Well then. Time to throw Bane of the trapped (20% dmg under CC / 30% slow), Teardrop (smite) and Wreath (conduit) on followers. Assuming the procs are inheriting our stats like they do with thunderfury etc, ofc.
Just bear in mind that, unless they change/fix it, you can't upgrade gems socketed in items worn by your merc. So you'll have to go through some irritating gear juggling if you want to rank up those gems.

Getting 3x main gems to level 50 will take awhile to start with, though. At that point you'll probably have multiple versions of the 3x good gems for followers, and can simply keep an unlevelled one in the gear while you level another one up for later use. Sure, it won't be immediate gradual rewards, but probably better than having to TP to town every time you want to upgrade a gem/not having one in at all.
Well, I generally don't rely on my follower for damage, so I'd probably rely on giving them utility gems.
I'm thinking rank 50 Bane of the Trapped for the 30% movespeed reduction aura, rank 50 Gem of Efficacious Toxin for increased damage against poisoned targets from all sources and rank 50 Zei's Stone of Vengence for % chance to stun for extra crowd control.
Perhaps I'm wrong at dismissing my follower's damage though. If they can dish out some solid numbers with legendary gems, that might be a thing.

On the topic of legendary gems, I was wondering if the smite gem is capable of procing with armor of the kind regent, to provide 2 smites instead of 1. Similarly, I was wondering if smite gem can benefit from smite runes, and/or +%smite gears. Well aware that this would be OP, this is one reason for bringing it up. Having powerful items in game is great, having well and truly OP items in game is not.

I was under the impression that once you had a legendary gem, the same one would not drop again for your account? Did I misread that?
A blue post went up around 8 hours ago concerning leg gem changes. These changes will affect the potency of all leg gems, and will also restrict the use of leg gems to player gears (followers will not benefit).

Blizz hinted that if followers need buffs at a later time, they may use follower-specific leg gems in order to solve this issue.
