Haven't really sat down to analyze, but this looks better than the current system, where you need two socketed weapons (if class allows) or feel useless.
I actually like your ideas for weapons having instead an elemental boost to them. Emeralds are in my opinion mandatory and far out-perform anything else in regards to dps. Your offhand ideas are also really cool. Though I think that for two handed weapons it should be that the weapon and offhand perks be combined and maybe boosted a little too. Other wise two handers will be even less viable then they are now (for certain classes).

Honestly better than current design. I think it's sad that they didn't address one of the big core issues with itemization. They should have completely changed Emmy's . As it stands Emeralds are completely dominant when weapon sockets come to mind, just as Ammy's run the Helm department, in end game, although the argue could be made for Rubies here too at least pre-70, less so post-70. The only one with competitive gems is armor. You can arguably use any of the 3 pertinent to your class. Need damage, throw in a Ruby,Top, or Emmy. Need some toughness, throw in a Dime, or Ammy. Your idea would vastly improve the gem system, and give a choice to players. Not just a simple oh its a weapon I NEED A SOCK, and it NEEDS TO HAVE AN EMMY.

It would be interesting if combinations of different gems in items with more than one socket created different affixes as well. This topic definitely needs A LOT of thought put into it. Currently when I compare gems, it's always an obvious decision what to pick because everything else just... ermm... sucks?
I love your idea. This needs as many views as possible and you should take it to the official forums as well. There needs to be diversity in your gem choices. The current system is so damn broken. This would add so much to everyone's play style. Want a fire barb the go for rubies. Want a poison build then go for emeralds. This is an amazing concept. You did very well.
