick damage. if you refreshed a normal rend with critical rend, you may see a damage value like (normal rend tick + critical rend tick) / 2
it doesn't stack...
i have never seen any critical dmg dealt when rend is in effect. Spaming rend is like have the same effect as monk's sweeping wind.
If Crit: all ticks act as if it crit(still in white text, but increased based on crit dmg)
If hit: ticks normal and will not take crit dmg into effect.
Simple as that nothing else is true thats how it works. That is also how Trail of Cinders works for DH(who can leave sharpshoot up at 100% and have it always "crit")

Aye this is true, the actual ticks still appear as white text but they are multiplied by your crit damage and obviously the chance these ticks will be higher is based on your crit chance. You see no huge yellow numbers at all and the crit occurs when you do the Rend animation.
so Blizz why do rend crits not appear yellow? It would help greatly to know when you dont have to refresh rend on a mob(s) because its critting. In fact this is the only thing holding me back from going crit/critdmg build with rend.
Rend already does phenomenal damage with good weapons and high STR. With 2k+ STR and 8+% LS rend is enough to help you tank acts III/IV with 800 res all.
I <3 Rend! I use rend with my two hander build and love it. I believe the question has already been answered that it does not stack, but does critical. But yeah, just felt like letting everyone know my passion for this sexy ability.
I've been testing Rend(and using it since patch 1.0.4) and there is definately something up with multiple applications of the skill. Until someone can point me to a blue post i will believe what i see with my own eyes.
I always believed that once Rend was applied, there's no point using it again till you saw the bleed icon removed from above the mobs head, well thats what pretty much everyone believes right?
So, i went up to a single mob, applied Rend to a mob i knew i wouldnt kill outright and did nothing else but let the mob bleed, mob lived, had around half life left. Went and found the same mob, applied Rend 3 times(ran out of Fury) and the speed at which the mob bled out was noticable, the mob also died. Is it possible that there may be a bug with Rend, that its not "stacking" damage per se but putting on multiple timers. It wouldnt surprise me, buggy game is buggy after all.
I have a suspicion, completely unfounded, that the critical rend ticks are the first ones only, which would explain why spamming them sometimes gives the impression they are stacking (which they definitely are not). I am very fury conscious, so I personally like rend to exhaust itself before I apply it again to the same group of mobs. I also like to hit the champion packs with a rend, run away a bit, and jump in and do it again --- sometimes I have them offscreen and realize they stopped following me --- time to loot!!!
I agree that the "multiple" applications of rend on a mob are actually just a critical application and not "stacking" as some have said already. I have been using rend since 1.0.4 and the only difference I notice is when I get a critical application vs a non critical. But never a stacking effect
So, any clarification? ^.^

I have +272% crit dmg, yet the difference between my critical/non-critical Rend ticks appears to be 3k (8k, 11k, if I recall correctly)
it does use critical damage modifier. 20k ticks -> 80k ticks for me with ~300% critical damage

gear?
You can overwrite a crit application with a non-crit one.
That's all.
Edit: I get around 30k non-crit ticks and ~120k crit ticks in my gear. http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Cyberwaste-1162/hero/770381
