Runes will be purple, Legendary items orange, Rare yellow, Magical items are blue, Normals are white and Junk items are gray. Unlike Diablo II, sets will not be classified as their own item type. Legendary (or unique) items can be a part of a set and contain set bonuses.
Runes are not drop-able items anymore.

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...

Sorry but this is incorrect. The qualities in D3 are as follows:
Grey (Junk)
White (Normal)
Blue (Magic)
Yellow (Rare)
Green (Set)
Orange (Legendary)
AFAIK, and based on the current official item guide, set items work exactly as they did in D2. Also, runes no longer exist as items.

It's actually
Grey (junk)
white (still junk but not as much)
Blue (magical)
Yellow (rare)
Orange (legendary)
Orange (set)
Green (lore and quest items)
*just to clarify* When set items drop they will be colored the same as legendaries - orange. Green is reserved for lore and quest items. There are no purple items as they were runes but runes do not drop anymore.
That does make sense seeing as how the pages that drop about the lore are indeed green in the beta. Is there an official source you found the information about Set items? I can't recall anything of the sorts.
There is no official source, but the most accurate information we have is the Diablo 3 site and official item pages. Unless there are items in game that are not in that list, we can only assume the colors are final.
Green is definately reserved for quest items, so they won't use it again for another type of non-quest item. They may have a new use for purple, but I would assume they will save it for future updates if they come up with a cool idea for a new type of drop to add to the game.
Well no there's an actual, official source. Bashiok confirmed that sets are also orange, the same as legendaries. And that green was reserved for lore and quest items.
Edit: @ Serix69, I think it would be cool to use purple for charms, when they implement them in a future exp pack =D
how many in total are there and what kinds are they?
Runes are not drop-able items anymore.

The only ones not displayed here are gray and quest items.
