I just don't understand why we don't have Shield Bash\Smash and Spell\Projectile Reflect.
This is making me rage, there is no motivation to play with shields, fine, it adds armor, health, etc, but thats the usual stuff. Shields are supposed to be fun as well as protective, it should be a PLAYSTYLE rather then just equipping an item.
Why have Shield Bash when you have Weapon Bash? O.o'
As mentioned - different kind of play style. Having able to have a SPENDER that bashes the target with my shield for 250% weapon damage is freaking awesome.
One of the best spells in every game is Spell \ Projectile Reflection. Which could be amazing. Generates fury if you succeed, costs fury if you fail, 10s cd. something like that.
Jokes aside, I agree. It would add more reasons to use shields. But then again, if you have Shield Only-spells, it will kind of make people think that they MUST have shield, which in some cases could feel like you're required to use shields to progress instead of being just a nice addition to defense.
I don't understand your point. The fact that you have skills that reward shilled using doesn't mean it will crush other builds, its just another way to play the game.
I dont think there should be skills just for shields, however I think maybe a rune effect on some skills would of been nice.
Like a rune on Revenge could of made you deal damage + stun them if you had a shield equiped.
Similar things could of been done with other classes aswell.
Overall its something that would of been nice, but I can still see most people using shields at some point.
I agree that shields should be in the rotation of skills. For a series that has always had them, there are certainly not many skill that support them. None in Diablo I or III thus far, and only the Paladin had shield skills in Diablo II, and only 2 skills at that. I think there should be a skill that definitely supports shield play. Why not? Lots of the skills support specific weapon types, so why not a shield as well? Don't really describe a spell relfect skills as "necessary", however.
There are plenty of passives that DO require specific weapons/skills. A passive specific for shields would be cool. Perhaps the game designers felt there already are passives which directly affect armor, thereby including the shield.
I do agree w/ your post though. Shields can be fun, not just a + armor mechanic. The most fun I've had with a character was with my shield mage in Skyrim. He would bash enemies with a shield, stunning them, and then melt their faces with fireballs. He was squishy, but tough as nails with his shield raised.
A captain America shield throw would be a cool addition!
I agree with your post, although perhaps they should have given other classes shield type skills as well.
Maybe not "shields" per say but orbs and stygian dolls could have some neat skills associated to them and perhaps even persuade people to use them over 2 hand weapons.
Imagine a WD being able to stab his doll and have a nearby monster be inflicted with some sort of effect determined by the chosen rune associated with the skill.

That is a really cool idea to stab the voodoo doll.

One of the coolest ideas ever. There should totally be a "Cripple" skill for the WD with those visuals.
Id love to see a passive skill that gives stuff for when using shield, like X% more armor/vitality and and changes a ability like Bash to Shield Bash, but nothing more, or else it will feel like we NEED to use a shield, since big 2 handed axe>small axe+shield

It's very possible that the shields themselves have such an affix. We don't yet know that.
Remember that in D2 some weapons had an option to use 2-hands, in which case you'd only be wearing that weapon. But you could take that same weapon, put a shield and the weapon would switch to one-hand. In which case, you sacrifice a little bit of damage for a shield with stats, resistances, skills and other helpful shit.
abilities that require certain weapon are bad design imo
Very much this.
I second that. Shields are fine the way they are.
They have already implemented item based skills in D3, the DH is prime example... most of their skills require a ranged weapon, and although I can understand the logic behind not allowing you to use rapid fire while using a 2h axe I do think it would be quite interesting to have other skills available that would highlight the deadly skills a DH might have while wielding a bladed weapon.
i understand the want for shield skills, however in a game like Diablo i think the idea should be that wearing a shield increases survivability, not damage. I'd agree with your idea if your idea was more of dmg reduction nature, not a "i can own your face with my shield" idea. something like a rune for your threatening shout reducing damage by 90% from all sources when wearing a shield. doesn't increase damage but would certainly be nice in a group setting where you want to draw attention and not die...or for certain situations in pvp.
i'm highly against the idea of not having to trade off dmg for wearing a shield. if you want more damage wear a 2hander or 2x1handers.
Idk, Demon Hunter has skills that involve rockets, and only specific runes. Why can't we have runes that work better with shields?
Like in Battle Rage, the rune Ferocity is pretty bad :D, exchange it with something like "While wielding a shield, you gain an additional 25% *insert something here*", and some more skills that can do that.

Anyone else with me on this?

I predict an expansion class down the line focused on shields
