I did... just yesterday. Got two set items already on a fresh char far before ending the first act. How many set item drops did you get already in D3, not to mention legendaries? We're not talking quality here, mind you - rather the feel that there are things worth farming for.
No - what you describe is the other extreme. Loot has no value if it is easy to get. It has little power to entice hunting it if it is too hard. But the statement has a more serious undercurrent - the one of people wanting lots of stuff now with little effort. I agree the game should have some items (Some sets and some legendaries) that are good enough to at least make us *choose* if we want a perfect rare/blue, or the legendary. *BUT* they shouldn't drop alot - not even at more than 5-10/month. Keep them rare, give them value.
In regards to D2 drop rates - those were upped significantly in one of the last few patches. The game wasn't like that for much of its tenure.
first 100 hours were fun, then its hours and hours of endless farming with tons of trash and no rewards
Someone didn't play Diablo 2... Titan's Quest... Torchlight... Diablo... Darkspore... or any other game in the ARPG genre it seems.
The drops will generally be piss-poor. I've now offically found my FIRST 1000+ DPS weapon in Inferno, like 2hrs ago. I've been in Inferno since the 2nd week. Go back and play Diablo 2, and tell me how "great" the drops are in comparison. Don't go with "what you remember". Go back and play it NOW, and compare. You will be shocked.
Diablo 2 was interesting because it wasn't the process of: Is it ilvl 63?
If no, trash it....it's 100% worthless
If yes, it's got a 99% chance of being worthless
You could get unique gauntlets with crap armor that's for a lvl 20 something and wear them all the way through the game because items were actually interesting and based off of worth...not item level.
I'm in this game for the long haul and already looking forward to the expansion.
If you're already looking forward to the expansion you can't be having THAT much fun.
I guess that also means that because I immediately began to anticipate the next Avenger's movie after watching the first one I didn't really think it was THAT good. Or that last time I had a really good meal at a local restaurant and thought about what I will try next time, I obviously didn't enjoy my meal THAT much. The process of anticipating something is mutually exclusive to a persons ability to enjoy something they are doing right this moment. Right?

I remember it otherwise. My memory might be playing tricks on me but I'd bet my ass that uniques and sets were much more frequent in D2 than in D3 even at release, because I played D2 for the first two years the most. But whatever.

Can't argue with that. But I'm not suggesting free legendaries to everyone at all. I didn't have the best sets and uniques in D2 but the main difference is that I had them and I knew there were better ones out there and that I can farm for them and I don't even need MF to have a good chance to find one or two of them after a day play session. Is it bad? Diablo 3 on the other hand - if you're new to the game and if you don't visit AH, you might play all the way to inferno and not even realize that there are set and legendaries in the game at all. That's not fun.

At the risk of being a tad pedantic, I think you are making assumptions about the type of player you are describing that, at least from my experience, are not correct. Assuming that we were talking about a brand new player who is unfamiliar with Diablo to the point where they don't know anything about item types, why would the scarcity of those items in game make the experience more or less fun for someone? Again we are talking about someone with no knowledge of their existence. If you didn't know what a jet ski was and someone took you to the beach for the first time and you got to build a sand castle, lay in the sun, play in the water, etc would you at any point say to yourself "Self, this would be so much more fun if I had some type of vehicle that allowed me to speed over top the waves whilst the wind blew through my hair?" I don't think you would, but maybe I am wrong.
To your point, in order for the relative lack of legendary and set items dropping to impact a players fun you really have to assume that they know what those items are, how they function, and that also to that specific person, the lack of getting those items is a drawback.
I enjoy playing certain classes different times(DH ,W), im not gonna lie...i have not even touched the melee classes as of yet..seems a little easy for me as there is little attention paid to enemies(till inferno). Iv played in parties with barbs and monks who dont move a inch when a power hit is about to pound their heads open! I find that no though is put in by many players and this is a problem.
D3 in my eyes is a farming game, and on top of that it can be played as a team.... increasing the difficulty due to factors! Playing in a team you find the elites and pay attention to the affix, laying down a plan and trying to stick to it as best as possible hopefully a quick and effective kill .It must be a challenge, there should also be risk...this makes Diablo exciting! I like the fact that i can adjust my character at anytime to fit my needs. I think people that struggle in D3 are those who don't like to adapt, they stick to one build and wish as hard as possible it will work, even if they use 6 offensive skills that all use arcane power for example! Now i know there should not be one type of build prece, but there should be basic thought into the build to make it work. More of this less of that
Also what i would like to add is MF gear! I grinded hard to get to lvl 60 with my wiz all the way to defeat beliel on inferno pre 1.03!
Then i decided to farm act one as i was broke from all the deaths and potions needed to perfect the beliel run (im also South african 250ms ping)
I got my self some decent MF gear that i collected and now its round the 180% with 5NV, and these days i get awesome gear drops.
Im no pro nor is there any specific spot where i find these good items, just last night i picked up a skull grasp ring lvl 61 from a chest(these were nerfed to the ground) in the festering woods act1 inferno with 0 NV, lucky i guess! So imo if you want Magic gear, wear MF gear! At least it will improve your chances of better items!
So in conclusion D3 is a great game, i feel it getting more and more challenging after every fix! Also what you get out of this game is what you put in, i want my wiz to not be a glass cannon 1,000,000 dps no no no! What i want is a agile, decent damage, fairly good resistance(forgiving small mistakes) wizard! I dont want to steam roll inferno act 3/4, there should always be some challenge. Currently i still think that the best challenge is inferno team play....LOTSA fun! as for all the you-tube videos of people farming act3/4 gear due to exploits, thats nothing to be proud of :/ hehe!
Enjoy the game fellow D3 players, and hopefully see you on pvp sometime!

You're an idiot. That's all I can answer this. If you can't differentiate between a finite experience like a meal or a film, and an on-going experience like a video-game, especially one based on farming and grinding like Diablo...well, I've said it, you're an idiot.
Ah yes. The rock solid, foolproof tactic of degrading to name calling. Hate to break it to you kiddo but video games are finite experiences too. Hell, life is a finite experience. It's cool, I get it. You just like to rant for the sake of ranting. Carry on and I will go ahead and heed the beautifully ironic warning in your sig and will not continue to feed the troll.

Oh man... It was an example just for the sake of describing how rare set/legendaries drop rate in D3 is. No need to expand on that. lol

Hence my warning about possibly being pedantic Sorry for the interruption and now back to our regularly scheduled D3 conversation.
p.s I may have to take the jet ski out this weekend. It's sad to say I have not done so this year.
still having fun 4 sure.
auctionhouse destroyed the game in my opinion.
also legendaries are so disappointing, where are all the cool affixes from diablo 2( like frost.nova on hit for example).
hope they fix that.
They are… Blizzard has noted it repeatedly.
The AH hasn't totally destroyed the game it just made the behind the scenes activity the norm from D2... also more efficient compared to trade channels. I personally am not using it anymore, it really makes item finding not fun.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.

Just my two cents on your items idea.
But yes, i will still play, D3 is awesome imo.
