I've been trying to recall all the mage clans mentioned in Diablo. So far, besides the Horadrim which is a collective of other mage clans, I've only been able to remember Vizjeri and Taan. But I'm certain either an NPC or maybe even the manual has mentioned more than these ones. Any help would be appreciated.
Well, that could be tough. Short answer, no. Long answer, they are indeed a faction, but before when the mage clans were mentioned, it was eluded to that they were some kind of group collectively. And I don't mean like the Horadrim either. But more like a shabby republic where some were more closely allied than others, some even hostile to one another, but they all recognized each other as legitimate clans. Eventually I'd like to catalogue all known groups or factions in Diablo, but for now I'm trying to focus on just the mage clans. But there simply isn't a lot of information about them.
Cool, thanks Carloseus. I think Zan Essu, Ammuit, Ennead, and Skeld would definitely fit under those categories. I've never even heard of those last three though. The Zan Essu one makes sense now, however.
You can thank my superb searching skills. I can find almost anything long as its on the internet. Some faster than others, but most I find pretty fast.
I have to wonder about some of these names. I'm not getting any information on them. However, the wiki page for Diablo says a lot of entries are currently in the process of being edited so I guess I'll just have to check back later on it.
One reason I'm interested in the mage clans is because I think if Diablo 3 is actually a prequel, then it will heavily feature the various clans in it.
Ya, but I don't think that any one clan has much value. It would probably be involved with gaining faction with one but losing faction with a rival. Either way, I think there will be more on the necromancer or barbarians. Necromancers I think the books set a firm base on, and the barbarians are heavily involved in the protection of the Soulstone. If it were a prequel to Diablo it would probably be based more on Necromancers and the Mage clans, but if it were a sequel it would be more on Barbarians and druids because they are the more northern races and closest to the Soulstone.
Hmm. Well, it's kind of a funny dilemma for me. Cause another reason I wish to learn more about the clans is because I also wish to learn more about the overall infrastructures and governments in Sanctuary. And this may sound like heresy to some, but I would even like a game based in Sanctuary that doesn't revolve entirely around Diablo or the Prime Evils. Cause it's a seemingly big world that this game takes place in. There's got to be some other interesting aspects to Sanctuary than just the High Heavens and the Burning Hells.
But the problem with that is pretty obvious. Since all the evil happening is pretty much a result of the Prime Evils themselves. So it's hard to talk about something else evil going on that isn't somehow related to the Prime Evils. Ya know what I mean?
That's kind of why I'd like to be able to play quests where you're not just fighting the Burning Hells or even the High Heavens assuming your character is evil, but also to be able to be a member of one faction who is at war with another and have such a conflict not to be rooted in the Great Conflict. I guess in a way, what I'm saying is I'd like to experience the world of Sanctuary in a more petty perspective where you're not just trying to save the world from obliteration, but maybe trying to sabotage another clan, guild, or faction. And thus, I'm interested in the different clans (as wel as other factions) and what they believe in. I'm especially interested in any group in Sanctuary (besides the Necromancers) who are in a sense neutral and don't hold any particular alliance with Heaven or Hell.
I would like to learn more about the different kingdoms of Sanctuary and what their relationship is with other kingdoms. I even want to know if there are some states that aren't just monarchies, but perhaps democratic republics.
Most regions in Sanctuary seem largely isolated, however, with the exception of trade. But there's just so much to build on in history and lore with the world of Sanctuary itself and not just the overall Great Conflict. These are things I would love to learn more about.
Id love to see more of the infrastructure and stuff too. and i do think the world of Sanctuary is big enough to have a game that doesnt or barely features the Prime/lesser evils. the Diablo Novels werent centred around the 7 great evils and they were ok, why couldnt a game do the same?

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

Indeed! Consider The Black Road. It involved the powerful demon Kabraxis who was completely independent of the Prime Evils. Or the character Zayl in The Kingdom of Shadow who was investigating the city of Ureh that was supposedly a gateway to the High Heavens but turned out to be something else entirely, yet not something of the Burning Hells either. So in other words, there's just so much that I believe many Diablo fans wish to experience in Sanctuary besides the overall Great Conflict.
lol, that was exactly which book i was referring too (although i never mentioned it specifically, but was thinking about it)

Does each mage clan have its own town/area deep within the jungles of kehjistan? because its not pointed out on the Sanctuary map.
also, after diablo2-lod- what happened to most of the mage clans?

Great base for a MMO Siaynoq. I think you just jinxed all the MMO naysayers out there. But I do see your point and agree with you. There aren't only the Heavens or the Hells that want to control Sanctuary, but other men and independent demons and/or angels. Remember that Izual wanted a Sanctuary away from all the fighting, he was a renegade angel, why wouldn't there be more like him? And as you already pointed out there is much already demonic and evil that plagues Sanctuary that has nothing to do with the Three Prime Evils.
In all, I wouldn't mind at all a MMO for our next Diablo. It would certainly allow alot more interaction with so many aspects of the world of Sanctuary, much like WoW. If they took WoW and slapped a Diablo label on it along with change the places, names, and concept, I would eat it up completely.

Yeah, it doesn't really say much about the clans other than what some believe in or practice. I would assume they are somewhat territorial. Sometimes I also picture them having equal representation in some capital city. Kind of like in Morrowind when you go to the city of Vivec and each major House has its own center but they still pay dues to the main authority of the city.
Unfortunately, there's very little information about the mage clans, but the good news is that it's all up for conjecture and heresay.

Even if it wasn't an MMO, I still think it would be interesting for Diablo to incorporate many of these other aspects as opposed to it being a straightforward hack & slash. But I understand that many Diablo fans feel strongly about it being hack & slash, but I wish there was more to do on Battle.net than just leveling up and trading items.
being a sorcerer and doing jobs for the mage clans, or being a Necromancer and doing tasks in the name of Trang-oul or Rathma.
