You see this statement thrown about all the time "it's how I want to play and it doesn't affect you at all". The only problem is...yes it does. This game became a player competition the first time Blizzard added viewable player profiles. Almost everyone looks at them, and yes, you are all comparing your characters to their's. Yes, even without any form of sanctioned competition, the game is full of players vying for the top spot...who has the best gear?...who has the most paragon levels?...who is rocking a full set?.
So yes, how you play does affect everyone else. If the game didn't have the "showing off" factor, it would have been dead in a month or so.
I know stating this won't make people stop trying to use that argument, but is shows how silly it is.
So you "choose" to be competitive in this regard yet you feel "forced" to do things that are unfun because you chose to be competitive in the first place?
Sounds similar to fast food workers who "choose" to work a job at minimum wage yet feel it's unfair and wish to be paid double.

A "Person" is competitive. Your argument loses validity the same way this argument always does. You assume everyone feels and does the exact things you do. Human nature tells us this is wrong. Everyone is different. Everyone has different reasons why, and how they play. To assume that everyone does what you, or what another person does is arrogant presumption. Example, I have NEVER looked at another players profile (negating your mentioned proof). I have had absolutely no reason to.
Please, provide an example of a time where a player affected your game play? And remember, you changing your gameplay because of what someone else does is YOUR choice, therefor they didnt change a thing.
This game is competitive because of player profiles... right. That's your argument? Please. That's a meta-game, not real competition. I don't buy it, my game doesn't effect yours, period. Now, ladders would be a different story...
You can deny it if you want, but your exploits will be taken down one by one because Blizzard knows it's true.
Why do you think all of these people are doing these runs that are getting nerfed? They aren't doing it for fun. Yes, I will outright call anyone a liar who says they are having fun running the same tiny bit of content over and over for hours on end.
They are doing it because they want to be a higher level and have better gear.
Exploits? What on earth are you talking about? Pindleskin runs. Baal runs. I used to farm Mephisto with my Sorc all the time. It's not just Diablo - look at PoE. People farm Piety and maps for gear and exp. That is how these games are played! Effort + time = reward. There is no lazy in that equation.
Op is correct imo. While it's not a direct competition currently, I'm absolutely playing the game and farming for gear that's better than the next person's. That's just the long term nature of the game for me.

ie...they are competing with other players.
I play Diablo 3 to have fun. I take more fun from the actual playing process ("flow") than from the "resulting" rewards. Players like you on the other hand only give a **** about your "score/results", and hence only see 1 viable build for each class - heck, you only even actually see one build and class - the one that some people claim is the "strongest" one. So you basically constrain yourself by so-called build - or "role"- effectiveness (i.e. find the role thats the most effective) and assume that role. As it is a ROLE playing game, choosing and playing a role (again: role=build) should take precedence over effectiveness, i.e. the aim is to pick the most enjoyable role (ignoring numbers) and play it as effectively as possible.

Well, to be honest, you opened those doors first by saying you would call anyone a liar if they said grinding wasn't fun.
Me personally, I did CotA grind once, for like 45 minutes. I got massive amounts of XP but I don't care about efficiency. I like just wandering around, doing quests, progressing through the story at my own pace. I play Diablo to relax myself and not think about real life stuff. If I wanted to be competitive, I would go and play Starcraft.
