I already miss it and I'm deeply disappointed by this decision. It was way more enjoyable to find loot that can be worth something to someone. Now it's just about myself, like an offline single player game.
I understand the arguments against it and I agree it was wrong that playing the AH was the way to get best gear. But that's what all the Loot2.0 stuff is for and it would be well enough. The new item generation system, new buffed legendaries and the Enchanting is more than enough to make sure nobody would need to use the AH to get great items.
If they kept Loot 2.0, with all the goodness and with legendaries account bound, and closed just the RMAH it would be a fine compromise.
The AH was a quintessential mixed blessing. I miss it every bit as much as I totally don't.
With that in mind, I've never enjoyed D3 as much as I do now, knowing that genuine upgrades are out there, but also build-changing sidegrades. On top of that, the anti-RNG countermeasures really take the edge off. I just hope I don't burn out before RoS ships.

/me looks at 1000+ hours played

I agree completely and I just wonder what Diablo 3 would be like with itemization where people didn't feel herded to the AH. I feel like most AH users ended up there because you just really couldn't find items in 1.x at a decent pace. The issue is when the developers tie item drops to trading. At some point they should have had the "wanna trade and get to endgame in 6 minutes? OK, fine... have fun" attitude instead of the "we have to make drops rare because people can trade even if that completely fucks the game up for everyone who doesn't trade" mantra.
The AH really suffered from being implemented in a game that wasn't nearly rewarding enough on your own and which had no item/gold sinks of any significance. Flux made a really good point on his most recent podcast... if you're a guy who only plays a DH in 2.x... you can't possibly be happy that you're sitting on a bajillion flawless square topazes and the only use they have is 62g per to the vendor or you have to roll a WD/Wiz. Even in the most perfect itemization people have some need to leverage assets they have, but cannot use or don't want in favor of things they do want and can use. Why? Because finding a bunch of things you cannot use or do not want just contributes to that "vanilla" feeling where you'd go days and days without seeing anything meaningful.
EDIT
Ultimately without something to do with the items you find the "economy" degenerates to exactly what it did with the AH when the idea of a "perfect" item is more or less the same thing regardless of class and build. Ironically the best item sink they came up with wasn't even allowed to "play" with a non-bound item game. Not only does the enchantress bind the item, but sucks down multiple legendaries just to get a chance at a new stat. And she makes less-than-perfect items much more attractive. Oddly enough these were all massive shortcomings of 1.x itemization which pushed people right to the AH.
Quote from DFxSANDY» I liked the AH, the RMAH was not such a good idea. Too much abuse. I hope they will allow in clan trading with a 2 hour limit.(to limit abuse.)
This will never happen, or places like d2jsp will never die. Get legendary, invite buyer to clan, trade, remove.
Why not check if they were in clan when item dropped, then allow it to be tradable.
This.
Create a 2 hour trade limit for groups and clans. Limit the trade to people who have been in the group/clan when the item dropped or at least be in the group or clan for the last 2 hours.
As loot 2.0 was introduced, i started a cold sorc. Almost 100% selffound, only used the ah for some few starting items. But, after about 150 hours played, i still haven't found a cold soj or an azurewrath while seeing people in my clan drop one every hour and destroying it. With my luck, i will probably need some 500+ hours to find that item just to see that it rolls the wrong stats. Thanks to enchanting, I'm able to kind of fix it, but it will be really anoying farming that one legendary item that you're missing for weeks and seeing people throwing it away every day...
People seem to lump the Gold AH in with the Real Money AH.
Remember folks, they're two separate things.
To the people that insist that the AH was "Bad" and ruined the community of the game... you realize there is NO WAY To trade *ANYTHING* anymore, right?

