The very definition of a scam (aka a con or confidence trick) is to defraud a person in a transaction by exploiting their trust. So getting people to believe that you need them to drop an item on the ground to "check if it's legit" is, indeed, a scam.
The best thing the community can do is to get their battletags out there and have threads like this as a reminder to the more-trusting people out there that certain actions, like dropping items on the ground, really exposes you to being ripped off. The best way to fight scams is to be informed - to make sure there are very few people who are ignorant of what will get them grifted.
