It has been so many years now since Diablo 2 first hit the shelves. I was just recently playing again and it seems like tons of people are still playing. I know everyone is eagerly waiting for a Diablo 3 should it ever come into being. Until then, some friends and I thought that maybe Blizzard should do another expansion for D2. I am probably not the first to suggest this, or even post my ideas as to what it could be, however I'm gonna jot it down in short here and see what people think. And so...
Diablo 2 – Gates of Heaven
After the destruction of the Worldstone the boundaries between the mortal realm and the planes, have been forever changed. With the 3 prime evils defeated and the forces of hell halted, a civil war erupts in the heavens and a usurper, takes control of the “Council of Seven”. Because of his interferance in the war against the Prime Evils, Tyrael is brought to trial, stripped of his devine power and exiled to the mortal world. The Creator is mysteriously silent during this upheaval and has made no move to stop this rebellion. Now it is up to the Champions of Light to decide the fate of Heaven itself.
Features:
New Player Class – Horadric Scholar Character Re-incarnation – Restart at level 1 and retain all learned skills. More Cube Recipes – Make custom claws, energy swords and combine gems to make potent jewels. More Set Items – Find companion sets or create your OWN set items. Expanded Socketing – Now put gems, jewels or runes into Boots, Gloves, Belts, Rings and Amulets. New Environments – Fight through the lightning streaked firmament to the very seat of Heaven. 2 Possible Endings – Redeem Tyrael and restore the Balance or claim Heaven’s Throne yourself. New Hirelings – Choose either an Angel or Demon to fight along side you.
I do have "in detail" descriptions for these new additions, but I'm kinda throwing this out there to see if this idea would appeal to old and hardcore D2 fans alike. Also I hope, if well received, that someone could get this slid across a desk at Blizzard.
The plot is interesting but it wouldn't work as a D2 expansion. For a new game to make it big these days, it has to be unique and have top-of-the-line graphics. If they're going to spend all that time upgrading D2's graphics, they might as well just make a new game - Diablo 3.

Even the earliest brainstorms for games are well over 100 pages long. So Blizzard couldn't do anything with a paragraph of plot and less than a dozen "in detail" features. It's a nice idea but don't expect anything to be done about it, instead why don't you expand on it a little more and write a whole fanfic just for fun reading.
And also, I don't think angels and demons should be hired as mercenaries. Mercenaries shouldn't be stronger than the human character.
The premise is NOT to take out God, but to fight the corrupted angels.
Considering this is a ficticious world, I think that if you can fight demons, why not fight angels also? The absence of the Creator is to test where this revolution will go and see who comes out on top. A culling of the herd, so to speak.
Also I left the description short because I wanted to see if the basic premise was a good idea. Ie a few more levels and the completion of Tyrael's story. It seems to me that there will have to be reprocussions after the worldstone's destruction. A revolt in Heaven was my take on it.
I don't want new graphics for the game.
As BNET shows, people love this game as it is, I'm just asking for a little more.
But I suppose my question is answered with 2 negative vote so far.
The whole idea of releasing a new expansion for a 7 year old game will never work. Blizzard no longer has the original crew hired, since Blizzard North was disbanded, and all employees from there that were relocated are either working on WoW, SC2 or the third project at this time, and thus would have no time to develop a third game.
It's also hopelessly outdated. While over 10 million people bought t, far from that number are still playing. Battle.net in total lies consistently around 300.000, or something similar. A third of that is Warcraft 3. Developing a new expansion for a player base that is at most 200.000 will never net a profit in these days. Take into account that you cannot release an expansion like this at standard price, given it's old graphics and general structure.
However, all of these things could be used in a D3. Except for the part about God. So far there's been no mention of a supreme being ruling over the angels, either in the books or in the games, and I don't think there is one. At least not one who sides with the forces of Order and Chaos.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I can see my idea has been unanimously frowned upon. I can agree with PhrozenDragon’s comments about the old graphics and the disbanded team thing. To answer one last query regarding the Horadric Scholar. Deckard Cain said that he is the last of the horadrim and Tyrael confirmed this in the Pandemonium Fortress. I was going on the continuation after the worldstone’s destruction. My intent was to have a new horadic scholar come into play because Deckard was going to disappear. It was my intent to have it revealed that Cain is the avatar of the creator, and thus can watch events unfold incognito. And so, in the end game when you help overthrow the usurper angel your character becomes a member of the council of seven and thus an angelic being game ends. The scholar ending is that he goes back out into the world to recreate the horadric order. In either case once Tyrael is restored you are given the option to be re-incarnated, that is start at level 1, but you retain all your skills. This gives you the opportunity to play through again and get all the quests again to finish out your characters skill trees. The reason I haven’t done the fan fiction thing is that, well... I’m not a good writer. I can think up concepts, but building a story has never been easy for me. Suffice to say, it looks like this idea dies with me. Thanks for the input.

Horadric Scholars wouldn't work as Deckard Cain was the last horadrim.
