So there I was farming act 3 and thinking to myself, "Well they want me to kill elites but I like also killing bosses so why not bring the best of both worlds?"
My idea is fairly simple but I believe it would achieve both goals: let NV stack beyond 5 stacks. I still believe the MF/GF should be capped but the idea would be simple each stack beyond 5 would mean an additional rare drop from the boss. Instead of getting your 1 rare for the 5 stack this would encourage longer and more fruitful runs for everyone.
It seems this would solve the problem of exploring (as Blizzard wants us to do) and also solve the player desire to kill bosses and get good loot.
If a player was required to kill 8-10 elite packs then kill the boss for a massive payoff its the best of both worlds. To get that many stacks you'd have to clear a fair amount of a given act and then the boss fights would once again feel epic with a big explosion of yellow.
I would love it, but it will never ever ever ever happen. Get yourself some decent MF gear and farm act 1 if you want tons of rares.
Leorics manor (including outfront), Festering woods (including 2 caves), Cemetery Graveyard (including defiled crypts), Halls of Agony lvl 2, Cursed Hold, Halls of agony lvl 3, Butcher. Thats my act 1 run. I get upwards of 60+ rares per run, about 1/3rd are ilvl 61+. With 5 stack NV I am at 250 MF. On top fo that I come out with more than 200k gold per run not including what I vendor.
Its an ok idea, but the only way to make it not too good is to have every 5 stacks give 1 more rare from a boss (instead of every one), or maybe even every 10 past the first 5 give an extra rare. This would force you to explore quite a bit more and not cause a huge influx of rares, but still provide a little more benefit to exploring.
I like the idea, but one extra rare per NV past 5 would be way too much. I'd imagine we'd be up to 10-15 NV if we started near the beginning (probably even more). Maybe if it were every one past 5 was just an extra magic+ drop, and it had the standard chance to become a rare.
Alternatly, anything past 5 just increases magic find, but you can only go past 5 by killing mini-bosses/bosses/uniques that don't normally give a NV (and just to clarify, they would only add an NV if you were at 5). It encourages players to go after minibosses more so then now, and encourages them to have as long a run as possible, instead of finding the fastest way to get 5 NV then a boss. I could see running Act 1 from post Old Tristram all the way through the Butcher, and being able to end him with 15-20 NV. You'd only get a handful of items, but they'd have a much higher chance of being good.
Also, for every NV past 5, two whites will drop from every unique/champ/boss mob. Just cause I love lootsplosions. I mean, imagine killing the Butcher, and getting 2-3 Rares, 5-6 Blues, and 20 whites? It'd be glorious.
I think the NV system is fine where it stands right now. To me it's the one system they don't need to waste a time tempering with. There's so much out there to fix, I'd rather have them focus on more important things first.
All this 'letting NV stack higher' would only encourage playing for several hours at once, which really wouldn't go down well.
5 stacks NV then boss is flexible. Going up to 10, 15, or even 20 (god forbid) would mean you can't just spend 1 hour at a time; you'll feel forced to clear entire acts before touching a boss.
And how bad would it feel if you've cleared everything possible, done everything you can, yet still miss that one stack necessary before hitting a boss? It wouldn't be the end of act boss, but one like the Skeleton King or Ghom. That'd feel really crap.
As it is, 5 stacks NV then boss (then going after extra elites if you have the time) feels good. You could just do your boss run if that's all the time you have; alternatively, if you have more time, you can keep searching for those elites. You get tons of rares from this process already; adding more NV stacks would horribly bloat the game.
You're meant to spend several weeks/months to get gear. That's the entire point of the game. You're not meant to get fully geared in days, that's the extreme minority.
The only way I see the boss worth doing is either by dropping more rares OR dropping one single rare that has high chance of being ilvl 63, I would mind doing more champion/elite packs if I can improve that chance.
I'd rather have less loot but actual good loot. I played today for about 2h 30- 3h, I found a crap load of rares, all crap. I don't even know why I still play this game, so stupid.
Don't see any need to adjust NV. I already kill bosses in whatever act i'm farming since eventually i get to them and with measly 70 MF i'm getting 2-3 rares most of the time. Since bosses drop like 6-7 items i suppose ppls with really high magic find are getting almost all rares from boss.
its fine, it already rewards for starting early in an act and wokring to the end... you farmers... ever tryed it? it gives LOADS of yellow! (thats how i found an ~1150 dps bow)
5 stacks, same as it is, 1 extra random rare per champ pack
15 stacks, 2 extra rares
30 stacks, 3 extra rares
Kill bosses with those stacks, those extra rares are guaranteed ilvl61-63 depending on act you are on.
There, you have system that promotes exploring absolutely every small corner of the map, including those with Soul Lashers and phasebeasts. You can think it's more time consuming, but that's how Blizz want this game played. They nerfed boss drops because people were doing too much of them after stacking to 5. Now people don't want to kill them, so they will buff them, but if people repeat doing boss rushes, nerf again.
Literally, Blizz won't stop fiddling with drop system until you will be farming whole act, both champions and bosses, and it would be much better if they made it by giving rewards to those players, instead of nerfing everything else (like now) until every farming method is dull and unrewarding.
Then I must be really unlucky too. So what we are asking for is better rares or "lucky" rares if it makes you feel better to put it that way. A 415 dps 2H barb weapon with 100 Strength is not the "lucky" rare I was hoping for when I saw it was an ilvl 63.
I think they going to do something very similar to this. They said they had a blog coming up about magic find and gold find. I wouldn't be surprised at all if NV started at level 1 and essentially replaced MF/GF and built % without limit at a slower clip. This could, of course, easily be scaled to your level. At level 1; each stack of NV is 1% MF, at level 60, it's 10-15% per stack.
I'd definitely go for it, personally.
You could also change NV slightly too. In normal, swapping skills = no NV penalty. Nightmare = losing X stacks. Hell = losing more stacks. Inferno = losing all stacks.
I just think that NV should affect chests... They drop too crappy loot atm...
They are bringing MF/GF back to chest/corpses and stuff like that, Can't remember was it in 1.0.3a or 1.0.3b patch. Wich I think is absolutely needed, chests are just worthless right now.
I beg to differ. You can still get plenty of good stuff from chests. Hell, my brother found a very nice legendary xbow, which was rolled quite well, from a CORPSE. They're just not as good for the people who thought it was great gameplay to swap out 8 items every time they found a chest, but make no mistakes about it, if you are just running past chests right now, you are doing it very wrong.
Their solution will most likely be some kind of middle ground between gear-swapping and no benefit at all.

Heh... I think it's VERY unlikely that they'll increase the max stacks for NV. When they first announced it, they said they were thinking between 2-5 stacks because they didn't want to force people to have to play for hours on end to be efficient. I think even at 5 stacks, they're nearing that dangerous mark.
For the most part, I only have time to play over lunch these days so I'm pretty much the target they have for playing time. 1 hour is enough time to stack up to 5 stacks and do a bit of decent farming but it hardly feels efficient. Anything higher would be even worse and would require even more time.
Honestly, with the new changes to rare packs with 5 stack NV, I wish they'd reduce the max NV amount to 3. It's just not possible to do quick 30 minute runs now.
NV is fine. I feel like it's a feature that's actually working quite well. The only problem with it is that they reduced elite pack spawns so you waste more time searching for that 5th pack to get max NV stack. Otherwise, NV is great.

Thoughts?
they've already nerfed elite pack spawns into the ground for a lot of maps
yeah

64 stacks - 59 rares
yay
