i completey have no idea what ur talking about. i havent played in a while, so im losing out on the D2 lingo :(.... can someone plz explain MF and stuff?
btw, that alienware laptop is lame. way to expensive for getting crapware.
Basically, if you want to go all out, just get as much as you want. In reality, you can find good items at around 150 MF. I, however, have almost 500. Why? Well, it's rather hard to explain if you don't know what exponential growth is.
In essence, Magic Find splits up in to a couple of categories in relation to what it affects drop-wise: Set Items, Magic Items, Rare Items, and Unique Items. It does not affect rune drops or regular item drops besides decreasing their chance of dropping based on logic (as in, if you have more of a chance of finding a bunch of magic items, odds are that you will find a magic item over a rune). If you didn't get that last sentence, don't worry about it if all you're doing is MFing for Uniques/Sets and so forth.
Anyway, time to elaborate on MF theory:
You will notice that MF does not increase the rate to find all items at the same percentage. In other words, MF will never hurt your chances to find a unique*, but your chances of finding a unique, while always increasing, will reach a point of diminishing return, meaning that your amount of magic find your gaining by sacrificing your ability to survive and/or kill boss and/or monsters might not be worth it for what little increase you're obtaining.
* It is arguable that, when you reach the point of diminishing return, since your chances of finding a magic item increase far greater than your chance of finding and set or unique item, you have more of a chance of obtaining a magic item than a set or unique item.
200-400 mf is fine....dont sacrifice to much killing power for mf ever. dont just MF the big bosses even tho they do give sick drops killing msass amount of enemies is also great
Dont listen to ppl telling you that they found sojs or hoz's only when they had over 1k mf cuz thats just there luck even with mf your probably gonna find a pile of shit every run unless ur a lucky bugger.....if anything id say no mf is best just to increase chances of finding stuff like eth vortexs that you can glitch for exiles that are worth far more then most uniques. Same goes for magical and rare drops in many acses a good one of those is worth many times more then any unique
You want to find the exact MF % before you start getting screwed. While all % are increasing, the % for Magic items increases much much more than Unique items %, so be sure to find the amount suitable.
(as in, if you have more of a chance of finding a bunch of magic items, odds are that you will find a magic item over a rune).
No disrespect, but this is wrong... It does decrease the regular (white) item drop due to what you said, but it doesn't decrease the rune drop. The game first decides which kind of item is going to drop: "wearables"(armor, weapons, etc), runes, pots, gems or gold. Magic Find has nothing to do here. Then, only if a "wearable" drops does the Magic Find applies.
It is arguable that, when you reach the point of diminishing return, since your chances of finding a magic item increase far greater than your chance of finding and set or unique item, you have more of a chance of obtaining a magic item than a set or unique item.
This is wrong too. I mean, you will always have more chances of finding magic items than uniques, but having huge amounts of magic (blue items) find, does not decrease your chances of finding a unique. Once a "wearable" has dropped, FIRST the game decides if it's a unique (this is where the "unique find" applies). ONLY IF IT IS NOT (most of the time) does the game decides if it's a set item, then a rare item, then a magical item, or if it's just a normal item (including white, superior, low quality, ethereal and socketed items).
I think charms act as wearables, but I'm not sure. Also, if the game decides that an item that can't be unique, is unique (for example javelins, there are no unique javelins (I mean the normal javelins, not the elite ones)) the game will drop a rare item with a lot more durability. This also applies for set items. If the set item doesn't exist, the game will drop a magical item with more durability.
That's it for today, next class is tomorrow, same time, same place :P. If you have any more questions just ask
How sure are you that it FIRST decides it's a unique, THEN if not, if it's a Set, Rare, or Magic? If so, at frikkin' 200, you're more likely to get a Rare/Set/Unique than a Magic..doesn't really add up.

Listen to this guy, knows wut hes talkin about and also brings up somethign people ALWAYS seem to mess up when talking about mfing. Just because you have mf does not mean a coa is going to drop...a corona has to drop before you ever get it to be a unique and be a coa....and mf has no effect on if a corona ever is going to dtop for u....but i STILL hear ppl insisting it does..
seriously tho...how can people who are still playing diablo NOT know how mf works by now? many many MANY people and sites have figured it all out LONG ago...

Pretty sure hes right....at least from what I recall on how it all works...really tho if you wanna find out that bad its not hard to find out
i had 600 odd mf on my hammerdin and didnt find jack shit. SERIOUSLY mfing is a waste of time unless you bot which is illegal and so i never did it (also i was afraid of getting my account banned :\) anyways simply trading is far superior for getting good items.
lol Num3n maybe you are just unlucky... my hdin currently has about 300%mf in 1.12, he finds all kinds of goodies...:D
My old Hdin had about 400%, I mf'ed a Perf Hoz, P l Facet, P Nightwings, P fathom.... the list goes on.
I really don't think it matters where you go to MF. sure some spots have tougher mosters which always drop good amounts of gold and items ( Trav, Fridgid) but I found the perf Hoz in normal tristy in a solo game... it's all just random luck and patience.

You cant find a hoz in norm trist lolim pretty sure its impossible given the area level
also an items stats arent effected by your mf....only if its unique, set, magical, rare

I'm never that interested in anything really..except pretty useful things in life. I'll leave my MF knowledge at that.
Then why bother posting in a thread about it and discuessing it?
Yeah, you aren't really on the bright side of the moon, so to speak. I'll just hold my peace and wait for these magnificent posts to get deleted on sight.

I call bullshit. Normal Tristram you say?
It is my understanding that certain items can only drop in higher level areas of the game.
Which is why you don't see Zakarum or Gilded shields dropping in normal at all. You see plenty of kite shields, heraldic shields, light gauntlets and low level stuff in normal difficulty.
What you don't see are the Ogre gauntlets and Archon plates and such. Total bullcrap.
If you mean hell tristram I might be a believer. I found a perfect BK ring in trist also found a nice eth dusk shroud there.
On topic: Around 350-400% magic find is all I have ever needed to get good drops. A lot of luck comes into play. I have had days that I find 3-4 godly uniques in a few hours and other times I go weeks without a decent item dropping. The trick is kill kill kill. When you get tired of that kill kill kill some more. Eventually something is bound to drop. Patience and persistence is a must.

When I say normal I mean (not uber trist) on Hell Difficulty... and yes I did find a P Hoz there

I was pretty shocked when I iD'd it and it was 200%ed. Possible that was one of my top 5 best finds ever.
