Two separate issues. First if you have not been informed you can now go to amazon and change your shipping option to release date shipping. Just go to my account>open orders>shipping options and select release day shipping. If you don't have the option to select it then it may be because you ordered it with other items. You will need to cancel and re-order or call up amazon and do it over the phone.
The second issue goes with the first topic. Has anyone ordered a game with such a big release like this from amazon before and had release date shipping? If so does it usually arrive on the release date or the day before so you can install and have everything ready for when the servers go live at midnight? Just curious if I should try to go to a walmart and get the CE so I can have those twelve precious hours of no sleep and pissing off the wife.
pre-download, and get from walmart, amazon will always get it to you ON the day (no problem there), but not the day before (some people do report getting games the day before, but not everyone (in fact most dont)) you just hear about the stories of people getting it before its out, because well. thats more interesting to hear.

I have used release day shipping before. Most recently it was for Mass Effect 3. My copy didn't show up until around 5pm on release day. Rarely do you ever receive the game the day before, but it is not unheard of. I just know that in my own personal experience my games usually come late afternoon on the actual release day. I hope this helps.

"No one gets to heaven 'til they've lived awhile in hell and even then it's rare that you'll be going there."
I just pre-ordered a new copy and cancelled the one I had pre-ordered along side The Book of Cain(which shipped months ago) that was listed as arriving on the 17th.
I posted a thread about this exact topic a bit earlier requesting if anyone had used this "Release Day Delivery" shipping before and didn't get a whole lot of feedback but I spoke to some friends and have been assured it works as intended.
For anyone using Amazone to get the CE version of the game (like myself) you can always pre-order a digital copy also (if you intended on having 2 accounts anyways, like myself) and then just override your previous account with the CE version. There's already a blue post on how this would be addressed - you can then get an additional key from blizzard to "give to a friend" as I believe it was put.
If I can find the post I'll quote it in a few minutes.
This let's you start RIGHT AWAY with the digital download version of the game but also lets you get that CE you want with all those nifty doo-dads.
The Collector's Edition is only available from retail, and that means to play as soon as possible you'll want to hit a midnight release to pick it up (or hope FedEx drops off your package super fast). We don't have any plans to release a digital CE, it's a retail-only kind of thing. But! you may have a few options.
If you have the WoW Annual Pass (or go sign up for it now) you get a free digital copy of Diablo III. This will give you the game right at midnight, you can go download right now, all that stuff. Then, when you pick up your CE, you can overwrite the standard edition license with the CE license and you'll be granted 4 months of game time (more or less equivalent to the cost of the standard edition). So that's a good option. More info also available in the Annual Pass FAQ.
Alternatively, you can get the digital version now, play right at midnight, overwrite your license with your CE when you pick it up, and then contact our support department. In most situations they'll be able to grant you a new standard key, which you can then give to a friend, or whatever.

I'm sitting in Korea, and was bummed about not making the cut for GameStop, that's fine actually. My friend was gonna pick it up for me.
I JUST ordered the CE from Amazon. I was stoked to see the release day delivery, for $1!? Hell yeah!
Now, my friend in the states will get the package while I'm sleeping, and I'll see it in the morning. I won't have a chance to play, cause I'll be at work all day. Oh man, longest 9 -5 in my life!

Guess I'll have to use my annual pass copy before I upgrade the account and then cancel WoW for good.
