I played primarily melee classes in WoW for about 4 years. I've tried other ranged classes such as Hunters and Mages and don't get me wrong they are viable classes and loads of fun but I always found myself gravitating towards melee (my main was a warrior). I can't really put my finger on it but if I had to describe it in one word the choice between melee and ranged was always "safe". I always knew the point/goal of a melee character and never had to worry about running out of resources (mana/energy) like other classes and I never really had to worry about advanced survivability techniques like kiting. I felt like it was always a safe choice for me and it always happens in games that distinguish classes. My plan this time around is to go straight to the most uncomfortable character I can think of and master that. So when I finally get board and get that "grass is greener on the other side" feeling (which never fails to happen) I can make the switch and be comfortable with it and play it to the fullest potential while skipping that learning curve that ranged/magic classes seem to have compared to melee.
Since the days of Diablo II, I have always preferred a melee Barb, and specifically Whirl Wind. I can't think of Diablo without thinking of the unique class of the Barbarian. The in your face nature, whirl-wind of death! I only played one other class, the Sorcerer in Diablo2. It didn't do it for me.
I remember Ice-Blink and the ability to freeze your enemies as you blew through them over and over. I am hoping they have something similar in diablo3.
I also am looking forward to new features like Wrath of the Beserker and the passive skills. I think it's gonna be really cool to play the barbs in this version of diablo. In the end, I think the Barbs have the biggest chance for massive damage(When you take into account Criticals and it's base damage abilities.) My buddies and I are gonna have a competition to see who can have the biggest single output of damage. I am a sucker for seeing that damage after hitting something, the bigger the better.
I was a ranged/spellcasting type of guy in Diablo 2 and in WoW up through about mid Burning Crusade. Then I started tanking on my warrior and have preferred melee ever since.
Still haven't gotten a chance to play the D3 beta (Here's my fingers crossing thing), but from what I've seen, and I've seen a lot, I'm going to love playing the Barb. I now prefer to get in there and get hammered on and deal it right back than to kite stuff around. Something about cleaving baddies in the face, just makes you feel good after a long day at work
Barb definitely seems like a very fun brute force kind of class, but my concern with it in D3 is at the higher difficulties. With ranged it's always fairly easy to kite and kill large packs of mobs, but with Barb (and Monk) that becomes more challenging. Therein, as the damage levels pick up, I worry that it will become less viable, or at least rely more on RNG to determine if you life or die. That's why I'm going with ranged for my main end game, high difficulty toons. I will definitely play play Barb for lower difficulties, but just worry about survivability at high levels.
No matter what game I play, whether it be WoW, Skyrim, KoA: Reckoning, Diablo 2....I always play a heavily armored axe swinging berserker... killing everything in my path. Not to say I don't play other classes as well, but my first play through is always as some type of warrior/barbarian! There's nothing better than charging right into a pack of aggressive mobs and chopping their heads off with my giant axe! Even if ranged/magic using classes seem easier to level, I always find a way to make the barbarian type class work out just fine.
I Barb because I can..... And because I love busting into the action. I'll gladly leap attack into a swarm of baddies and tank for a range char. I think Diablo 3 is going to do a way better job of making the D3 melee chars feel a lot more viceral and destructive. It was kind of hard to get that feeling in D2 with the same whwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwh from whirlwind or thud thud thud from a club conc or berserk swing. In d3 I'll be switching from badass skill to badass skill trying to spend fury as fast as I can build it up. I'm really excited about the Barb in particular.
Looking forward to sending my first zombie hurling through the air!

I tend to lend more towards melee classes when picking up a new game for some unknown reasons. A couple examples would be starting out a hunter in wow being my first rpg and just ending up with playing rogue for three years. In swtor i picked up an operative agent, but quickly switched to an inquisitor as i fell in love with the tought of a tanking assassin class.
The reason for this i think comes from the feeling that i want to be within the combat, where it happens. I want to feel the dammage i do and the dammage i take, and i often feel squishy and missplaced as range.
I feel this is reflected with my toughts towards Diablo 3 game so far. I will probably be playing a barbarian, but the femeale monk looks awesome too, both being melee.
Playing melee classes has a great feel to it, that I don't get as a caster. I like to be up in your face smashing people with big weapons! I want to play Barbarian again because you feel so strong and you are at the front of the pack, always rushing ahead to kill anything that comes your way!
