So I think I'm not the only one that sometimes wishes that not almost all the loot is smart loot and thus only usable for my currently played character and not for other alts or even followers. To change that I have following idea - if Blizzard were to introduce an option where we can select which kind of smart loot we want that would be maybe a fix for it (has downsides). So you play your wizard, you right click your portrait and there you can select what kind of smart loot you want (loot for barb, crusader, dh, etc) and the coming loot would be smart loot for the selected class (including legendaries - maybe?)
Obvious downside - there isn't much incentive anymore to play alts before you haven't found decent gear for them. But for me that wouldn't be too big an issue.
I like the current system because it gives me another incentive to trade stuff with people in my games. If I'm playing my geared up Barb, odds are that most legendaries aren't an upgrade for me, but may be nice for the alt of someone in my party.
-Ask the Mystic to turn my INT-based rings into STR-rings for the Templar
-Switch on my STR-/DEX-based twinks and buy rings/amulets/weapons from Kadala for Bloodshards -Play with monks, DHs, barbs, crusaders and take their "crap drops" they don't need anymore for your follower (and your twinks)
-Since smart loot only accounts for some percentage of your loot and not a 100%, I had no huge trouble equipping my follower
Despite ranting about smart loot initially myself, I figured gearing up all my followers was actually done faster than gearing up my wiz... and then I realized I never needed a follower because I almost never played solo.
Has anyone ever found something that was not a smart drop, not a class-specific drop but still remotely useful? To me it seems like it's either smart or no main stat at all.
I think you underestimate the power of the followers now. They've had some massive buffs. I personally like to play solo over group unless it's with friends and I've felt the exact same way as the OP. I even put out some rants on the subject as I felt I just couldn't help gear my follower unless they wore the same kind of gear I did. I had suggested that crafters had an option to change the primary stat focus on the UI. A simple option that would favor you or your follower, sadly, that option never got implemented.
I also miss the ability to find a really cool item for an alt. I still see some items for other classes drop from time to time, but it's not quite like finding that unique or set item that only really worked for a sorceress. I can live with it, but I still think it's a bit much sometimes.
Followers are not that bad since Vit is their main stat. Other Stats do help them stay alive longer since the other stats do boost defensive stats. I do not really focus too much on their damage since their most important duty is to stay in the fight.
But only a week to go and RoS will give us much more options with making the loot 2.0 gear work more effectively for our characters and followers.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.

^ this...
It's kinda annoying, and still to this day Iam not a big fan of how much Smart Loot triggers, but it's what we got for now.

Yep. Exactly how I feel.
Can I live with it? Sure. There are some very simple workarounds to it though which wouldn't impact people who don't have alts, people who only play co-op, etc.
As you said, a simple drop-down to change the primary stat on the crafter would be a great idea. Having to switch to your barb to craft str gear for your WDs templar seems.... very incongruous and interrupts gameplay far too much, not to mention your barb can't even see your WDs templars gear so you don't really know if you crafted an upgrade... without swapping characters again. Not a good system.
Making all follower items class-specific. I love the fact that the relics I find are considered class-specific, and it makes gearing that slot a hell of a lot easier. Rings, amulets, and weapons, though are significantly harder to come by unless you're using the same primary stat follower. It would create more item types, but that could be changed by just reducing the chance for follower gear to drop (which isn't a big problem because we don't need gobs and gobs of follower gear anyway). At least then if a "scoundrel ring" drops it will leverage the smart loot system in favor of the follower instead of directly against it.
Perhaps best of all, just let players pick "low, medium, or high" for smart drops. I mean maybe I'm really looking for an item for my WD and I'd like to forego things for alts. Maybe I'm just farming in general and I don't really want so much gear specific to the character on which I'm farming. At least then I'd be able to satisfy both urges.

Vit is their main stat? I don't think so.
My enchantress has over 80k sheet DPS with fairly mediocre gear... not because I stacked vit on her.

I got a legend bow on my wiz so yes, its not always smart loot.
I'm aware that this could be 'abused' to the point that people don't really play alts until they have ALL the good gear. For me it would be more of a help to get at least started in T1. So I would gather enough decent gear that my barb could clear T1 more or less comfortably and then I wouldn't mind finding the rest on my barb. I mean it's also always a change of pace when you switch classes which I personally quite enjoy but I prefer to have the feeling of progression when playing T1 instead of expert or master.
But since I haven't played beta and don't really know how mystic and blood shards work there might be a decent enough workaround.
