I started an assassin, it has become my least favorite character to play. I am only at level 7 or so though. Just seems to take a lot longer for her to level up to me and she doesn't do much damage.

Got lucky again - I guess. Got another diablo clone. I just logged in and and bam. Took me maybe 10 swipes and got pretty much nothing (a rare low maul and 2 more crappy charms). On a funny note, I decided that since I was already nearby I might as well go to trist, were I was killed. lol

Whatever gets me the most damage and the abaility to stay alive while dishing it out.
I still have yet to forge anything, I keep meaning to do it but never get around to actually doing it.
The ES site recommends using lower level items and forging/dstoning/crafting to boost them up to desired levels.
So far for myself though, I am using set items along with uniques. But I have been unable to get any level 70 and up set items (my barb is in the mid 80's and I have a sorc in mid 70's.)

EH.... I have been in an ES drought lately. I keep creating characters that use elemental damage all the time, and that just doesn't work when you reach hell. You can't do any quest without running into immunes. They honestly need to make a low-level runeword/unique that gets conviction aura on when equipped. The other effects can be crappy, just something to easily reduce enemy res' so casters can go through hell without needing perfectly godly items. I mean, how the hell do they expect a sorc to go through it without one of those runewords? The lowest one I foudn requires a purple rune. The highest rune I found was gold in act1 hell.

theres the Gemword Archidimeron, which gives 10 to conviction, but not on equip so you have to have it on. Theres also Inarius' Fall, the uni Zweihander. Then theres the 2 runewords, but they are really unlikely
I found the one runeword - Burn - but not a second one.
Other than the zweihander there is also a holy pendant (Holy Deviant - paly only I think) and ceremonial armor (Izeals Vise).
Two sets, Malek (4 items for conviction or maybe its just the belt) and Griffiths (2 items for conviction).
Site says a desert merc, hell combat can help too, or an offense barb merc.
(I think I picked a defense barb for merc for my sorc - gonna have to check when I get home.)

My Spearzon has served me quite well, and I killed Shenk just before I stopped playing. Not because she couldn't continue, but because I got slightly depressed at not knowing what items to go for. Then came Devil May Cry 4 and after that I just forgot to play
Either way, I used a combination of Jab, Lightning Strike and Shadow Strike. I have yet to encounter a PI/LI/MI monster, and with a maxed Valkyrie to back me up, I don't need massive survivability to manage. Although I can die rather quickly if caught off guard.
I can imagine the Sorceress being tougher to play without a summon and with no Magic and Physical damage. But I hope you're not focusing on one tree, if so you have yourself to blame
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Its a fire sorc - and so all points need to go into fire skills! (With the exception of soul shiver, static field and teleport).
And just to let you know, even with all my points focused on the fire branch - damage still isn't all that great. I know, I could use better gear, but if I go into 2 branches, I'd be screwed.

can i ask what skills you are using? the ones i found that really work when maxed and given synergies are firebolt (yes im serious, triple firebolt, 7k damage, low mana), fissure works pretty good if your willing to run and lay them around. then theres meteor. ive never been a fan of it, couldnt time it

Supposedly Immolation is a real killer is you want to take the chance and run up to mosnters.
I think you need to split your skills, which would mean you need better gear. I don't know what Immunities are unbreakable in ES, but I figure it's probably a few.

But I cxan't get better gear until I get further into Hell, but I can't until I get rid of immunities! AH DAMN ALL THESE CIRCLES OF CRAP THAT EXIST IN MY LIFE. DX
But anyways, I got a kickass assassin being made. All physical damage, and a nice summon to, so I have no need to fear, DamnFastAttack is here! Bwahahahaha

That would appear to be an insurmountable problem then.
The ES Wiki however does say that a Sorc is hard to play in Hell, and I assume you would have to do a lot of D-stoning and forging with an un-twinked one.

You have to go to your start menu and bring up the Easten Sun area, and you should see "Convert Char and Respec". Go there, load your character and, have fun!

I got my third clone the other day. This time he was harder to kill (took more than 10 hits - lol) and I got better drops. Not great, but better than what I was getting. I got an Act II merc set weapon and two low level rare items.
Hopefully this means that the higher level you are the better the drops get and he is more of a challenge to kill.
