I have been playing Diablo 2 LOD on and off since it came out way back when. I just moved into my dorm a few weeks ago and I was able to play via the free wifi on campus, it was great.. until about 5 days ago...
One person in my 6 story dorm also plays Diablo 2 (since we are in the same dorm, we share the same wifi router and therefore share the same IP Address) and they were using a bot and got the entire dorms IP Address temporarily banned. Im not pleased that blizzard places the temporary restriction on the entire IP Address. Now anybody in my dorm that wants to play on USEast wont be able to for the next few weeks because one person decided to use a bot (I also cannot log on to WarCraft 3 on USEast). I sent an e-mail to blizzard technical support, but they said there was really anything they could do for me. I would just switch to USWest but Id lose all of characters This is certainly not a very pleasant situation for me, and there seems to be nothing I can do about it.
I think blizzard should try and come up with a better system for dealing with bots and spammers, something other than banning the entire IP address which has negative consequences innocent bystanders like myself.
The way there system works for bnet was developed probably more then 10 years ago so I dont think we will have to many worries about this kinda crap happening with bnet 2.0
O.o that is true. BNet hasnt really aged too gracefully in some aspects. Hopefully whoever was using the bot has learned their lesson and will try not to get the entire dorm banned again lol.
Using the same Wifi gives two computers the same IP address?
When using a router...the ISP gives one IP address for that router...that router than creates sub IP addresses or sometimes referred to sub net IP addresses. Food for thought

Those before me shall quiver in my wake as I unleash the fury within!
I just went ahead and started an assassin on USWest to kill the time until the temporary restriction is lifted, and hopefully the person using the bot learns his lesson and doesnt use it (or avoids get caught) again.
Yea, this system is highly flawed and hopefully it is something they address in 1.13 because it hurts legit players more than the ones they are trying to punish unfortunately...but I highly doubt it will change...

~ Some people are still alive only because it is illegal to kill them ~
Blizz Tech Support sent me a response to my e-mail in which I asked why my IP had been banned, and the tech guy confirmed that my IP had a restriction on it and that he doesnt have to ability to view the cause, but that it will be at most 2 weeks. At least they responded in a reasonable amount of time (like 2 days or so).
And the restriciton is probably almost up since its been over a week already

OR if they insist on botting then try your best to show them how to bot and not get caught