Can't you still trade rares by showing them on the clan chat? Even if they're not BiS people might still find some use for them until they find a good legendary.
I'm sure if you find some Trifecta lvl 70 Gloves and don't want to enchant it, you might be able to get another nice item for it (maybe even a Legendary drop from someone playing with you in a future farming session).
Quote fromMrDrProfessor4» I'd still pick the AH over no-trading-at-all any day!
The AH was a cancer.
I always loved trading in ARPG's. I really did. Hustling your way from a blank account to riches.
I'm really digging the new "economy". That I no longer look at items in terms of gold/trade value and I approach loot drops with only one consideration; How much value does this item have for me and my characters?
I posted a poll-thread here last year titled "Should the AH's be taken down?" Some called me crazy, but I would never have imagined when I posted that poll that a year later, the AH's would in fact be dismantled.
So....to the AH's and the influential stranglehold it had on the Diablo players experience....

Actually no they aren't. If you allow trading...which the AHs BOTH are people would just conduct their Real Money Transactions on third party sites. you would have solved nothing.
Why do you think the AH Tycoons are wailing over BOA and not the removal of the AH's? They just want to move over to D2JSP to sell stuff for cash. They just keep spouting BS about not being able to trade with their friends/spouse/kids/dog...because they think it makes them more sympathetic than saying they want to earn money.
Funny coincidence, they remove the AH the same day I stop playing ^^
Might be back one day... but sure as heck not gonna pre-order any RoS. Happy gaming. RIP AH. Maybe we will see you again some day, from developers that want to make some progress.

I see the line in the sand. Time to find out who I am. Looking back to see where I stand. Evolution.
It's really sad to see how ravenous and sociopathic the Diablo community has become where "I like to trade items" gets turned into "YOU JUST WANNA MAKE MONEY PLAYING A GAME" or "UR A PAY2WIN JACKOFF." Reminds me a lot of McCarthy propaganda, actually.
The completely baseless accusations based around nothing more than blatant exaggeration are staggeringly myopic.
What screwed things up was that game wasnt bot secure at launch. AH have NOTHING with that to do. Just having very big doubts that this expansion will give replay value for more than 2 weeks tops.
What screwed things up was that game wasnt bot secure at launch.
Please show me any game that had a 100% protection from from bots and hacks.
How about any and all console games since the 7th generation (we are in 8th now) ^^?
I hope you're not suggesting that console games are free of hacks? If so, please take a look at Diablo 3 for consoles. (Or I just misunderstood what you're trying to say.)
I think there is no argument here... The auction house in that form was a breeding ground for bots and crap. With the auction house gone and the introduction of all boa loot, the viability of bots and such crap will go down drastically. It is an inevitable occurence.
People are defending "trading" because they say they like it but you can't ignore all of the other things that free trading brings... As mentioned earlier, bots, 3rd party websites selling shit, all that crap. Seriously guys, if you still think that trading should be back in its old form then you clearly cannot see the whole picture.
It's like a baby in a sterile lab that wants to eat an ice cream... He used to be bale to eat ice cream in that lab because it was not sterilized. Now it is, so no ice cream is allowed. You can't have a sterilized environment and enjoy ice cream at the same time. Kinda crappy analogy but you get the point.
AH is gone, trading in its old form is broken and "unhealthy". That's it. And don't tell me that because d2 lived for long cuz of trading then this is somehow a proof that trading is a must. That's just a stupid argument that i can counter with so many points.
And by the way, i was a "heavy" auction house user including the RMAH both selling and buying.

P.S. Might as well add all Steam games, cause as far as I know, none have been hacked, at least not for online play. Could be wrong though, but I've not heard a pip. This was the reason that D3 was supposed to be online only... to work as a DRM and prevent hacking and botting... they failed.
Steam games not been hacked? LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Also, I can confirm that Steam games can be easily hacked. Their VAC system only gets you if you do really stupid shit (like I did by having 15 classes in MW3 cause I was lazy to prestige, and using a FoV changer wrongly).
It usually depends on the game as well, I think CoD Ghosts has some sort of limitation that doens't allow the VAC system to work in it, that's why that game is a hackfest =/
