The key to nightmare for me was upgrading my weapon every 1-2 levels. If you keep your weapon up to date, you can steamroll through most of nightmare. This is less viable once you get to Hell.

This is a low level build that lets you survive pretty easily and deal decent damage. Change cleave to frenzy with sidearm when bossing, you will rip every boss apart.
That build doesn't make sense, what do you spend fury on >_>;;;
But what was already said was right, just upgrade your weapon every1-2 levels and make sure str/vit are on every piece of gear. Profit.

Nightmare is really easy once you realize you need some vitality on your gear. Search the AH for items with Strength and Vitality, then check the items out and get something good (with life per hit or health globe healing). Get weapon first, then find some armor pieces with vitality. Shoot for 10-12k health and you should be good even without a shield.
Here's my build, I focused on stunlocking and AoE damage. The defensive passives were also essential, since it allowed me to stand in the middle of large groups and not die:
Furious Charge is your real bread and butter for handling groups. Just rip back and forth until you've thinned out the pack, then stun, dump fury with smash or cleave to build more fury as necessary. Use ignore pain to get out of trouble, and always keep Battle Cry up.
Leap->ignore pain->Fury Dump->Stun-> kite until cool-downs are up.

I grew up gaming without internet forums. The entire phenomenon of being upset with a game developer makes no sense to me. No sense. I cannot imagine spending my time and energy being upset about something I choose to do for recreation.
I just started act 2 hell. Was using a 2hander but decided to try 2x1handers for shits and giggles. I haven't had issues with either builds unless i run into a champion pack that has an ability combination that just rips through melee classes. Vampiric, desecration, firechains comes to mind >_>

This is a diverse build not focused on survival or pure damage. You can easily switch out the WW for something else but i use it when i'm stuck and need to move out since the build has no mobility skills. I spam my revenge like you wouldn't believe and it heals the crap out of me. My general strategy for champions is to run in and ground stomp, and start focusing one down with frenzy. As soon as i have enough fury to pop WotB i pop it and spam my revenge button whenever it's up. Generally my life on hit or lifeleach will keep my health up while WotB is up so i wait till it drops off and pop ignore pain for the remainder of the fight. Make sure your not standing in anything like desecration, molten, or plague. I use WW if i need to aoe for illusions but sometimes revenge will take care of that. I generally ground stomp again if my health drops and then pop a pot if my health drops again. USUALLY i kill them before WotB ends and i never use ignore pain but sometimes you get the extra health, life link, or nightmarish ones that cause you not to burn them down quickly. Then you have to change your strategy a bit. Don't get discouraged if you die to champions. Some packs just have the perfect set of abilities to own your face. Sometimes i burn champions down in a matter of seconds and others i get my ass handed to me over and over again till i figure out a way to kill them. I've yet to skip a pack though so they are doable.
As far as gear. Just make sure your gear has str/vit and some other helpful stats. Forget about magic/gold find for now. stack life on hit or lifeleach wherever possible. When i purchase items on the AH i set my max buyout for something reasonable like 10-20k based on what i'm looking for and set str/vit as the stats i want with a min value of around 50 of each. I started hell with 20k hp and i'm not sure how much dps...probably around 6k i think (at work can't check). I spent maybe 50k total on the AH for weapons and armor. Hell isn't so bad...it's inferno where your going to be tearing your hair out =)
Edit: also i have yet to come to a point where i felt a sword and shield was mandatory. i'll post again if that does happen though lol. find a build that works and that you like. hope this helps

So.. What builds would you recommend and is 2x 1h, 2H or sword and shield the best option for surviving?
