All the good rares you see in the Ah still come from ingame. It is a game with fairly low drop chances, low drop chances are still better than no chances, which is what you get when you dont pick up any rares.
Even after loot 2.0 not every rare will be super duper, and you will still pick them up. I dont really get why you dont want to loot in a game that is 50/50 about killing and looting.
While yes, chances for a perfect trifecta are almost non existent, I still pick up rings in the hope of getting one some day. A duo-fecta also sells for a bit of gold, maybe not the billions you expect every item to be worth, but a few 100k also are worth something. At least to me. Maybe you are super rich and only care for the items in the billions range, but most people are not that rich.
@TwoFlower: Go back and read my posts again because you clearly misunderstood every point i made.
@Shaggy: right. And you, totally posting off topic is very helpful.
Really depends on how wealthy you already are. If your main goal is xph then you can skip all rares but not picking up jewelery is a bit wasteful even though you will probably pick up a thousand crappy amulets before anything worthwhile shows up (or not... rng).
I stopped picking up all armors including ilvl 63 archon gloves and all. Ever since they added the decent crafting, picking up those rares became quite obsolete, to me atleast.
I usually pick up ilvl 63 weapons like Slayer and Rune sword etc... I used to pick up ilvl 61-62 weapons too but i just stopped bothering with that.
99% of the loot you pick up is crap so missing one drop will probably not kill you. Don't go too much out of your way for a crappy rare even if it looks like it could be worth something.
Obviously pick up all crappy legendaries for the brimstones and don't forget the demonic essences. That's pretty much it. Oh and flawless square gems are somewhat worth it since you need perfect squares for crafting so pick up rubies / topazes / emeralds... Amethysts are kind of worthless.
What? How does that even relate to what i said? The gold has to come from somewhere? does that mean that you have to pick up items and sell them so you can get gold? What about buying a billion gold for 20-30$? That's not an option anymore? You could even use the RMAH instead and spend like double the ammount of money. Your sarcasm sucks.
To be fair, the discussion was about "items worth picking up" not about "buy gold and then ignore everything." The OP wanted to know if he should skip certain item types to increase his XP/hr. I don't think he was at all interested in more AH drama llamas.
The whole RMAH shit is really tangential. Unless you're buying gold you HAVE to pick up something to make some gold to spend on buying items, even if it's just a bare minimum to get into flipping. But there are certain people on these forums who cannot resist injecting AH trolling into EVERY discussion.
What the fuck are you talking about? "Drama llamas"? "AH trolling? Do I really have to go get my quote?
If you use the AH to buy your gear and/or mats, then yeah, picking up all rares is a waste of your time.
How is this trolling?
If you use the AH to buy gear and mats, then picking up ALL rares (not "ANY" rares) IS a waste of time; just pick up what has a high probability of selling, then buy your mats.
However, if you don't buy from the AH, then picking up all/most rares is worth it, because you're gonna need them for the gold (vendoring, or even selling on the AH) and the mats.
Can you point out where the trolling is?
The fact that I have to explain this just shows how dumb, paranoid and downright childish some people are.
I pick up items to sell on the AH/vendor to buy mats on the AH because it's the most efficient use of time without spending $ or flipping all day.
Flipping is quite a bit more difficult these days than a year ago, to the point I barely bother. Going from flipping items for a 50-250.00+ profit to struggling to make more than 30.00 in profit. Way less users and the ones that are around have decent stuff already. Add that to the fact that the ones still playing have a better knowledge of an items worth.
Bottom line unless you are a d3 day trader you're dumb for not picking up any rares that roll usable by todays standards. So essentially your comment is flat out wrong or just trolling. g'day
On topic: If you play softcore, I agree with only jewelry, 1h's and pants. On Hardcore, the market is not completely flooded and you can still make a modest amount of gold on other slots since there is still an item sink. I find that sheilds, offhands, helms, gloves, chests, boots, belts, gems, tomes can also be worth picking up. Also, the midrange item market is still viable on hardcore, whereas on softcore its completely dead. Things that are decently rolled which would only be worth 100k at most on softcore can be into the couple millions or so on hardcore. A star emerald on softcore might be 500k, but on hardcore its 1.5-2m.
This is one reason why I spend most of my time now on hardcore. I find that it is more rewarding, as well as more challenging, since more drops are worth keeping to sell to those people who die often and need to start over.
They can all potentially roll high DPS, primary/IAS, crit damage, life steal, socket for "end-game" purposes (other than wands and ceremonial knives, but they can still come with top DPS and LS). No 1-handed crossbows because Danetta's Spite and Calamity will pretty much beat the best ones.
2-handed weapons:
For some reason I only pick up level 63 ones (except sword) out of habit— Doom Hammers (mace) Decapitators (axe) Warlord Swords (sword) Oni Blades (sword - because they look awesome)
Picking them up because they can potentially be better than a Skorn, especially Doom Hammers (0.9 base APS) for channeling classes that don't like IAS. No crossbows because Manticore kills them.
Gloves (Manifers, Warlord Gauntlets, Stranglers, Sovereign Vambraces, Archon Gauntlets)
They can always match up in quality compared to crafted Archon Gauntlets. Base armor for <level 63 ones will be lower by default, but the potential 6 random properties are still worth the gamble.
Pants (Poleyns, Warlord Leg Plates, Schynbalds, Sovereign Tassets, Archon Faulds)
They can all potentially roll double primary + vitality stats, resistance, armor and two sockets for the best "balanced" armor piece in the game (in terms of both DPS and EHP, not favoring one end of the spectrum over the other).
Rings and Amulets
No need to explain.
