That is mostly because the follower's DPS isn't even close to what a player hero would have. Early in the beta, when you're around 50-60 the Templar follower is going to deal at most 5-6 DPS (which is a 10% increase, not useless, but definitely not going to carry you).
They're there mainly to provide some utility, and being a diversion (the Templar at least). I think it's somewhat possible that a well-equipped Scoundrel would deal something around 15-20% of your damage (being a solid dps addition, but one that you must "protect").
The beta also says that followers gain 2.5x the stats from items. So if you give your Templar a +10 STR shield, he will gain 25 STR from that shield. That's probably to compensate for not being able to equip them with all the armor you can.
I think we've heard something about us getting 20% of the MF/GF from the follower's equipments.
If they have 100% magic find from their items, we would get 20% bonus for ourselves. I don't think it is confirmed as of this point.
When my follower had 24% gold find worth of items equipped the detailed stats sheet said that he contributed 5% gold find. 20% of 24% is 4.8% which is approximately 5%. So I would say that at this stage of the game the followers do contribute 20% of their adventure stats to your hero.
However to clarify my 2nd question - just like the follower shares 20% of his MF with the hero, does the hero's MF also get "shared" with (or rather leeched by) the follower? I'm hoping and assuming no, but I'm wondering if anyone could provide a definitive answer...
Wow I never thought of gearing up my follower, nice idea to increase MF/GF
Yea, if Zero is correct that difficulty doesn't scale with followers, and yet MF is shared only one-directionally (i.e. from follower to hero, not the other way), it seems only logical to run with a follower. The only reason I can think of not to run with one is if you don't like how fighting style potentially changes with followers present (e.g. I personally didn't like how a templar/tank affected the flow of my demonhunter)

Hopefully the other followers will solve that issue so that you can get the kind of gameplay style you want.
I have been running beta without a follower to increase the personal challenge, but when the game comes out I really can't see myself passing on that extra GF/MF.
Killing blows do not determine whose MF is applied so it stands to reason that follower kills will simply use your MF (which is your MF+.2*MF of your follower).
I've been playing mostly with a follower and I appreciated it.
As posted above difficulty seems to not increase if you use the Templar and the +MF/GF is a good addition (just sum the +% on your "details" and +% on his "details")
Also it's useful as a buffer/healer (like keeping your pets alive if you use give him Loyalty) or to slow mobs down if you are a caster with hi DPS but low FCR.
The Follower doesn't have a MF so to speak. He simply buffs your own MF.
Lets put it this way, the Follower never sees gold or item drops for himself, only you see those drops. It doesn't matter if you killed something, the follower killed something, a pet killed something etc. If an item drops in solo play, it will only ever use 'your' MF score. The follower doesn't 'leech' MF from you because he doesn't have a MF score. So, everything that drops when you play solo uses MF score on your character data, regardless of what actually got the kill.

Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness,
Bringing torment and pain to others.
Your damned soul wallowing in your sin.
Perhaps... it is time to die.

Cool, very good to know. I'm definitely running with a follower then. Maybe a scoundrel with 'vanish', so he disappears often and doesn't actually impact my gameplay... lol

Loyalty applies to pets too? I've never tried it, but description reads "Regenerates 155 Life per second for you and the Templar."
