A very small minority of players actually consider this franchise more appealing when played alone. The only reason you are hearing from them louder than ever right now is because of how sketchy the servers are right now.
The status of servers has also given single players some sort of temporary recruitment, where people who only play online seem to flame the inability to play offline. Once servers are stable, those people will be quiet.
No one will remember anyone ever cared about lack of offline play once servers are stable and we can all stop going;"gasp look at meta critic scores!"
The people who actually value offline play for this multiplayer game haven't shut up since it was announced. We just couldn't hear them quite as loud.
As an example, religious fanatics recruit more people to their cause in times of panic and uncertainty. I give you Diablo III launch.
Maybe D3 will be there sooner than we all thought.
In the grand scheme of things... 1 day of issues isn't THAT bad. We've been waiting for years... we have hte game.. and we can get a taste of it now (unless the morsel that was the beta).

Not sure where you got the "small minority" from. The number of players who single play through normal once in D2 (i.e. treat it like any other throw-away console game) was pretty damn high and made for a ton of Blizzard sales.
These noncomittal guys are a pretty small minority of online game forum users, I'll grant you that.
