It's simple. When you cast an aoe spell, you don't cast it instantly. You activate a targeting icon, just like aoe spells in Warcraft 3. Then you move it around with the right thumbstick. That's how it works in most games. In LoL this is the default control. If you instantly cast where the cursor is, it's called smartcast (the default for diablo). Smartcast is more fast paced, but it's not indespensable.
Yeah, except on the PC you have the mouse that you can move quickly (or pre-locate to where you want it to be) to the spot you want. On the console, where's the targetting circle gonna start? Somewhere at your character I assume. It'll be a pain to try to move it where you want when a horde of demons is charging your location.
That's just something you have to deal with when you play on a console. Targeting will always be slower, FPS games are an example. Do you think Blizzard is going to scrap the console idea because targeting might be a half second slower? Come on.
Console versions are for non-PC gamers or people that want to play D3 but there PC doesn't measure up to its requirements, you got to realize most people don't use computers specifically to game. They use consoles as a means to gaming, which is why its a good idea to port it over.

Just purposefully being argumentative here for the sake of conversation, but that half second could be the difference between life and death in Inferno mode.
There's only one good reason we probably won't see D on consoles - Bliz are control freaks that aren't capable of sharing tech with companies like msft or sne. Well, maybe not a good reason, but it is obstacle 1. through 10.
Even though I am playing Diablo 3 on PC and will probably never play it on a console (that's if it ever even comes out on one). However, I feel that dungeon crawlers in general can play pretty well with a controller if they're set that way. One example that comes to mind is Dungeon Siege III. I ended up playing that game with my 360 controller. Granted that's because the PC controls were super clunky, but it still felt really good on a controller. I am sure that if Blizzard were to put Diablo 3 on a console that they would take their time to make sure that the UI is console friendly.

"No one gets to heaven 'til they've lived awhile in hell and even then it's rare that you'll be going there."
I'm just wondering how targeting will work for consoles. On PC we have the handy cursor to aim, which consoles lack. I imagine that they'll have the control stick move and turn your character, and you'll just fire in a straight line from where you're standing. That has a lot of potential to be inaccurate.
What they could do to remedy that is have auto targeting, or the shoulder buttons to tab between targets. This doesn't really feel like it would work well in the fast-paced combat they're trying to portray in DIII.
And what about ground-targeted abilities, like the Barbarian's Leap? Will it just guess what enemy you want to jump on, or if there are no enemies, just jump as far as it'll go? That doesn't seem good to me.
I wonder how it worked for Torchlight. I only have it for PC and I've never seen it on consoles. It's essentially the same as Diablo.
It'll be like Skyrim for melee classes and an fps for ranged classes! For all we know they won't be satisfied with how Diablo plays on consoles and scrap the whole idea all together. Or we could see it as an entirely new diablo game in about 30 years.
Don't understand the enmity towards a console version of the game. A few points:
1) Blizzard wouldn't delay the PC version for consoles. This much is plain.
2) How would a console version erode any value the PC version has?
3) A console version WOULD work. Not sure the arguments against it..... firstly, D3 keeps your character centered on the screen, so a joystick for movement works fine because it's not an RTS that requires you to scale around a map. It's all movement that is perfectly mappable by a joystick. Also, D3 has only a handful of skill bindings, and the controllers have more than enough buttons to account for them.
4) Honestly, I'd prefer if they tuned it up for consoles and let us all play together across platforms. One of the first truly cross-platform games would have an online following and community that couldn't be rivaled. I could play D3 with console friends without problems. But of course, a console version probably won't do this, especially seeing as this is Blizz's real first foray into modern console gaming (SC Ghost I guess wasnt up to scratch).
If SC-G is any indication, Blizz is actually very committed not to releasing shitty games. They have a very powerful brand and want to ensure the level of quality stays high. This is because people who don't even play their games, or maybe play only a single universe, are much more inclined to try out Blizz's new game whatever it may be simply due to that reputation. D3 is absolutely huge, and there wasn't this many people playing D2 at any point. The marketing and surrounding hype, along with a huge established audience with WoW and SC2 out, is making this game bigger than any Diablo sequel would have been if they made it prior to SC2 and WoW.
I think they will release a different version of the game for console. Thus giving people who already have the PC version, a reason to buy it on the console as well, outside of personal preference.

However - I also think first person shooters are COMPLETELY RETARDED with a controller, and look how popular those are. I don't see any reason why it wouldnt be successful as a port.
Totally agree! Can't stand FPS with a console controller.
Starcraft ported to Nintendo 64 and it wasn't totally shit house.
People, I'm very, very certain D3 will come to consoles, or more accurately console. Blizz was hiring next gen console devs. The reason they hadn't started developping in 2011 is because it's targeted for the next X-Box and PS3 or its successor. The current X-Box is possibly too crappy for Blizzard (and for me). (edit: console because I'm not sure if they're targeting PS3 too)
Blizzard have been hiring Playstation 3 developers since May/June last year. Who said they didn't start developing it for the PS3 in 2011? even if they did, they wouldn't tell us that, the game hasn't been officially announced yet.