Barb will probably be my first choice to play in D3 because I want to use polearms and spears. too many games have swords as the most usable/best weapon often and I am quite sick of them, I hope polearms and spears will have top tier end game weapons.
Back when I played wow I always wanted to make a spear/pole arm warrior but apparently they were only good for hunters.
I will play a barb because my favorite weapon is the sword. I still havn't decided if i prefer a 1-hander and a shield or a 2-hander, but there is just something about having a big sword. Preferably one with a yellow glow. That right there is my ultimate weapon and the main reason I will roll a barb.
I like the Barbarian because I love melee, Being able to get in close and smash or slice your enemies to peices is a lot of fun. But what I like about what I see in the new Barbarian Talent Trees is the utility also. The defensive parts and the ability to weave them together to make it more than just run in and bash on things. I like that there will be some strategy you can formulate. I like that you will be able to design a barbarian to fit your own play style. I'm very excited for Diablo 3, I already bought the game, and with any luck I will get a taste of the beta at some point.
I have always like range fighters but to get the job done defensivly but still have high damage I have always crossed over to melee fightes. I have a Zealer/Smiter Palidin and a IK whirlwind Barb (first whirlwind I have played) in D2.
But the Barb in D3 does interest me a lot, the new skills/spell? at his disposal are pretty good and I am eager to try out Siesmic Slam. He has great defense and life leech and there are multitudes of differant ways to take him. Plus smacking monsters in the face is fun.
Ive always loved the barb in D2, the in your face smash and bash style was just fun to play. With D3 however ill be going with the monk. Still love the melee side of things but I prefer the tactic side of the monk to the barb. Combos and the mobility make me really excited to play the monk.
However, ive always liked ranged too. My first char in wow was a mage, years later I swapped to a rogue but still.. I think wizard or WH will be my alt.
I play barb simply because i just loved this class so much in D2. It's just so manly to jump into a wave of monsters/players head on and whirlwind everything to death! The warcries is what really made me fall in love with this for some reason lol. I would just spam shout, battle cry, and war cry like a noob outside of rogue encampment. I'm really looking forward to D3 and my first character i make will no doubtingly be a barb.
To smash in faces.
I've always hated playing caster/range classes, they've always felt boring to me. It felt as if I wasn't doing anything, like I wasn't actually playing the game myself. You spam an ability and watch it go off and hopefully hit the target intended, it felt very boring and out of the action. A melee character feels like i'm in the heat of battle, going toe to toe with my enemies, hearing the smashing sound of their bones and flesh, rending their bodies. It feels great and powerful to be melee.
I play melee classes because being the first one in the fight is the most enjoyable for me. Leading the charge as they say. Being the largest, and strongest opponent for enemies is a virtual love. I usually choose melee because melee classes always have the most bulky armor, and largest weapons. Looking badass is one primary key to any role playing game, or class based game in my opinion. If you look badass, you most likely are.
Throughout all of the Diablo games I have always done at least one Barbarian build if not for sheer fun then to do some random acts of idiocy to make my friends or son laugh.
however I think most who make one deep inside connect with the fearsomeness that comes from adrenaline rushing, meat cleaving beasts that are the barbarians.
but yeah I promise my first character will end up as a barbarian for me to go throught he game and learn all the little tricks and special stuff. Mainly because they can be considered a tank like the Paladins.
I was originally really drawn to playing a Demon Hunter in Diablo 3. I played a hunter in WoW as my main character for the majority of my time in WoW. I'm usually drawn to melee classes becuase there's nothing better than the feeling of smashing the face of an enemy rather than popping arrows or magic at them from far away. The barbarian seemed, at first to be too typical and boring and the Demon Hunter seemd new and exciting. I have no doubt I will eventually try all of the classes, and the Demon hunter will most likely be my second class played. At the end of the day however, I decided that I need to be true to my preferred play style and play your typical face-smashing melee barbarian!
I'm thinking of making a kind of survival barbarian that focuses on tank-like abilities and taking the hits for other group members rather than going for pure dps. Time will tell however, and I may find I can go dps all the way and still play a tank-like roll with friends without needing to build around that specifically. Either way I am excited for my first character to be a barbarian and I can't wait to see and play the bone crunching awesomeness that will be a barbarian in Diablo 3.
