1H Axes: after playing Fire Emblems i got psychoed about knights using axes. It's a weapon that gives a huge sensation of momento. Axes + Shield is my fav melee set.
2H Swords: i really love some large sword designs. Flamberge is such a beatyful weapon and looks great in the barbarian because it's "fragile" looks contrast with the barbs gear. Also i love large curved swords.. D2 didn't had any, i hope D3 have some.
Maul: one of the coolest D2 weapons and it's very diablo style (majority of the games ignore this weapon). I'm glad it's already confirmed to return.
Polearm: Halberd is one of my fav weapons for the same reason of 1H Axes. Spears is also great because of it's strategic nature. Naginata and war scythe is also very cool (i like curved blades).
Fist Weapons: I just think a barbarian using a set of claws may look great. The barbarian, as returning class, have it's visuals explored for a long time. I think a paradigm break like this can fresh up his looks well enough.
Ever since WoW , but I've been rather fascinated by shields (having played a shaman, a paladin and a warrior so seeing the shield on back built an idiosyncrasy with wielding one.)
Now I'm forever in a state of whenever I find a game where a shield class can offensively smack stuff with the shield, I obsessively try to play around it.
One handed weapon to go with shield doesn't matter, though usually not an axe.
My preferences change to often, so I voted for a whole bunch of them. I tend to start thinking about a kind of character, and then get jazzed about that kind of weapon.
Nothing is more badass than a flair, or mace, imo. Sauron agrees with me.
I actually have a replica of a real-life medieval flail. Dangerous as hell that thing. One night after I'd recently graduated from college, my buddies and I got into the drink, and I destroyed every piece of wal-mart furniture with the flail. Since then it is referred to as the "wal-maul".
I prefer bludgeoning devices personally. Swords are really inferior, imo, when you're dealing with an armored foe. Axes are better, but so slow.. Flails make the best use of physics to deal quick deathblows no matter what your opponent's armor. Plus with a chain, you can disarm people and/or break their weapons off amazingly easily.

That's awesome, I just picture a few drunken guys walking into wal-mart with a flail.. haha.
I agree with bludgeoning weapons being more brutal. I very much hope flails and other smaller more detailed weapons make a bigger portion of the weapons in D3 now that the resolution can go high enough where a flail doesn't consist of 3 pixels lol.

Two Handed swords all the way. I can recall the memories of running around with a massive Executioner's Sword before Lord of Destruction. Man that sword was badass, you could even dual-wield them.
Polearms all the way for me. My most beloved type of melee weapons of all I guess. While first Diablo game didn't have any I enjoyed flails as much as possible, but there were hardly any good ones. But since Diablo II peloarms used to be an all-time favourite weapons just fot the looks of it. Surprisingly, not only for melee characters sometimes, he he he... I really hope polearms will make a glorious return in Diablo III being availible for most classes. For sure a Barbarian will be able to wield it, and so might be able a Monk, but I also hope to have an ability to give some bad-*** scythe to a Wizard or Witch Doctor at some point. I also did vote for the "Distance Weapons" as throwing weapons is an ineteresting and rarely used concept. Often inferior to other weapons, they are more interesting to use.

It is told that Buddha, going out to look on life, was greatly daunted by death. "They all eat one another!" he cried, and called it evil. This process I examined, changed the verb, said, "They all feed one another." and called it good.
Polearms are turning out to be more popular than I expected. I do like how they look on Necros (Scythes), and Zons. Shame come endgame in D2 their best use was on a mercenary. I hope in D3 each weapon class will have multiple high end items so us Barbs will have a lush endgame arsenal to choose from.

I play Barbarian main, but I love the feeling of running around on nightmare in the cow level beating cows with my giant 2H Hammer. It just feels-so-Barbaric?

Hm I personally like axes the most, I always loved my 2h axe barb in D2 only problem was axes in D2 were never all that great. This whole topic reminds me of the good old days of sword barbs lance barbs ect.

Otherwise, it's either bow or maul.
