Usually I don't say anything negative about popular games - People have a tendency of polarizing and flaming when controversial opinions are raised. I'm going against that instinct in the hope that we can have an adult conversation about this.
I saw a video clip of the new armor sets. In my opinion (Read that twice: IN MY OPINION), most of the "higher end" ones look ridiculous. It's almost like the designer for those armor sets let his 14 year old son draw them out. They're the most over-the-top, excessive, over indulgent designs I've ever seen. I can't describe it better than that. Why does the barbarian look like a robot, a futuristic cyborg samurai, or a Hercules beetle? It's just...it's bad.
This isn't a big deal of course; It's not game breaking or anything. I'm sure we'll all enjoy D3 just fine even if we look like Japanese Power Rangers. I'm just a little concerned that the judgement of some of the people on the blizzard team might not be...reliable. That worries me.
Edit: Here are some of the worst for the barbarian class. They look like something Lord Zedd and Rita would summon to fight Zordon. The last one looks like the Red Ranger's Megazord.
I was actually surprised by the number of positive feedback from those armor sets.
I like a good deal of them myself actually as well. I think they did a great job.
I think they did an awesome job all round on the armor progression/design even the lower looking stuff looks cool. Not everyone is going to be pleased about every aspect of the game. Some will like all of it, some will like most, some will like a few and some very little at all, as molters said each to thier own though

To each their own!
I hate to agree with you since I love trolling ya <3, But yeah I am actually impressed so far with most the armor sets. The only ones I disliked and not even dislike but would pick last were the monk/witch hunter and mainly its just not my style.
But damn they are pretty fine armor sets. I bet the WoW players are crying wanting some new sets but then again the Panda Tier armor looked pretty badass the last time I looked so it just seems like overall Blizzards on their game with armor sets haha.
I'm happy with them; I will feel cool when wearing them for sure
But man, I can't help but think that a lot of the Blizz (art) dev team had been engrossed in WoW for years and it was hard to make a different RPG for the sake of difference. But maybe it's just that Blizz's art styles in 3D games come off as similar... ie blocky/cartoony/figurative over realism... a difference compared to their 2d games. I'm probably over-thinking...
I check the forums section of diablofans once every few hours. Wh...why do people make thread titles with like three sentences?
Just kidding, my posts are usually 5 paragraph essays, so who am I to criticize
I was also very surprised to see positive feedback. People have forgotten the whole "horns" meme that existed in the official forums some time ago. That's the only thing that bothers me, the absurd amount of "horns" they use. Bull, elephant, rhyno, unicorn beetle horns (among others). I wonder how many animals were harmed in the making of all these armors.
Which is why I mostly love the ones that have no horns. But I don't think I dislike any of them, they're awesome that 2nd one is a mean looking Sauron.
Blizzard don't know how to make something that looks simple and high end at the same time. Their strategy to make strong looking item is adding alot of horns, crystals, spikes and light effect. Imo thats a big deficiency from their artists.
Totally agree with OP. Theres an disconnection between Diablo 3 game and Diablo lore & background when it comes down to some visual aspects. I mean, take the Sin War trilogy or other novels... Theres no armor description that barely ressemble anything like what is shown in those high end tiers. Also, take the concept arts... The barbarian is allways wearing something that is 100% different from those high end gear. If there was an diablo movie i bet none of the character, even top elite legendary ones, would have anything like those high end tiers...
Imo thats an 100% objective critique i cna make about this armor tiers. They simply don't translate what is shown to us about Diablo universe via other medias (books, novels, concept arts). Theres an disconnection and imo thats terrible. It's like D3 is one thing (visually) and other sources are another...

This. Also, Blizzard's artists seem to focus too much on the visual progression from this armor set to the the next and not enough on flavor. "Barbarians" wearing massvie, overengineered plate armor which took hundreds of hours to create at an extremely advanced forge just doesn't make any sense. I get it, they found it or the blacksmith made it or whatever, but where did they come across the training to wear armor that weighs more than they do? It looks cool and everything, but it doesn't make the least bit of sense to me.

...and if you disagree with me, you're probably <insert random ad hominem attack here>.
I agree some of the armour sets from the various classes look a little awkward, but for the most part, I think they did a good job. The Tier 16 armour for each class looks pretty sweet, I think.
What I'm wondering is...when they add an expansion pack with a further Act (including an increased level cap), what's the next tier of items going to look like?

Now, I still haven't gotten over how ugly the shouder pads are for the high level monk armor tiers. Glad Blizzard make an invisible dye.
Although I do agree that some of the armors just looks ridicious, you have to realize that gameplay is in isometric view. Blizzard is all about the distinct silhouette as they have mentioned a couple times in their art panels at Blizzard.

Blizzard has gotten into this rut ever since they started designing WoW and its expansions. They started off by making cool and original armor sets for the classes in Vanilla and continued to try to make each set look more crazy and over-the-top with each tier being introduced. By the time Wrath of the Lich King hit, they ended up having to make most classes look like hobos trying to survive the harsh climate and basically reset the coolness factor on the tier sets.
This whole progression-type of mentality has carried over Diablo 3 it seems. There's plenty of pointy armor and also fully suited sets of armor that seem unpractical or over the top.
If they bothered to just re-render some of the classic Diablo armor sets while throwing some new stuff in there, I think the results would be surprisingly awesome.

Some people tell me I'm going to hell. I just let them know that I've already packed my bags!
I didn't like the majority of armors as well. I'm not someone who needs realism but their style was so over the top it stopped looking like powerful armor. I was especially disappointed in the monk's armor because I didn't feel like it flowed with his style. They could've made it durable without making it look so heavy.
That exaggerated style is kind of the trademark of fantasy games imo. Huge helmets and shoulderpads that would be impossible to use realistically. Same deal with the weapons, I like that style and those over the top sets are usually my favourite.
We're talking about a game company whose entire visual style is based on excessively bulky armor with spikes and skulls on everything, and then setting it on fire.
Diablo 1 and 2 armor had a ton of spikes on it, it was just rather low-resolution so you couldn't get all the skulls, flames and lightning bolts that we see in WoW armor sets. The increasing over-the-topness going from D1 -> D2 -> D3 armor is a logical progression.
Also if you go back and look at the early D3 character class concept arts, any time they wanted to show a "high level" character they already had humongously oversized armor with lots of embellishment. That's Blizzard's visual style, every bit as much as the exaggerated lens flares in the Mass Effect series, or the bright high-contrast colors of the Halo series.

It always had a special place in my heart.
I'm kinda neutral on the armor designs atm. Could be better, but w/e.
