I just feel like they failed to create a sense of community when you are in the game. Sure I can join the General chat and watch people chat every now and then. But there was just something about Diablo 2's screenfilling chat rooms and avatars and public games. I'm not trying to be one of those people who is like, "Boo D3 is different, FAIL." because I do like this game and there are a lot of things that I think they did very right. It's just that, the point of playing online is so you feel connected to people. I don't feel connected to people. Am I alone here?
I noticed over the last few years of Guild Wars, and now in D3, people rarely speak in pub games unless they're bitching. It's really sad how people are in such a hurry and have no desire to branch out and meet new players.
In D2, many of my best friends were met in duel games. I feel it is a tragedy, a fucking low-down dirty shame on Blizzard and Jay Wilson that they've done away with Diablo's created games and public 'wild-west' dueling.
I love this game....great potential and a possible masterpiece IMO....however, my one standing bitch is that they feel the need to tell us how to duel, to give us guidelines and regulation in a sterile arena format....a fucking shame.
I loved doing 8-player co-op games in D2. I absolutely loved it. I rarely ever did private games. In D3 I only ever do private games and there's a pretty simple reason why. One look at the b.net forums and I know, without passion or prejudice, that I want nothing to do with so many of the asshats whom associate themselves with the game. I want nothing to do with someone who is so pissed off at Jay Wilson that they'll join games to purposefully AFK in town to make my day miserable.
The people who make up the community have changed. It's not a bunch of people who are going to have a good time and damn the consequences anymore. It's now a group of people who, the moment something happens which they don't like, they start taking it out on everyone else.
I made so many friends during D2. I cannot say the same for D3, but most of that is by choice. I'm sure there are great people out there, but I really don't want to go through the bullshit to find them.
Just for clarification; Games are limited to 4 people because of vid-card restraints and playability, I'm sure. It's hard enough to tell WTF is going on with all the player skill and enemy skill animation, Witch Doctors being the worst offender.
My vid card barely handles the game with four players....barely, at the lowest possible settings. The difference between 1-2 players and 4 is dramatic....my PC would shit on itself if there were 8 players. Even if I had a top 'O' the line rig, I wouldn't want to deal with the animation graphics of 8 players completely blinding me during play.
Pretty sure there's only 100 people in general chat because that's the max amount allowed. There are multiple general chats, each housing <= 100 people.
And the D3 community is indeed horrible. No one talks in public games, no one talks in the chats. People join public games only to go AFK in town. Then when people are playing, they just leave the second they die, or someone else dies. This game feels very "off". A very dispersed and yes, empty feeling.
It amazes me that people don't have any real life friends that also share your interest in video games. I have about 8 friends spread out between college, work, and long time friends that play this game. I don't think I have ever logged on and not had at least 1 on.
I have played this game solo for about 30 mins Id say and it was boring as hell. I hate single player games and I also hate random pugs, make friends and the game become tolerable.
I do agree the community in the game blows if I didn't have RL friends wanting me to continue playing I would have dropped this game weeks ago.
i feel exactly the same, i tried a few public games but it was always a "wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am" approach so far, with very little discussion about how different features of the game feel to their class.
in diablo 2 so much of the playability was public, i spent a lot of my time just helping low lvlers and giving free stuff, now thats difficult.
i also belive its a general "battle.net 2.0" problem, i've also noticed the loneliness in WoW, seems strange calling a game with 10.5 million active players lonely, but it is...
back in the day you needed to find a group for a dungeon at the main city, assemble the group, go to the instace togather, communicate about tactic... when i recently played again (slightly b4 d3 release) it was a game filled with 10.5 million ghosts, no body talks, nobody wants to quest togather, even instances have an automatic joining system (rings a bell) and their so easy nobody even talks to eachother...
yes there are advantages to this system, i dont belive any1 tried to find a public game for a quest and didnt find one... but in my opinion the disadvantages rise above... from "cow level" to "free items" games the public game system in d2 simpy worked, and its a shame that a multi-million player game feels like a single player played online...
i guess that rethical's suggestion is the best thing for us though, just need to keep trying to find the few people decent players out there...
anyway, you're more than welcome to add me as a friend Barak#2116!
I think it feels like a solo game to me because of everything they do to discourage multiplayer games. The monsters gain too much HP and MF is shared but if you solo you get buffs from your companion and extra MF from it as well. You don't get increased loot like in D2 so what's the point in playing with other players? The answer for my character at least is that there is no point in playing with other players. Every time I have tried it has been inefficient.

Um thats becasue anyone with any decent skill or commitment to that game had DS completed months ago and are most likely not playing or playing very little. People doing dungeons and leveling at this point are more than likely newer players who are overwhelmed.
you're complaining about a sense of community while participating in a d3 community to make your complaint?
He's obviously talking in-game. Why this needs to be explained for you is a mystery to me.
this is part of the d3 community. why does it matter if it's inside the game or not? if you want to make friends to play with then this forum can serve that purpose just like many others. and you don't have to stop there. there's a zillion social platforms on the internet where you can meet other d3 players.

WOWs community is amazing its called your guild.
guilds is another feature that'll fit diablo wonderfully in my opinion, hope they'll add it eventually

Oh yeah I wasn't saying that I wanted 8-player games in D3 because I have the same issue. My computer is very capable of running D3, but sometimes in 4-player games I lose some frames. I actually find that Blizzard is the biggest offender, by far. A few Blizzards on the screen makes me want to bitchslap someone! I was just using the 8-player thing to make my stance clear: that I like playing co-op, and that I used to enjoy public games in D2.
EDIT
Seriously, people... quit it with the "there's only 100 people in the chat room" comments. Get informed instead of being ignorant and basing your opinion on stupid "metrics."
The difficulty of the game (inferno not being easy to clear for most people) combined with the desire to make money via the RMAH has made people want to play alone more often than not. It's not normally profitable to play with others unless you know them. You can't guarantee how good they'll be or if they'll stick around if a death occurs. And since they are, in essence, your competition for money via the RMAH, why would you group with them anyways since you are competing for the same customers. If they are worse than you and die a lot, you are hindering your own profit potential. If you are worse than them; they are in that same situation.
