Hi there, sometimes Im in a situation when I have an item that, for example, gives me +4k life but my protection goes down by 2.5%, due to, let say, that my previous item had +250 armor. (this stats are actually from an item I'm watching at right now).
So, my question is, in terms of survavility, wich one is better?, that -%protection will be more important than my +4k life?.
mmm that will take sometime to fill :P, but, let me do this simple math, 4/38 > 2.5%. That means that my EHP will increase?, or am I missing something.
Of course the formula applies to every character but, due to minions, WDs have a less-straightforward relationship with defensive stats.
Theoretically, so long as your pets survive to the next CD, you don't actually need more defense (unless you're routinely getting faceraped). I'm sure the formula doesn't tell you that because that's something you can only experience through in-game trial and error.
Some may value not having their summons permenantly on CD. Some may run GI and not give a rat's ass. There are so many variables for WDs due to our defense coming primarily from our pets that it's impossible to throw it into a website and understand if it's worthwhile for you or not.
Fierce Loyalty + Blood Ritual favors high HPs for more life/sec to the pets.
Grave Injustice builds favor pickup radius to keep the summons available.
Jungle Fortitude favors resistances and armor.
Zombie Handler favors a mix of HPs, resistances and armor.
Both Leeching Beasts and how much bonus to health globes you have come into play in terms of how much defenses you need. If you're using Leeching Beasts, correspondingly, your total damage comes into play in your regen potential.
Are you an in-the-fray WD or an at-ranged WD? That matters a lot. WDs who get up in close quarters tend to favor a bit more HPs and a bit more resistances because the chances they take a punch to the face are higher.
Lastly, your total throughput has a bearing because more throughput results in shorter fights and less damage taken.
Bear in mind that none of these options are entirely mutually-exclusive either, so there is a fair amount of mixing and matching going on which further clouds the waters.
None of these are things that any website or formula is going to cover, but they have just as much, if not more, bearing on how much survivability, HPs, and how you should be gearing to achieve that than a tooltip or a website.
EDIT
Hell, due to how pet force armor works, if you're facing something that normally hits for 2k and your force armor is reducing all incoming hits to 1.75k max, well, all that armor and resist isn't doing a whole hell of a lot. But if you're facing something that normally hits for 12.5k, well, it's done a ton. Even though you cannot actively plan for that, the point remains that WD defense is, as Bruce Lee would say, "like water." It's fluid and adaptable and there is no one, perfect, shape.

No it is not nearly that simple. The tooltip does not accurately reflect how much protection anything gives.
It's definitely not easy to determine which is best gear when that happens.
If you already have both items (aka it dropped instead of "I wanna buy it on the AH but can't test it"), you can try both, go to DiabloProgress and check your EHP there
How is that related?, this formula should apply to every character.
Actually, since pets now gain some HP based on your own, and they gain armor as well (but that affects their "force armor" ability), it's a bit more complicated than that. I have no idea how to determine which is better
Right now (on 1.0.4, because it's gonna change a lot in 1.0.5) the best way to determine whether an item is better is just look at what's average for the Act you're playing. If you're in Act 2 Inferno, you probably want around 6k armor and 600 resist all, with anywhere from 25-35k HP. If you're in Act 3, then it's probably going to be around 7-8k armor and 800 res all, with about 40-50k HP. I'd say that's very doable.
At the end of the day, EHP governs your defense. My suggestion is has a mockup on EHP calculator before you actually change your gear especially buying gear on ah for an upgrade. Try to get the biggest bang for your buck.
My experience is that for any given resistance value there is a sweet-spot of Life to go for. For me at around 70% Resist All and 68% Armor that sweet-spot is 40k Life. Any less and I can't survive enough punches. Any more and I'm wasting affixes. The lower your resistances and Armor goes, the more Life you need to compensate. It also depends on your build, how many defensive skills you use. Glass cannon builds will obviously favor Life over resistances, since you aren't aiming to survive more than a few hits anyway.

My current HP is 38k.
If so what build are you using and how are you currently gearing?
