This is my first ever Thread, and I have decided to discuss about something that could potentially reduce trolling or unnecessary threads. I have already searched for similar threads but have found none, so damn me if another similar thread exists.
Anyways, I think the Mods should put the rank system into better use. Instead of aquiring new ranks by posting more, the Mods should only promote Users who have offered meaningful contributions to this websites. I admit that this idea is very common and not my own idea, but I think this will greatly reduce the meaningless threads posted all the time as well as troll threads.
When it comes to meaningful contributions, I think the Mods should look at the past posts of Users who have posted X number of times and see how useful their contribution is. I agree that mods will have a lot more things to do if this new idea comes through, and that not every good contributing member will receive a promotion because mods may miss it, but at least this will reduce troll threads aimed at flaming and not discussing at all.
Of course, as the ranks get higher, the highest ranked users should probably have the capability of erasing any troll posts in their own created thread or even have the ability to promote other users (although this would lead to biased decisions).
Once again Damn me if a similar thread has been created. I will add a signature that says 'Dumbass who can't use the search tool" for a few months if a similar thread has already been created :P.

This is a good idea....HOWEVER...and I mean a big HOWEVER....there are so many users loggin in everyday and new members joining everyday, it is nearly impossible to keep up with every single person and contributions that they have made to the community. Granted you are trying to find a better way to reduce spam and meaningless threads, but there is no way us mods/admins will be able to keep up with the work flow that everyday users commit. Kudos on the idea though, but would only be effective in smaller communities.

Aye, there are indeed a lot of users. But how about also putting the reputation into good use? If a certain user passes a certain reputation, he is allowed to create his own threads. That should make it less annoying for you mods out there.
Also, users should only be allowed to add 1 reputation point to each user. This should also reduce the spam reputation point. Also, if possible, you can keep track of which post the users made that deserved reputation points, as well as add a pop up box so that users must give a reason before giving reputation points.
Perhaps a user would require X number of posts and X number of reputation points before they can create their own threads? If the mods give a heads up notice to the users out there that reputation has been put to good use, I'm sure it WILL be put to good use by the users.
Reputation would not be a good idea either. Say you make a very good well thought out post, lets say about Communisim. Then this close minded fool comes along and sees "Communism" and just because of the word "Communism" gives you negative reputation. Is that fair to you? Of course not.
Still, glad that someone is at least trying to think of ways to help.
(I'd still like to see specific things banned from threads. Example: If "Graphics" is in a thread or opening post, it should be auto-deleted.)
That would first require several changes to the coding I believe, since reputation currently serves no purpose, and has no bearing directly on the site, or it's members.
That being said, it has an indirect bearing on the sites users. It's original, and often theorized only purpose, was to provide a scale of sorts to allow users to better gauge another user's believability or credibility. In theory, the higher the reputation of the person, the more likely said person speaks the truth in what he or she says.
Currently, I believe you can only give out 1 point per person, at least until you give out reputation points to 50 others first. At which point you can then give reputation points to the first person again. You cannot give more that one point to any one user in rapid concession, not even if it is a different post in a different thread in a different sub forum of a different forum.
There is a text box for you to give a message for why you gave the reputation point, but it is not a requirement to fill it out. At least not currently. Unfortunately currently it is impossible to see other's reputation comments if indeed any were given. You can view your own. If you go to your USER CP you will see how many if any, posts of your's received any reputation points. you can also see your total points there too. Or an alternative way to view your own points total is to attempt to give your own post a reputation point. I myself am sitting quite comfortably on 65 points.
Again, as for a user's ability to make threads, polls or even posts, that would first require changes in the code. Of which I am sad to say is not my forte or specialty. awhile this may seem a contradiction to my rank of administration (as denoted by my username appearing in red) I work in a more well administration capacity, paper trails so to speak. Or rather e-paper trails.
And LinkX raises a good point, reputation points also have a negative bearing if you speak of something people have a disliking too or of, they can give you a negative reputation point. It is theoretically possible to receive enough points to end up with a 0 rating. I believe 10 is the base amount. So it the level was set to say 20 some users would lose the ability to make threads. Now in some cases this may seem like a good thing, however, some people who do not spam these forums, but argue with all reason, fact and logic, how inheritably flawed something is, to which others take offense at and would give negative points to them for, would soon find themselves unable to post. While often when making a glorious eggdish of goodness, some eggs must be broken, it is generally a scenario most would wish to avoid.

Actually I was not looking at a negative reputaton points. Just reputation points :P. Like what Elfen said, if possible, reaching a set amount of reputation points would allow you to create threads. Sure there are people out there whose gonna create 10 accounts just to give themselves some reps. But this would at least reduce the troll/flame threads out there, and banning/locking threads should be a lot easier as well.
As for examples of banned users/threads. Well.... there is more than enough out there. Everything you see in D3 section now has at least 5-6 repeated threads. And inside all these threads... well just more flaming on duplicate threads, stupid statements etc.
Which is also why rep points could come to good use. Like what Elfen said, its your credibility. So only those who have enough rep points can create threads, because they're credible.

I actually spoke of a dislike for that idea. Also such an idea requires changes in the code, which as I mentioned earlier, it is not within my power to do so.

It is impossible to give points to yourself. Unless you are speaking of some sort of "forum gold" concept wherein "gold" or points are awarded to members for making threads and replying to threads.

I think he ment more along the lines of something like me making an account called LinkY and LinkZ to give LinkX reputation. Of course then you check the IP accounts and see if they match, if they do, ban for multi-accounting, if they don't, someone's got fans...

Well I meant users creating another account, to give his original account a rep point. Then opening another account, then giving the original account a rep point.
Not entirely. Your idea is at best in the early stages of development. If one aspect of an idea does not work, perhaps another will.

;332232'']This entails too much work for the admins to track every user, and what if the new users don't get recognized?
Ehh, since you bumped this, might as well bump it again (someone might drop in a good idea or two). The whole point is not to have new users recognized early..... Most of the pointless/duplicate/troll threads are by users with less than 50 posts. So if you want to be recognized, post smart, post mature and contribute.
I have seen a few forums with this type of setting, but like you said it does require a lot of work from the mods. So basically, what elfen lied said.
Lat me be first to point out that it would take the forum staff very little work to implement this procedure - in fact, I believe we discussed as a possible way to dissuade bots. However, we also found some problems with it (hence why we did not use it). I don't really have time right now to get into the issues, but most of them are things like new members not being able to post threads in the Introduction Forum.
I am going to bring this proposal to the moderator board for further discussion on implementing it and dealing with some other early-user issues.
Kudos on the good idea.
