seeing how it's nothing more but farm, sell, buy, camp, snipe, etc
what's the end of this? pvp? mp10 faceroll? e-peen? to actually make money?!
have we not learned from top end players doing nothing after reaching their plateau but cashing out?
i don't want to say we're actually doing all these just to let blizzard earn profits (15% GAH, 1% rmah, gold buying, cuts from selling gold, etc) but it seems that way after all
i think i've actually lost my purpose with d3 even thinking it's alright to endlessly farm.
1) Reach plvl100 - since it sounds these will have some benefit in a later patch other than just stats. I am also a casual player so that goal will take me a while
2) Achievements - these can actually be fun to do. There are certain ones I want to do eg A unique collection or find the Murlocket etc
3) I grind/farm/sell because I know having a decent amount of gold /good items/high Plvl will be useful when the next BIG patch hits. Call it being prepared. As a casual player I hope that my slow and steady approach to D3 will let me catch up the elites who have played a lot but might have burnt out and stopped playing.
4) Gameplay I find fun
5) Earning money on RMAH is also a carrot for me. I cashed out $270 recently (which has taken me since the RMAH was opened to amass.. so I am not the biggest earning like those who have sold $250 items!). I want MOAR
I do agree though that right now a lot of people have reached the point of 'what am i grinding for?' and unless you make up your own goals (sort of like the above points) there really isn't an end game that D3 is offering right now- especially since almost all BIS loot can be bought rather than be found/crafted.
Itemisation patch is going to be the reason to farm again as it will hopefully give you that feeling of 'holy shit the legendary El'durin sword of Tyraels just dropped, holy shit holy shit holy shit"... That is that feeling that I am currently missing from this game.
Pretty much what @CheeCh said. Except I'm probably even more casual than him, considering how I play at least a dozen other games in my free time.
I don't know how much the absolute best D3 players make a month by selling items, so take what I'm gonna say next with a grain of salt.
I'm gonna take a guess and say that the amount of time required to get to that point paired with the low chance of beating guys who have much more time/experience to dedicate (and sometimes even a dedicated farming team) than the average Joe means that you can probably make more money than the average "D3 farmer" with a meh salary. I'd guess that I made more money in 6 months than one of these top-notch players can do in the same time period (and my salary isn't amazing).
And even if all that wasn't true, I certainly wouldn't turn my favorite childhood hobby, one of my favorite gaming franchises and my getaway stress-killer activity into a job-like part of my day no matter how high the profits were.
For me it's 1-4 what CheeCh said (definitely not #5 and making money and PvP).
Most of all, like you said in your first post, faceroll MP10. Only few of my chars can survive MP10, and none of them can really farm efficiently MP10. So I don't feel like there's no purpose.
I have to say though that after a year and close to zero self-found upgrades, it's not the anticipation of upgrades that drives me, but the experimenting with new builds and discovering new ways of playing the game, setting myself personal challenges (yesterday we started an MP2 run "as fast as we can" from start to finish)...
168,000 elite kills on your main! jesus christ!... i thought my slow and steady pace would do well... can you stop playing for 10 years so I can catch up?

believe it or not, never a cc mempo or anything beyond 300m drop
afaik the money train left a long time ago. I never bought anything and made some decent cash in the first few months but I haven't been able to stand playing more than a couple hours at a time a couple times per week for the last year. Lately I've just been leveling alts and doing achievements because it gets boring blending through everything on a barb.
What bothers me about Blizzard telling players to take a break is that they should be working on keeping players hooked instead
I would beg to differ on this subject, If registred diablo3 player on official forums maybe sounds as if he is about to burn out its actually beter for CM to tell him to take a break cause :
1) He sounds compasionate, down to earth, not greedy and all about cash.
2) On the other hand they allready "sold that copy"
3) If he takes brake they maybe think his chances to come back during expansion are increased
You guys all need to play hard core NO WAIT, COME BACK hear me out
I love softcore Diablo, don't get me wrong. If you look at my profile you'll see that's where I spend the vast majority of my time and it's for pretty much the same reasons as everyone else here has listed (I love facerolling mp10 with a group, etc) but Hard Core is really where the longevity of this game is for me. There really is nothing like the rush you get when you're sitting back, relaxing in your chair, farming through a map when all of the sudden an elite group comes up with some interesting affix combinations, and then, oh crap, there's another group of elites and then all the sudden you're up out of your chair, face close to the screen, adrenaline pumping, because, oh shit, you're about to die if you make a false move. I *Strongly* encourage you to just try it for a while and see if it doesn't just get you excited again about playing diablo. It really is a unique aspect of video gaming where these days everything has gotten so easy and it's all just about keeping you playing longer. The concept of bam, everything not in your stash is permanently wiped really makes it interesting.
TWO NOTES:
Don't tell me about your network connectivity issues. Every single person I've talked to has tried to get to play hc throws that excuse at me and you know how many friends I know have lost HC characters to lag? 0. You know what you do when your connection gets bad? Farm an area you won't die in or go play SC until your connection gets better.
You will die. You will. I've seen guys at 100k HP (Real HP, not EHP) 900 RA, 8k armor die on MP2, it just happens. Just like anything else, don't put all your eggs in one basket and be prepared. Don't get mad about it, just move on and make another character. I have two tabs in my stash devoted to nothing but leveling new characters and it makes it real easy. Every 2 levels or so, I just run to the stash and grab the next item in line and my characters are always face rolling through 0-60.
Edit: OP probably has more Inferno elite and lifetime kills on his wizard than the vast majority of this forum combined. Picha, I'm surprised it took you this long to ask, "Hmm, what else should I do?"

from time to time i do burn out and i stop but of course i come back and certain instances keeps me going. like what? leg drops, items selling for the price i want, flipped items selling, crazy snipes, having more kills than the next person even though it's pointless since highest records are by bots, etc.
when i play, i play hard but the consequence is that i also burned out hard and that's where forum posting comes in. it helps, really. a lot of people who saw my profile kept asking me how and why.
though i must say comparing from before, my game time has significantly decreased by 50-75% but longer than most people are still playing...then game, not AH. it's obvious a lot went AH3 and i've tried that and disliked it.
I burned out after hitting paragon 100 and got to the top 3 DPS in the U.S. (my original cash out thread is on this forum :P), but obviously I came back or else I wouldn't have met you, haha.
I can't imagine what burning out feels like at your play time. Breaks are good, though. Even one or two week breaks.
my burn out is pretty much the same as any kind of burn outs just that i always come back asap like nothing happened
i guess i'm a hardcore gamer. i did took a long break from gaming for almost 10 years (Heroes of might and magic 3, starcraft/broodwar, console, etc etc) then where i am now
i think the only way i'll be taking a break is either
-computer dies
-net dies
-debilitating health issues
-unforeseen circumstances (natural catastrophe and stuff like that)
-blizzard decided to screw everybody one last time by disappearing with people's money
-still no content announcement after blizzcon
-being unemployed
heck, not even during maintenance helps, i just go d2: lod and grind for them unique items

what i do dislike is the endless upgrades that i go through and the only reason i have for upgrades would be, 'just to farm a bit faster'
