Sorry if I missed this but I've searched a few times over the last 6 months to see if anyone has ever asked this or even randomly mentioned it and I haven't seen anything on it. Back in D2 you could find each individual unique only once in each difficulty. Does anyone know if the Legendaries (the new form of uniques) will still only be found once per difficulty?
I believe in D2 you could only find each unique once per game (as in you'd have to leave and remake to find that unique again), unless I'm misunderstanding your question.

That's correct, you can only find that one unique once a game. To the OP's question, no I don't believe it is the same. They renamed them legendaries and changed their color, so it makes sense you can find it more than once in a game.
I'm pretty sure it was stated you could only find them once per difficulty not per game. (I could be wrong)
Basically my question is if I find a legendary deckards slicer (hypothetical item) in normal would I be able to find deckards slicer in normal ever again or would I only find it again once I hit nightmare?
In D2 they could definitely spawn more than once per difficulty. Unless that was something from single player. I didn't play much single player. Anyhow, relevant quote from the wiki:
"Unique: These items are the most rare that can be dropped from monsters. Like the name suggests, they are unique, meaning they can only spawn once each game, and they have fixed properties that stay the same regardless of when they spawn, but the same properties can go a few points up or down. A player can have more than one however"

Edit: Forgot to mention that I doubt they're going to restrict them to once per difficulty in D3, dunno about the once per game restriction though.
I would probably say once per game is far more likely, but once per difficulty is kind of pushing it to be honest. Considering that Blizzard wants people re-playing through their game, it wouldn't make sense if a character can only find an item once per difficulty, and then never again. It would basically be forcing people to remake characters just to try and farm items that might be valuable.

Once per difficulty non-inclusive of Inferno might be ok, but still completely unneeded. Drop rate will be so low how do you expect to be in Normal difficulty long enough to get more than one of the same legendary, or for that rate, how will it matter?
@Kaiser It wouldn't matter in normal but if it had of been that way in normal it would be that way in all the difficulties. It was my misunderstanding of how I thought it worked in d2 that prompted the question. I never really got into the trading or Baal runs and I alway wondered how people had enough soj's to trade for all that stuff. I got my lvl99 and Botd the hard way...come to think of it I never saw but two soj's and one Zod rune in that decade. Of course I might not have played as much as other people but that took FOREVER.
But in any case thanks everyone for clearing this up for me.
Just going on experience, I know for fact it was more than once per difficulty. How many times as NM Andy dropped an SoJ for me? Too many to count.
As to the original question, I don't really know. I thought the name change may have been made so it was possible that more than one of the same legendary could drop from the same monster/boss kill for mulitple players at the same time. If you think about it, with each of us getting our own loot, if you were targeting a certain item, group play would be optimal for getting that loot if it only spawned once per game.
As some others have sort of said, D2 was once per GAME. Meaning, if you're doing Mephisto runs then you can only have 1x SoJ drop per run. If his drop roll ends up landing on a second SoJ, it is then rerolled and a new item is generated. Of course, this situation would be stupidly ridiculously rare regardless.
In D3, the point of items being called Legendaries rather than Uniques is that there are no longer any "unique" aspects to them. You can wield 2 Legendary weapons at once, you can have 15 of the same Legendary drop per game, etc. I'd imagine they will be rare enough that seeing two of the same item in a single game (unless it was an extremely long game) will be the thing of legends (ho, ho). At least you would hope it'll be that way.

Hope this is a little clearer.

The odds of multiple of the same unique dropping in the same game is pretty damn astronomical, even if it was allowed.
