Has anyone progress past act 2 and beyond without touching the AH?
I only ask because I am spending millions on Act 3+ items just to progress in Act 2. I also ask since melee are the only classes that rely on much higher tier to be viable in act 2. I feel the AH is a stash of Act 3+ items gained by DH and wizards that exploited OP abilities pre-hotfix, that later allowed the rest of the classes to progress past act 2 in inferno for those who bought them.
I'm assuming no one is past Act 2 in hardcore since the first hardcore Inferno butcher was killed AFTER the hotfixes, so the AH is clean of act 3 and 4 items gained through broken builds
I don't see how you could verify anyone's claim if they said yes.
That said, I think avoiding the AH is the kind of self-imposed limitation that people create to make the game more challenging and fun. I'm sure someone will "finish" the game without the AH at some point. Similarly, someone will finish the game as a Wizard without ever spending a point of AP. There's always someone willing to go to extremes for a novel sense of accomplishment. I call that "awesome".

I grew up gaming without internet forums. The entire phenomenon of being upset with a game developer makes no sense to me. No sense. I cannot imagine spending my time and energy being upset about something I choose to do for recreation.
Im on the 3rd quest of act 3 and I havent brought an item on the AH since i was on act 1. I spend about 600k a bit after I finished Hell on resistance gear (and got a few pieces from friends, but nothing too fancy, just standard str + resist or str+vit). The last item i got was a 40 all resist + 70 vit ring (yes, its really lame but i didnt want to spend so much on the ah and my previous ring was even worse)
I farmed 5stack butcher about 6-7 times alone and about 4-5 times belial with some friend.
I guess i got my gear from those runs, i dont really recall. I only recall getting a few pieces (boots, wep, shield, helm, legs, neck) but I dont really recall where I got the rest of it.
Idk, I may had a bit of luck, but there is no need to go to the AH to go past act 2.

Yeah but once you self impose this limitations don't expect the "beatability" of anything.
I agree you shouldn't need Act 3 gear to progress in Act 2 though. But you don't. My brother is farming Act 2 inferno right now using an melee wizard. His not buying Act 3 gear (lol his not enough gold farmer to do that). In few hundred magda runs he find a piece that is worth selling for 200k~1kk and he gets something around the same price. Step by step his upgrading his gear and reaching hardest dungeons.
It's how the game suppose to be played. You need to farm an few doze hours in each place in order to have enough stats to beat the next (i dunno, maybe 20 hours or more). In inferno you gotta progress step by step.
Of course getting items from further places is easier sometimes if you got the money. But it's not the only place.

Is that sarcastic? English is not my native language and sometimes its kinda hard to catch euphemism
The strat im using on act 2 and 3 is to run with 2 tanks and 2 dps. A monk, 2 DH and me. The trick is to perma cc everything, i run with stomp, leap + stun and stun rune on frenzy, and the monk runs with another stun or something like plus the blind. The thing is to pull as many mobs as you can handle and try to perma cc until the dps kills them. Some times you may need to pull a bit less or you will die really fast, a few times you may pull a bit more... idk, my gear is not that great (about 350 resistances unbuffed, about 600 i think with both shout and monk aura, 53k, 8.7k armor )
I was literally just about to make this exact post. I am finding Act 2 Inferno to be nearly impossible even after hours of farming Act 1. I wanted to see if I could solo the whole game without the AH but this is waring me down. I'm going to try and make it but we'll see.
All the AH does is allow you to trade items you find that have stats that are better for someone else for items that have stats that are better for you. Just reduces RNG, doesn't break the game or anything. If your drops weren't useful to anyone you'd never get enough gold on the AH to buy anything and if items were impossible to get without gear from the AH then there wouldn't be any up for sale.
That said, if you want to play without using the AH go ahead. Diablo has always supported players making challenges for themselves. I'm actually playing that way for the moment, only up to Hell so far but that's more because of work
Well, I have 10k armor. 51k health. 950-1020 all resistances (physical resistance at 1140).
I have melee damage reduction of 8%.
I also have 24% block, 20% dodge.
I have ~13.5k damage.
First elite pack in act3 demolished me like there is no tomorrow.
I farmed act1-elites and butcher at least 50 times (5valor stack runs).
I farmed act2-elites and belial forever (done 15ish full clears of act2 with 5 valor stacks).
I also farmed act1 skeleton mob in warriors rest (as a farming spot posted here)
I also farmed in act2 spot posted here too.
I got maybe 200 rares just from these 2 spots.
I use my Magic Find gear (I have total of 210% mf with 5 valor stacks)
I DID NOT RECEIVE A SINGLE UPGRADE TO MY GEAR VIA DROPS, EVER, After I finished hell and started playing inferno.
I WAS REQUIRED to buy gear from AH just to have a chance in act1 inferno.
I finished hell without buying anything, but then hit a brick wall and had to visit AH a lot.
The only reason I can now fully clear act2 is because I bought items from AH.
And I will still need at least 10-15 million to spend on various items to have a chance in act3.
So yeah...
Sorry, but you're full of shit. There's absolutely no way you're getting "demolished" by elites in act 3, and if you are it's your build or you just plain suck. Many people have killed diablo 5 stacks with worse stats than that. So either you're lying about your stats or you suck.
Yesterday I bought some things at AH. I reached about 11.2k armor, 47k hp, 12k DPS(bad threasure gun 860 dps, 1.62 hps) and only 680 physical resist(other 700-800). I really had problems with 34% blok with block amount 3.7-4.7 in ACT 4. I dont know how to get much resistance. I lost all my dps, when I had bought ring for resistance, vit, block chanse. Will it really help me, if I buy stormshield(it`ll give me 100 all res, but block amount is worse and my current shield has 21% block), change amulet(it give me 150 str, 120 vit +8% HP adn 300 life per hit...). Should i find amulet with all res and life per hit? To my mind i need only 4 things... stormfield and amulet, as i said before, and gun with socket for lifesteal and shoulders (my give me 660 mitigatioan, 150 str, 150 vit, but only 14 all res). I am afraid, if i buy this things i will totally lose all my dps, it is really tiny now, 12k is a joke. At the end i can say, that i cant find balance... i thought that mitigation will help me, but 13k (with ench) it is not enought... or i am doing smt wrong way..
