Nobody knows the numbers. This is just ridiculous that people assume that 80%+ players have quit because maybe several of your friends from launch have quit.

I do remember a blue post quite early in D3's lifetime which did mention a percentage of people playing Hardcore, according to their internal logging.
I can't remember what it was and I'm not sure how I'd go about finding it (maybe sift through the DiabloFans news page for late May or early June?), but I know it was a very small number. Somewhere in the order of a few percent.
You really think that more than 20% of the original players are still playing on a regular basis? Most people pick an arbitrary cut-off where they've "beaten" the game. Whether that's getting through normal, leveling to 60, completing inferno, or getting to paragon 100 is up to the player. For some of us, there's nothing that would stop us from playing, but we're certainly not the majority.
