It just came to me today. When I was playing the D3 beta I never got hit by a random trap (fire, explosion, frost/fire/lightning/posion nova etc) from opening chests/destroying urns etc.
Is this gone completely? I know there's still skeletons from barrels and such but they were never that really life threatening.
I remember in the Cathedral there was a rare room segment that had a Resplendant Chest inside that when first used would drop into the floor and unleash a room full of monsters....

You are right about the Novas and exploding chests though. Seems like they took those out. I was slightly disappointed... Then again, I play DH, so those things (unless we're talking trapped chests) wouldn't really affect me. I can roll away and shoot barrels from a distance!
Yeah, there were plenty of traps. Many were instantly recognizable as traps though.
There's that resplendent chest trap in the cathedral level 4, sure. There were also traps that spawned 3ish shield skeletons upon looting a chest or corpse in the cathedral. There were traps outdoors where just moving by an area would have coffins shooting out of the ground with skeletons coming out. There was also that large 'event' in the area before you get to the crypts (can't remember the name, but the large outdoor area right outside town) where mist would sprout up and tons of skeletons would spawn.
I fully expect a lot more diverse traps to come as well, even within Act I normal. We've seen videos of grated floors that have fire shooting up as well as huge swinging pendulum axes hanging from the ceiling etc.
Not to worry, traps are there. They were there in the beta, we'll see many many more come retail.

Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness,
Bringing torment and pain to others.
Your damned soul wallowing in your sin.
Perhaps... it is time to die.
There's also a trap that appeared in gameplay footage from the area right after the cemetery (which people got access for a few days in the beta unintentionally), in that huge light green forest open area there were some sort of "rat traps", which damage the player when he walks by it/steps on it.
Don't know how many remember this but there was an "event" that was in the beta YEARS ago (was in act 2) that involved a tomb that started collapsing when you entered it. You had a limited amount of time to grab loot and find your way out, don't know if that qualifies as your trap or not ;-). heres the link http://www.diablowiki.net/The_Collapsing_Tomb
2 chest in dungeons Jar of souls, and some other one in a small room.
The BS apprentice spawns a bunch of mobs when you loot his corpse.
In one of the fields there was an area that lit up and spawned a bunch of mobs when I walked though it.
I am thinking there might have been one more in the a field when I looted a scarecrow.

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"
Okay perhaps I was abit vague, I'll try to explain again.
In Diablo 2 whenever you opened a chest/looked behind a rock flipped a corpse etc, you could get a sound of a switch being pressed (warning for something dangerous to happen) The chest itself could start to burn/you could get targeted by fireballs/lightning bolts/different aoe novas (posion, fire etc)
And for example, when you hit barrels they could explode for sometimes dire damage (perhaps about 30-40%) now the only thing that can pop out is some fragile skeleton.

No, I haven't seen any traps in those form or iteration. All the traps we have seen have been somewhat more advanced or a pressure-plate kind.
Honestly, the D2 traps were lame and ineffective at best. Barrel explosions don't have any gameplay depth to them. You either chose to destroy barrels and take slight damage or did not destroy any. The chest traps were easily avoidable. Just run on a diagnal out.
Being locked in a room with twenty mobs or having giant axes fall on your head are much more interesting trap designs IMO.

There is a few examples from gameplay that was released. There are fires that shoot up from the ground and giant swinging axes.