All other rares more or less cannot match up to legendary and set items, or crafted varieties.
0-Dog WDs can look into picking up rare Voodoo Masks (Underworld Mask, Manitou Mask, Deva) for primary/vit + armor or AR + CC + socket + reduced Dogs cooldown. AP-intensive wizards can look into picking up rare Wizard Hats (Sinister Mask, Archmage Headpiece, Elder Hat) for primary/vit + armor or AR + CC + socket + APoC.
^^So, some, but not all, rares? How very interesting....
Why, yes. Is it interesting? I find it interesting that I pick up so much stuff. I hear my teammates sigh on Mumble when I tell them I have to go back to town to drop things in my stash.
And if I think about it, geez, those 20 seconds can cost me over 1M EXP. If I stash twice per run, that's probably anywhere from 5-10M EXP lost per hour!
But I must scratch my lottery tickets. There are still items out there that I itch to tear away from their owners, but I've retired from that. So I seek to find my own from sheer luck.
Found an axe last night with 1200+ DPS, 50+ CD, LS and a socket (on my monk). Found a Vile Ward last week with 650+ armor, 150+ strength, 280+ intelligence, 90+ vitality (total 800+ armor). One of these days I'll get something big.
for rares, pick up gloves, rings, amulets and one handed weapons, ignore everything else.
and ignore all instant brimstone legendarys. not having to visit the vendor so often is a huge time saver.
If you use the AH to buy your gear and/or mats, then yeah, picking up all rares is a waste of your time.
I disagree. Unless you mean the RMAH, picking up all rares is not a waste of time.
For those of us who use the GAH, those rares are at the very least a viable source of gold and materials.
And like it or not, trading on the GAH is a core part of d3 right now.
Regardless of what some people complain about, you do get lucky with drops once in a while.
Maybe not to the extent of hundred million or billion gold stuff but every little bit helps.
Playing d3 is something of a gear progression.
To answer the OP, if your current gear is already at the high end, yes skipping certain rares or even all rares in exchange for increased xp gain can be considered because the potential gain might not be worth the lower xp.
Resorting to personal attacks?
This is a discussion. Understand that.
Yes. This 3rd grade lvl reader is saying you should pick up all rares. Even "all ilvl 58 or 59 items. All 1H crossbows. Every single 2H weapon, including crossbows and daibos"
Guaranteed fail rares can be vendored or salvaged.
Vendored = Gold
Salvaged = Mats
Both Gold + Mats can of course be used/sold/traded in the AH. I would assume this is called using the AH.
"If you use the AH to buy your gear and/or mats, then yeah, picking up ALL rares is a waste of your time." What?
Being selective in picking up rares or picking all rares depends on your gear level not whether you use the AH or not.
If I am a poor beginner with minimal gold who uses the AH, I shouldn't be picking up ALL rares?
OP should not pick up ALL rares because his gear lvl is high enough since he can manage 80m-120m/xp per hour. That doesn't have anything to do with the AH.
As long as monster power is on, then the original ilvl doesn't matter, they will still roll ilvl 63 affixes. Base damage/armor is going to be whatever the ilvl says in the bottom left corner, but other than that anything dropped on mp1+ is ilvl 63 (or act 3-4 on mp0).
Also, if you play hardcore, anything that rolls decent level requirement reduction is going to be worth something, including daibos and 1h xbows, since people are always leveling up new characters.
When you pick up a lot of loot, you have to go back to town every two minutes and that pretty much lowers the potential usefulness of the drops since you are collecting them much slower than you could have been because you are going back to town a lot.
80% of the loot is NOT worth picking up simply because it will slow you down.

Actually, according to this post : http://www.diablofan...-monster-level/ they only have a chance (much lower than actual ilvl 63 items) to roll ilvl 63 affixes.
That is very interesting, I would like to see more to back that assertion up. Even so, It doesn't change the fact that there is a possibility for 63 affixes, which makes lower level gear still worth grabbing, for me at least. No item has a guaranteed chance of getting a level 63 affix, its all just RNG. I have picked up plenty of level 61 and 62 weapons with over 80% CD rolls (unfortunately they didn't come with socket+blackdmg+50%dmg rolls as well).
There is no right or wrong answer to "What is worth picking up?", its all personal. Do you play diablo because you really want to grind experience? If that's what tickles your pickle, then by all means ignore all but set and valuable legendaries. I personally find the gear hunt the most rewarding thing, which is why even before they buffed the shit out of XP in higher monster powers and gave the multiplayer bonus, I was grinding mp8-10 because the drops where so much more frequent. In fact, 90 of the 92 paragon levels on my softcore barb came before that patch.
As long those droped on mp1+ i pick up gloves and patns even if they are lv58. The base armor is lower but thats it. The possible rolls are the same regardless ilv. I just recently sold high int/trifacta/all res gloves lv59 for 300mil. :>
So, gloves+pants=all 58/59 items? Do you pick up lvl59 1H xbow? lvl59 2H xbow?
Do people not read what they themselves quote? I clearly wrote "all". I'm so confused.
Stop getting all butthurt and defensive when someone disagrees with your opinion. You apparently didn't read what he said, and jumped to an obviously wrong conclusion. He said pants and gloves, and that's what he meant. You seem to be looking for a reason continue an argument that no one else is interested in. Being antagonistic and destructive in your comments makes you a detriment to a conversation, find some other way to contribute.

Did the derailer intend to send this thread into tangential oblivion? And if so, well done, sir.
I'm quite sure there are people out there who purposefully hunt for topics to send into chaos just for a bit of fun.
