I may disagree with itemization. Well, I may be bias but on Crusader, with specific gear you want block rate instead of ASPD or even CMD sometimes.
It all depends on gear you have. But yes, most of the times still trifecta items are the only one to go with.
To be fair, on higher torment levels, if you optimise everything for trifecta and "best" output stats, you end up being far too squishy to survive anything. Need to find the correct balance, so you have to sacrifice damage somewhere. Usually attack speed is the first to go as it's got no real impact on your actual output unless you can stand still and free-cast (example - necks with Crit+Cridmg+mainstat+elemental dmg > crit+critdmg+mainstat+IAS). If you don't sacrifice some of the dps stats, the only items you'll end up with that has vitality as one of the 4 "best" stats it can roll is...
Shoulders, Chest, Bracers, Legs and Boots. It's just not enough to survive high torments (without unity cheese, anyway =P).
If the part about there being a 'loot table'/system that assigns a handful of items per slot when you make a game is true (which Flux says it is on the link), then that's kind of BS, since you could play for hours in a game that has zero chance of dropping what you want and no way of knowing all your time is being 'wasted.'
The abysmally low drop rates for certain things isn't too surprising since they've told us they were doing that, but I suppose it can be disheartening if you want Item X and see it has less than a 2% chance to drop, and that's if all the other RNG rolls line up. (a Wand of Woh might have to pass % chance for legendary to drop, % for Smart Loot to activate, % for a 1h weapon, % for a wand, then finally roll against the 1.52% chance for the Wand of Woh vs. any other legendary wand, and that's if it's even 'allowed' to drop in the game if that pre-set loot system is real)
That's just not true. You can easily break into T5-6 with gear that you have crafted (Cains, Aughilds, Borns, Asheara's), along with some quite easily aquired items as a wizard.
I think this REALLY needs to be emphasized. On one hand there is a legitimate complaint about too much RNG. But on the other, you can directly farm the Ring of Royal Grandeur, and the above sets and be facerolling T3/T4 because of the set bonuses. Although there is RNG to the rolls of the items and drops of the materials, there is no RNG in terms of direction. We know precisely where the mats for those things drop, and where RoRG drops, its as targeted as D2 was, where you KNEW certain thing could only drop from Baal. So you can farm the above sets with relative ease, and have a fairly good geared character ready to go, regardless of any other legendary drops.
The first roll is if an item drops at all. I dont know droprates for white mobs, but they feel very low. The second roll is for item class, so for any given item there is 26 possibilities. So if you are looking for any specific item it is 1/26. The next roll is for item quality, lets just say that legendaries have a 1% droprate (probably much lower than this as you don't see a legendary after 100 rare items). Now that it rolled legendary it does a roll for which one it is, lets say you are looking for a winters flurry, that is a 2% drop chance.
That is a roughly .00076% chance that any given drop will be a winters flurry. And this is a HIGH end estimate because I am fairly certain the legendary drop rate is nowhere near 1%, we would be lucky if it is 1/10th of that.
For funsies, lets assume it is .1% and compare that with rune drops in D2. The drop chance for winters flurry would be .000076%. The drop chance for a Lo rune in D2 in hell cows is .000069%. Now for the interesting thing: The D2 drop rate is for any given kill while the D3 one isnt. The odds are much higher that you will get a Lo rune in D2 hell cows than you will get a Winters flurry in D3. How many Lo runes did you ever see in cows in D2?
I'm not really sure what people are upset about? We've known since before release that legendaries are weighted - you're going to see certain ones much more often then the more powerful ones.
It's too bad that whoever leaked this couldn't get their hands on the drop chance off of trash mobs / champ packs / bosses / chests.

The thing is, this is basic knowledge any "Diablo fan" has. This was how it was in Diablo and Diablo 2, and it is normal for the developers to use the same system that worked perfectly in the previous games.

For me it just highlights how incredibly badly this game needs trading. I mean, there are people out there salvaging class set items and shard of hates and thunderfury's... while plenty of people would be more than happy to trade for those. I mean some of these drop chances are approaching cham/zod level rune drops and that is disgustingly wrong

And any "diablo fan" knows how absurdly rare it was to get a Lo rune from hell cows, and that that drop rate is actually better than getting a winters flurry is absurd. D2 had trading, D3 doesnt.
Bnet is being inundated with flailing histrionics over this, as if Blizzard has been caught ripping us off. Myself and many others could've told people (and have) that they use a formula like this. The tables seem very well tuned to me, well in lockstep with what we had playing D2. Curiously, the rates are far more fair in D3.
I suppose the primary issue is BoA. I get along with BoA just fine, but I'm also objective and reasonable enough to understand why many folks feel burdened by BoA. At this juncture I would call it prudent for Blizz to introduce at least some form of viable free trade.

We kinda live in that culture. You know where news stories aren't fact-checked until AFTER they air because getting viewers is more important than anything else.
Who cares that everyone already knew they were doing this? I actually think Josh mentioned it as far back as Gamescom. That's not interesting. But twisting it so that it sounds like Blizzard is forcibly sodomizing your grandmother in the games room at the senior center.... now THAT is interesting! Even though it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Having detailed numbers of how rare some items are makes it more painful. I mean come on, we all had the thought "the government is probably spying on us" somewhere in our minds, but when Snowden revealed that they really WERE spying on us we all became infuriated. What REALLY changed from before it was revealed? Nothing.

This post basically sums it up, yeah. Anyone that has been paying attention pretty much already knew that item drops worked this way. But when presented in such a way that Blizzard is in some way doing something wrong or that this is some kind of conspiracy theory worthy event, people freak out. Couple that with rose tinted glasses that give the illusion that everything in D2 loot land was wonderful (It wasn't, in a lot of ways it was actually worse.) and it appears to be a big deal when it's not. This is standard practice in this genre.
I'm with you on BoA. It doesn't bother me, but I can see why it bothers some and I honestly wouldn't mind if they'd ease up the BoA restrictions a bit. There are certain items that I'd gladly trade for.

Ahhh...you speak of the 'victim' culture. Life is always more fulfilling when you operate under the pretense that everyone is out to get you with nefarious plans.
More toward the principle bitch that's being thrown around by those whom want end-game sets/legs to be common place;
"I want to use certain builds but I can't until I get lucky and find certain items".
BULL. SHIT.
We can use any build on the books. Any build. With effectiveness, mind you. Not one item I can think of opens the door to builds that were otherwise off-limits. "Build Changing" is a misnomer statement. "Build Amplifying" is the appropriate context.

There are builds which require a select few items to be effective at all. ex: The lazymans torment 1 wizard. Requires razor strop, moonlight ward and some kind of AoE weapon (thunderfury or mad monarch).
There are also items which bump a build up from being below what your current build is to above it. I started out as a frost wizard, so I lack fire gear. However, the instant I get cindercoat I can switch to being an effective fire wizard.

I think you're confusing "effective" with "over-powered".

No, I am not. I am using "effective" to mean that it will be an improvement over my current build. If I switch to being fire right now, it won't be as effective as my frost because I have frost items. It will be, quite literally using the definition of the term effective, "effective". It will have produced the intended result of being a step up from where I am right now.

But you can switch ele damage via the mystic.
Not sure what the problem is?
Pretty sure most people already switched some other stat like life regen to crit dmg/chance so you can not switch the ele damage.
