Ummm is it just me or the amount of gold earned in adventure mode on torment 1 is rather low. Just kind of seems like anyone that is fresh to the game now or went into RoS with like sub 100mil will be kind of screwed after a while on rerolling items and making gems. seeing as the highest level gem can cost up to ~23m to craft up. am i just missing something really obvious here or is gold farming close to impossible on low torment, or even lower for some people that have terrible luck with gear drops, i have some people still farming master after having been 70 for a good while because T1 is very inefficient to kill elites for them.
Yes, gold income is rather low compared to the costs. Right now. Blizzard will definitely revisit this at a later point, I guess we all have to suffer from the fact that they want to drain some of the billions of gold out of the system that some players stockpiled.
The highest gem costs 9.8 million, by the way, going from Marquise; not 23m. Even less if you have Imperial gems.
I feel like the drop rate of gold is up since the most recent patch. But I think once the gold from the AH is gone, no one will really ever have that much gold again unless they never craft. Maybe when everyone is poor that will level the playing field for crafting. If it was lower now some people would be able to infinitely reroll everything.
Thanks for the info on the cost Bagstone, bad math from a friend i guess -.-
but the gold in the system from what players stockpiled shouldnt affect the gold generation in the game since gold has basically zero use for anyone besides the actual player earning it. i feel like if i got a friend to buy the game and start fresh, they would be kinda fucked. this i think would also present problems in ladder play as well. which obviously has time to change since ladders arent coming out anytime soon(tm). but im personally down to about 25m and i feel like it could be dropping really fast if i let it. im holding back on rerolling some pieces to try for better, and certainly not crafting gems up right now.
They didn't design the game for gold to be meaningless. A fresh player isn't supposed to be able to reroll affixes indefinitely or upgrade their gems instantly. You play, get some gold and materials, and decide if you should upgrade a gem or try to reroll an almost perfect legendary. If you stockpiled gold before the AH was disabled, then it's a luxury to be able to do this. It's not broken for those who don't have a lot of gold.
The costs aren't designed to drain billions from someone's wallet. It's designed for gradual progression.

Some of the gold cost were, especially the exponentially increasing crafting cost. This was confirmed by Don Vu in the playtest session. And in between the lines you could also get that it's similar for the 9.8m per Flawless Royal gem, I'm sure it will be lowered in a few weeks/months.
I was thinking about this as well. I'm not saying we should be able to just buy whatever we want whenever we want it, but I haven't been able to earn much gold at all since RoS went live. I have about 13m from selling stuff pre RoS (gems and all that) and I haven't really grown much. I've mostly spent gold on repairs, the odd transmog and upgrading the Crafters. And I've played mostly on Master/T1. If I spend my current gold f.ex. on upgrading a gem to max level, I doubt I'll ever be able to get it anywhere over 1m again without a very long farm. With gold costs as they are, I reckon they'll have to lower them at some point, or it's simply not manageable for anyone who doesn't spend at least a good couple hours a day farming.
The only logical explanation I, too, could come up with was that Blizzard wants to drain the bloated AH economy somewhat. I'm fairly confident they'll have a look at it in the future, as this isn't the first time I've heard people wonder. I just hope they don't wait too long with a revision.
I definitely feel for the new people coming in. I've already spent about 150mil the last two days just on crafting gems, and some on enchanting but the vast majority on gems. I went in with over 1b but the rate im going at isnt good.

That's a total straw man. The OP never said that "A fresh player isn't supposed to be able to reroll affixes indefinitely or upgrade their gems instantly", he is saying that the cost is prohibitive and, for a new player, it would take an _extremely_ long time to do much of anything. When you're talking about 9m gold to make one gem and bounties that reward ~15k gold that means I have to complete 600 bounties - gold drops to make _one_ gem. That's pretty insane.
I have ~39m from d3v saved up and I'm not spending a dime of it as I am pretty sure Blizz will be evening things out soon. If they just increase gold rewards then I waited for no reason, but if they decrease prices then I will have done well to wait,

+1
I didn't come in with that much (500mill) but seeing how much gems are costing alone, i'm trying to be very careful with it. I'm sure i can drain it out pretty fast..

Well, hang on, you also need 81 Marquise gems of the same type to make your one Flawless Royal. Now, sure, maybe getting those will take less time than getting 9m gold. But you're not going to see new players twiddling their thumbs with all the gems they need but not enough gold for a long time, either.

True, but the same can't be said for enchanting. I think all in all the price / acquisition rate is very high.

Honestly, I hope it's not lowered. I like that they are at least somewhat difficult to obtain. I have around 60m after vanilla, due to selling gems etc before AH shutdown, but I could never afford to kit out myself with marquise before ROS, now I already have full flawless imperials and I'm just waiting to find plans to upgrade to flawless royals. I'm kind of sad that they removed an aspect of potential long term progression. A little masochistic maybe, but hey, I'm probably going to be playing this game until Diablo 4 so time isn't really a factor......
WOW guys.... Royal flawless gems, re-rolling legendaries, continuous crafting is supposed to be part of the end game fun.... That includes farming up the gold. If you have GG then you shouldn't need to upgrade every two minutes....
I wouldn't mind seeing a SMALL gold buff on bounties like maybe 40-50k per bounty, but that is what the end game is about right now and to keep people playing, and to keep the game interesting there needs to be incentive.
As far as new players go, well they're new players, crafting low level shit isn't bad and loot 2.0 allows people to pretty much jump right in.
At least give it a week....
See, they're preemptively correcting past mistakes. The main problem with, and the reason so many people quit, D3V was that that shit was too easy BECAUSEeverything was readily accessible. I like to have to work for shit otherwise it is not fun and you are just grinding for nothing... At that point what is the point. That is why D2 lasted so long... Get to level 99, grind for perfects, endlessly trying to perfect you PVP arsenal, so on and so fourth... But, the point is you always had something to accomplish, you always had to work hard for it, and it was never handed to you (Until d2jsp became common knowledge to everyone).
I have never defended this game, but for the first time since 5 hours after it launched I am HAVING FUN, because there is a feeling of something to accomplish. They are on the correct path to keeping the game fun, I'm sure that people will come to appreciate it.
Haven't seen anyone mention this, so I'll throw it out there.
If you're really low on gold and desperate to get some (either for Enchanting or Gem tinkering), vendoring Rares can definitely boost your income. With most rares selling for about 5k~, and you getting an entire inventory (22-25) of those a couple times in a run, you're looking at 200-300k+ gold just from vendoring. Add all the bad rares that you get from Blood Shards (Gambling) and you're looking at probably 600-700k gold on a single farming session.
I've made a conscient effort of saving some gold and seeing how fast I could go back to where I was before spending like crazy to convert all my Topazes. Within a couple hours of "holding myself back" I got most of the gold I spent (5~ mil gold). And then I spent it all on Enchanting again trying to get stats that didn't roll
Yeah, returning (and poor) players will have to choose between some of the options, and limit themselves when Enchanting, Gem-tinkering or Transmogging. But whoever played just a little bit before RoS and saved up some gold as a lot of us suggested, they're probably in an ok spot now.
They must have this, otherwise it's just a huge slap in the face for those people who actually played the game and worked their asses for some of their gold (non RMAH buyers, obviously). Having to spend your money wisely isn't that bad, it actually makes you value that game feature even more than those with "billions".
just like real life, when your young, you dont have money to buy everything you want, you save and save and work hard to get the few things you want...as you get older you get more saved, you can splurge on better things.

It will answer many of your question. I think somewhere around 29 minutes he's talking about gold.
I wiped prolly 100s of times towards the end due to tiredness and lack of caring.
