Farming Gear instead of using the Auction House.

I'm a level 56 Barbarian in the middle of Act 1 Hell. I read tons of threads about how Inferno is hard and you need to gear up for it to get better. I am having these same troubles (Yellow and Blue packs of monsters kill me lots) but in Hell level.

I like the idea of farming gear and not just buying all the best stuff out of the Auction House. Is there a way to know how good of stuff it is possible to find in Hell level Act 1? I play through a few quest, get tons of blues, and most of it doesnt seem that great at all, but sometimes I do find upgrades that are way better. I feel like I am still wearing stuff from normal(lvl rq

    Thank you for any help.

It's possible to find some "keepers" in act1 hell. But I think if you arn't playing the AH even a little, you are missing out on a lot of upgrades. It's cheaper than you'd think, if you just always check when you can ;)

Do not bother farming at level 56, you are not very likely to find anything good. At level 60, you will get the nephalem valor buff (giving you a large magic find buff) and then you will be able to farm act3-4 hell (I like to farm Cydaee + Asmodan in act 3).

My advice would be to level to 60 then farm somewhere you like (preferably hell act 3 or 4).

Thanks for the advice. I will focus on making it to 60 and progressing further into Hell. Good items do drop in Act 1. I have gotten some upgrades that are much better then what I had, but I am just having trouble knowing what is the best stuff I can expect to see from this stage of the game.

Using the AH to get some vitality/resist all gear, it pretty easy to get stats to farm Skeleton King in Inferno. There you start to get some semi decent drops...

Shop smart, not hard when it comes to the AH, you'll see tons of idiots trying to sell crap for hundreds of thousands or millions of gold, but you'll find some real keepers for tens of thousands, you just need to sift through all of the crap people put up, expecting to "make big".
What are you willing to sacrifice?

I imagine that there are great things to be had on the auction house. I want to play the game with out just buying all the good drops and by getting them on my own. I enjoy playing the game hoping to find upgrades. My main question was, How good of drops can you find in Hell Act 1? I dont mind staying in this part of the game for a while and then moving to the next Act to find the best that it has to offer.

Realistic drops aren't that good. And on top of that, you have to be lucky to find some with stats for a Barb. It doesn't help to find a good item, if it's for a Demon Hunter.

Get to level 60 before farming the nephalem valor is absolutely neccesary when farming. Get to level 60 and then find areas where rares are often usually in the large map areas where there are 2 dungeons your supposed to go to.
