Yes, the ring needs to be fixed. No, it does not need to be fixed your way. What I am saying is, the alternative proposal of simultaneously removing the affix and reducing set bonus requirement across the board that you argued against is a much superior fix. You won't have backlash, and you fix the ring at the same time.
And 3% of the players not buying the next expansion is still a couple of millions of dollars.
Except that it's not that effective a fix. It essentially contracts sets further baseline and gives them more power baseline. Sure it might compensate for backlash, but it'll also retain the current rut of "wear multiple sets or gtfo" that RoRG is already perpetuating.
There are multiple issues at play here. Not just RoRG is BiS, it's BiS because you need to stack set bonuses and unique affixes, because it has no competition, because sets with reduced requirements actively push out other itemization options.
Reduce set bonus requirements? You'll have to nerf them. Otherwise they'll just keep pushing other legendary gear options out of slot without a second thought.
And that'll cause more backlash than just cutting RoRG will.
I see your point on this, and despite that, I still argue that removing the RoRG and reducing the set requirement at the same time is still a superior fix. Generally, retroactively nerfing people hard is a very bad decision. Your alternative only works at the start of a new season, where they can stop RoRG from dropping in seasons, but continue to drop in non-seasons.

Never said they should do it mid season. Just that they should gut it and if the affix is so important put it somehere there's some actual competition for slot use.
Though I'd argue against leaving a "legacy" RoRG in. That shit breaks permanent characters, PoE's done a good job of showing how bad that goes.
