Those things actually look really neat! Like some kind of will-o-wisp or something.
They look like eyes to me. Like, some sort of spell that casts out an eye as a scout or something, maybe? I think I read somewhere that there was gonna be a spell like that... I dunno, I can't find a source, I could just be making it up. But it does look like an eyeball, could still be either a spell or a type of enemy.
Edit: Argh, everyone took that out of context. The original poster of that said:

Next, we have something strange! Remember, this was under the monster section!
A will-o'-the-whisp isn't a Warcraft invention, althought they are fairly original in Warcraft. A more recognisable name for them is a Jack o' Lantern.
I am perfectly well aware of that. What I meant was, I think of the Wisp specifically in Warcraft when I see it.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
You know I think that Cain sprite, now that I look at it again, is a identify action. Like when you set identify as your right skill and then use it over and over on the ground all characters do a sort of jerk like that, and it makes sense for Cain to have a identify action.
Lol. Thats funnny. I would have prefered those blue whisps and the skinned Storm caster than the other monsters. lol

Ahh. That does make sense. I can see Blizz applying that to Cain.

Long, long time Diablo fan; short, short time with DiabloFans. USEast D2 Ladder/1.13 Beta: Accnt = ChezPizmo USEast WCIII Ladder: Accnt = TeeheeSprinkles A cool, unrelated video; "Dude Bids 420 on Price is Right" ("420, Bob") "I'm nasty, I'm old and a little bit ornery; I look like Patrick Stewart and sound like Sean Connery." Or ANY sprites for that matter. I'm constantly checking into this thread. lol. Love it.

I wonder if it was sort of the first template for the Siege Beast things in D2 the imps rode on.
That's the first thing that came to mind for me, too. I'd put a safe and comfortable bet on that.

Kind of do, but there are large differences. I play Eastern Sun and they put the Horned Beasts from Diablo 1 in it, so I can see them right next to each other. But I can defiantly see how you got that o.o
Has anyone noticed that these beasties resemble the Horned Demons from Diablo I? I can bet that those are actually the same!
They do look somewhat similar, but I always thought the ones from D1 looked slightly more humanoid where the D2 ones look more like animals, or even specifically like rhinos.
Plus the ones from D2 aren't nearly as scare as in D1.

So its definitely a monster and not a spell.
Though that does look like what I'd imagine one to look like.
